The relationship that we have with our hair stylist is one of the most important ones we have. The good hair they help us achieve gives us confidence, it picks us up and makes us feel good. Does it not? Good hair is a powerful thing! I’ve been without my trusted stylist for a little while now and my hair has had some ups and downs. Since I moved closer to the heart of Seattle, I’ve been looking for a new salon to call home and I finally think I found it. I was recently invited to visit the Robert Leonard Salon & Day Spa in downtown Seattle to see what they are all about. Since my hair was still in recovery from the damage done by another well known local chain, it was definitely an invitation my hair was ready to accept.

For those of you in Seattle, the Robert Leonard Salon is located on 6th Avenue between Lenora and Virginia. If you’re familiar with the Westin Hotel, it is right around the corner from the hotel. Founded over 30 years ago by Robert Salmons and his partner,  the salon is home to over 20 stylists and colorists that offer a complete range of haircare services, including extensions. From what I gathered from my stylist during my visit, the salon also offers stylists the opportunity to continue to learn with education offered along the way, most recently from Oribe.

Keep reading for a look inside the salon, more about my experience at the salon and a giveaway!

The salon itself is gorgeous with the street facing side featuring floor to ceiling windows that let in plenty of natural light. One thing I did not expect was how large the salon really is, it is sprawling! There are three separate, distinct areas with plenty of stylist stations then a few areas where individual stylists work. There’s also a large area for for nails as well as treatment rooms for facials and massages.

It also has quite a bit of Asian influenced art work that  is scattered all over the salon as well as art by quite a few local artists. My favorite thing about the salon is the wood-worked partitions you see all over the salon. Some of it hangs on the wall in hallways and some of it was converted into stylist stations.

Speaking of Oribe, they carry Oribe’s full line of products as well as Rene Furterer, Moroccanoil and Bumble and Bumble. The salon is also day spa featuring  that offers a full range of nail services, massage, waxing, skincare treatments and makeup application. They also carry and use Dermalogica and Pevonia products during treatments. You have to love a salon that uses good product lines… and one that gives free baby bottles of Moroccanoil as a parting gift. 🙂

Robert Leonard Salon was gracious enough to let me pick 2 products to take home with me. After much deliberation, I settled on Oribe’s Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil and Dry Texturizing Spray. The oil is fantastic, it seems like summer in a bottle. I add it to my ends while my hair is still damp to detangle and it leaves my hair super soft and with shine to spare. The spray is my go to when I want to add some texture to my hair, make use of those layers the stylist put in place. It’s a great dry shampoo substitute as well, also with the signature Oribe summer-in-a-bottle scent. I think my next acquisition will have to be the Supershine Moisturizing Cream, loved the small sample I tried.. more on those soon.

I came in on a Wednesday evening for appointment was with Chelsea. All I knew is that I wanted some layers added in for some movement and my roots touched up, anything else was a bonus. After a quick consultation, we settled on a plan; matching my roots for a graceful grow out and lightening my tips for an ombré effect. I was delighted, I’ve always wanted to try the look but never thought I could pull it off…Chelsea had faith that I could.

After mixing color and applying it to my roots, Chelsea went on to lighten my ends using a technique I had never seen before, one she called “tipping”. She took the ends, backcombed them back a bit then applied the color lifting mixture and wrapped it in foil. This would give my ends a more blended effect. I’ve never seen a colorist do this before and now I think I’ll ask for this from here on out.

Pardon the odd, squinting look in my before picture. I was trying to take an artsy picture out in the sunshine for you and it just didn’t work out. 🙂 I was really unhappy with my hair before my visit to Robert Leonard. I tried a different salon and their work required a follow up visit to fix my hot roots, it was just a mess. I asked for a vibrant red toned brown and that faded super fast, which was surprising to me. What I had in that picture was dull and lifeless, my hair had zero movement. For the most part, I’ve been a “wash and go” for a long time and that style just wasn’t working for me.

What you see now as my “after” shot is about a month after my visit. I wanted to show you what my hair looks like, both before and after, by my own hand. Sure enough, my roots are growing out gracefully as Chelsea wanted them to. It is tough for me to spot my root color growing in. The layers she gave me has given my hair life, there’s tons of movement in my hair now. My hair is currently the longest it has ever been in my entire life. I don’t have to do much to make my hair look great now. I can blow dry my hair in 10 minutes, take a curling iron and curl my ends out real quick and I’m good to go. Wash and go is back.

My favorite thing about this look is how subtle the blonde is on my ends and throughout. This wasn’t exactly intentional, due to some things I did at home, the color did not lift as much as we wanted it to but it still looks great. We can always go back and try again during my next visit.

  1. I am a redhead although many call me strawberry blonde, but that is because I have it highlighted about twice a year. I wear it on the medium length side. I am always wanting to grow it out longer but then I get impatient with the “awkward” grow out faze.

    1. Hi Tracey! Are you in the Seattle area? Contact me and I’ll send you the gift card to the salon. 🙂
