Product Girl Favorites of 2012

It’s time for a beauty year in review.  Trust us, picking just 10 favorites for an entire year was no easy feat. We discovered a plethora of new brands and fell in love with so much. These 10 favorites are the products we use constantly. The ones that really stand out and we would buy over and over again!

BECCA Bolero Mineral Blush is a flattering terracotta shade that doubles as a bronzer. It’s my perfect cheek.

This bright cobalt Essie Butler Please nail polish is stunning and a newer discovery!  I’m confident I will wear this constantly in 2013.

Every morning starts with a cup of coffee and One Love Organics Morning Glory serum. It contains a ton of antioxidant power and perk-up ingredients like peppermint oil.

Highlighters are a Product Girl’s best friend and we are partial to the pale bronzy gold Benefit Sun Beam.

Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pad for Body just make everything look and feel tighter and naturally tanned. Like an Rx for the Vitamin D deficient.

Hands down, my favorite shadow of 2012: NARS Vent Glace Duo Eyeshadow

Still mystified by the brightening powers of Bare Escentuals Well Rested Face & Eye Brightener.

Melvita Orange Blossom Extraordinary Water brings me to a happy place and is always step one in my skin care routine, day and night.

The perfect top knot achieved with Sarah Potempa The Wrap-Up. And low bun, messy undone bun, etc. It does it all and perfectly.

NARS Mexican Rose Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil is the longest wearing lip product I’ve ever worn (and it’s not technically a stain!) I always have a good day when wearing this gorgeous bright pink.

Tis the season for Friends & Family sales. If you’re a planner like we fancy ourselves to be, you’ll take advantage of these opportunities to snag some amazing holiday gifts. And maybe a little treat for yourself, too. has its 20% F&F sale going on through Friday, November 9, and it’s definitely worth checking out. They’ve added a ton of new brands to the site, many that don’t normally go on sale. We were excited to see the luxe Sunday Riley, organic powerhouse Vapour and hair genius Sarah Potempa (Beachwaver, anyone?)!

Here’s our top F&F picks!

bareMinerals Light Up The Room Collection ($39), a.k.a. Do it for the Well-Rested Face & Eye Brightener (raves seen here previously). We also love the Renew & Hydrate Eye Cream, Illuminating Mineral Veil and Prime Time Brightening Eyelid Prime with its pretty gold sheen action.

Rahua Shampoo ($32, 9.3 oz) has been on my radar forever. It has a cult following of sorts (especially in the natrual and I’ve only heard amazing things. Time to try, right? It’s 100% natural with coconut and shea butters and even some quinoa to help with moisture retention.

Sarah Potempa Mini “Touch Up” Iron ($35), Discovering Sarah Potempa, celeb hair guru and creator of the most user-friendly tools for us gals at home, was a highlight of 2012 for me. I’m sure her mini flat iron, coated with ceramic and tourmaline, obviously, will be a travel and gym bag staple for me. Totally loving the case, too!

Mally High Shine Liquid Lipstick Trio ($30) is so very gorgois , as Ms. Mally would say. Breaks down to $10 per tube pre-discount, so it’s a no-brainer must. Mally’s liquid lipstick is one of the best and these colors are so wearable. A great gift for any woman in your life.

Sunday Riley Effortless Breathable Tinted Primer ($48), is a product I’ve been very curious about. It’s a multi-purpose primer/skin plumper with peptides and Rejuvenox that basically keeps skin breathing and drenched in oxygen. The presence of a tint gives me hope that this could work in place of foundation on some days!

Back to BE with bareMinerals Well Rested Face and Eye Brightener

I’ve long loved bareMinerals, but haven’t regularly used any of their face products for years. I got burnt out after an intense mineral makeup phase in 2007. But I’m back, baby! In fact, I’ve been on a little bit of bareMinerals binge. It started first with the intro of the READY Foundation (pressed bareMinerals!) and then quickly progressed to the Well Rested Face & Eye Brightener. I spotted this click-style pen at Ulta and was intrigued because it’s one shade for all and essentially clear. Slightly creamy, but mainly clear.

Here’s what you need to know: it totally works! I don’t struggle with dark circles, so on most days, this acts as my concealer. It gives me that awake look and has absolutely no shimmer, which I love. I pat it in and it goes from creamy clear-ish to just dewy and bright. I use this all over my face as I would a highlighter and it’s all “I’m wearing highlighter but you can’t see it because it’s magic.” Or something. No-makeup makeup mavens will go nuts for this pen, because it gives everything a lift without doing anything obvious. I’m 100% satisfied with this purchase and getting excited about what Leslie Blodgett and her crew of BE babes will do next.

Buxom Stay There Eye Shadow, For Dog Lovers Everywhere

There’s a new breed of cream shadow on the block, Buxom Stay There Eye Shadow, and I’m all in a tizzy over these! They’re named after puppy dogs. How cool is that? These are tugging at my crazy dog lady heart strings in a big way. The formula sounds appealing – it’s a “bounc-i-licous” eye color with an unexpectedly plush, lightweight texture. It’s paraben-free, infused with minerals and contains Aloe extract and Vitamin E. Sounds promising, right? I love the color selection — I’m eyeing up Pug and Schnauzer. I do have a thing for those wrinkly, smushy puppy faces.

My only disappoint with the selection is, of course, no Boston Terrier!  If I may offer some inspiration for a new Buxom shade…here’s my girl, Betty.

You can find these exclusively at Sephora for $17. We’ll report back when we give these a try!

New! Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries Santa Barbara

There’s a new addition to the Bare Escentuals Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries line, say hello to Santa Barbara. This new Perfume Diaries perfume is a floral and like its predecessor, can only be found at Sephora. I wasn’t a fan of the first scent but am interested in seeing what this one is like. Going by its notes, seems interesting. As for the notes, they are:

Top: Pepper, Lemon, Cassis, Peach
Iris, Jasmine, Lily of the Valley (Muguet)
Bottom: Moss, Musk, Cedarwood, Patchouli, Benzoin

So what do you think? Are you interested in sniffing this new perfume? With a middle note of iris, I’m definitely intrigued.

New! Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries

By now, we’re all familiar with Leslie Blodgett, the woman behind Bare Escentuals. Now she’s bringing us a perfume and I for one, cannot wait to smell Bare Escentuals first foray into perfume. Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries is the name of the perfume and I’m really wondering what’s up Bare Escentuals sleeves with a name like this. Here’s how the smell is described:

Imagine you’re on a tropical beach. The warm rays are beating down on you. There is nothing on the agenda for days, save for sunbathing, sipping umbrella drinks and sleeping in. Leslie Blodgett has captured the ultimate vacation through fragrance with this intoxicating blend of creamy sensuality, dreamy florals and sexy musks. Glowing, gorgeous sun-kissed skin that just begs to be touched is at the heart of this limited-edition scent.

The notes in this perfume are:

  • Top: Black Pepper, Freesia, Anise
  • Middle: Iris, Vanilla Orchid, Plumeria, Patchouli
  • Bottom: Sandalwood, Labdanum, Musk

Right now Sephora lists this as a Beauty Insider exclusive (are you a Beauty Insider? You really should be) and there’s also a solid perfume and a body cream available in this scent.

So what do you think? Are you in? I think I might be… I have an iris based perfume that I’m totally in love with and the mention of iris in this as a note has me very curious. I can only hope it has some silage to it because building layers of scent is not really my thing.

Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals Crash Course Collection

I’m a sucker for sets (I’m sure I’m not alone here :)) and this Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals Crash Course Collection caught my eye right away the last time I was browsing the counters at Nordstrom, my unofficial home away from home.

At $22, I couldn’t pass it up. Bare Escentuals recently launched a new mascara called Flawless Definition Mascara and I was curious about it. When I saw this set included a deluxe sample version of said mascara in Black, a mini version of their 100% Natural Lipgloss in Wild Honey (a golden pearl pink shade that smells delicious!) and Gossip eyeshadow (a very now and pretty shimmering grey) all in a cute little metallic pouch, I thought it was a great way to try that mascara and finally give in to my inner shopaholic and try that lip gloss I’ve been wondering about for months.

Bare Escentuals Hydrating Mineral Veil

Have you seen Bare Escentuals Hydrating Mineral Veil in stores yet? When it came out, I had a really hard time finding it. Apparently it was selling out like crazy because I had to go to a few stores in my area to find this.

bare-escentuals-hydrating-mineral-veil This mineral veil is a little different than the ones we’ve seen in the past. This mineral veil features a water-based formula that cools skin as it’s applied. Ever try Prescriptive’s Liquid Powder? That’s exactly what it feels like and it will definitely feel good on a hot summer day. It also comes with a new antibacterial brush that is so soft you won’t want to put it down.

As for actual usage, I expected a hydrating product to clash with my oily skin but it didn’t at all. It left me wondering what actual hydration this product provides, it just seemed like regular old mineral veil to me. The only thing that wasn’t like regular mineral veil was that the Bare Escentuals Hydrating Mineral Veil left a very soft shimmer on my skin. So much that I’ve started use it instead of the other one.

Have you tried this product? What did you think? How did it react with your skin?

Put on a Heavenly Face

I’ve been obsessed with brushes lately and the one I’m all about right now is the Bare Escentuals Heavenly Face Brush. When I walked up to the Bare Escentuals counter and asked for their recommendation on the best brush to use to give me full coverage, this is the one that they suggested.

Bare Escentuals Heavenly Face Brush What’s nice about this brush is that it can deliver the fuller, buildable coverage I’m looking for without irritating my skin. You can’t see it in the picture I posted recently but I’m hiding some major issues and irritating that area is something I’m trying very carefully to avoid. The brush is super soft so it’s perfect for my application. It doesn’t not scratch my skin as I swirl, tap and buff away. This was a problem I had with their brushes in the past and they left me with a rather bad impression. I also really like that it’s got a flat top and a longer handle. This way it’s easier for me to pick up an even amount of product and work it in evenly as well.

The SA also said they all use the Heavenly Face brush at their counter and that it’s their best selling brush. The people have spoken. 🙂
