Late last month I told you about the QVC Customer’s Choice Beauty Awards and how we would be test driving products from one of the categories nominated in the awards. We chose to go with Best Hair Tools and we have had a blast trying out all of these tools. Some were a complete revelation to us and others made us think how we survived this long without them.
Speaking for myself, I’ve become a “hair gal” over the course of the last year, I am now the girl who gets up earlier to do her hair instead of relying on the haircut to do all the work. Voting for the QVC Customer’s Choice Beauty Awards ends tonight so we’ll be spending the day featuring the products in the Best Hair Tools category.
Right now we’re taking a look at the Calista Tools products nominated, their Ion Hot Rollers and Perfecter Heated Round Brush.

Remember the challange I told you about for National Sleep Naked Night? Dani Jonas is the Face-Off winner and has won $7,500 for her favorite charity, Change for the Children Foundation. Don't you love it when people use their clout for good? Well done, Dani!
Also, as part of National Sleep Naked Night, I'll be hosting a Twitter party tonight from 8:30pm to 10:30pm EST. Follow me (@productgirl) and @SwisspersCotton and join in on the fun using the #SleepNaked hash tag. We'll be talking about removing our makeup, braving our bare, sans makeup faces and having a good time. I hope you'll join me.

Removing your makeup at night is one of the most important things you can do for your skin. The folks at Swisspers are all about taking care of your skin and started the Sleep Naked campaign to urge women achieve healthier skin by “sleeping naked”, which means ending their day makeup-free. You would think that removing your makeup each night would be a no brainer but 50% of women do not take off their makeup each night and of those that do, 80% of them do not do it correctly and that leads to skin and eye issues. Swisspers has some tips on how to remove face and lip makeup as well as how to remove eye makeup.
Swisspers has challenged reality stars, Emily Maynard (The Bachelorette) and Danielle Jonas (Married to Jonas), to not only remove their makeup each night, but to remove it properly. Each one of these ladies have revealed a makeup-free photo of themselves and are rallying their fans to take the Sleep Naked pledge with them. The person with the most pledges will host a virtual party on National Sleep Naked Night this Thursday, September 19th. She will answer questions in a live video chat and will have a $5,000 donation made in her name to a charity empowering young women.
I’m taking the challenge, how about you? The benefits are just piling up! Removing your makeup each night allows your skin to breathe, the makeup you might otherwise leave on can dry out your skin. Makeup in your pores can lead to bacteria build-up and irritate your skin, so why not take the makeup off and help your pores appear smaller? It promotes natural exfoliation and in the end, your pillow case will thank you!
If there is one thing I am constantly in need of, it is hair elastics. It is one of those things that you have in every handbag and in every drawer yet you always need more. Am I right? Right now you can get some free Goody hair elastics when you’re shopping for some other girl essentials. Text “KOTEX” to “TARGET” (827438) and get your coupon. Then you can keep both of your essentials on hand at all times!
We were tasked with creating a hair tutorial that uses hair elastics from one of our favorite brands; Goody. Being the hair novice that I am, I had to rope in Product Girl Jr. for a little assistance. Kayla and I broke out some hair chalk, starting braiding and we came up with a look that I think is fun for the end of summer or even the first few days of school.
Here’s how we created this look:
- Start by parting your hair to the side then section your hair into three even pieces.
For a little something extra, we added a little of hair chalk into each section. To make the color pop, use a pomade before you add the color to your hair.
- Braid each section so that you have three separate braids. We used two different types of elastics, some smaller Goody hair elastics for each section, then a larger, stronger Goody hair elastic for the end braid.
- Finally, take each section’s braid and braid that into one larger braid securing it with a Goody hair elastic. We went with pink since we use some pink hair chalk.
And there you have it! We’ve been rocking braids non-stop this summer and this look is perfect for those hot summer days. To transition from day to evening, just undo your braids and you’re left with gorgeous, beachy waves.

Butter London’s fall collection is a total color clash and I love it. It pushes away those dark, muted shades we normally see in the fall and gives us eye-popping brightness that includes a few shades you just have to get your hands on.
In my book, Giddy Kipper is the one shade I just couldn’t live without. It is a little deceptive, depending on the light you’re in it will lean into a gorgeous indigo blue (as Butter London describes it) and in others it is a rich violet with a gorgeous micro shimmer. While I was at dinner last night, we couldn’t quite agree what shade it really was, I was in the violet camp while everyone else was in the indigo camp. Either way, it is just a gorgeous shade… one that’s graced my nails several times since I’ve picked up this bottle.
Doesn’t Giddy Kipper just look stunning in the sun? It’s quite clearly violet, is it not? 🙂
So what’s on your nails this week? What fall shades are on your radar this fall? Lets hash this out in the comments.
My friend and personal authority on everything nails, Michelle Mismas from All Lacquered Up, just launched her A Pair Affair by All Lacquered Up Finger Paints collection with Sally Beauty and I just had to run out and get it. Michelle has taken us behind the scenes of this collection and showed swatches of each of the six shades. The collection just launched yesterday in stores and online, each bottle retails for $5.29.
Normally, I’m not one for attempting my own nail art. I prefer to admire from afar and wish I could make my nails look that good…I’m still working on perfecting my at-home mani! After reading about these two shades; You Yacht to Know Better and Sarong So Right, I decided to give it a try. I got serious! I bought all kinds of scissors to cut tape into patterns, hole punchers, brushes and dotting tools. I haven’t used them yet but I am inspired. 🙂
QVC is my go-to for beauty on TV… My skincare hero Kate Somerville is a regular, Maureen Kelly from Tarte (ever catch her saying the word “kryptonite” when she has been on? She got that from me! :)) is too along with countless other beauty brands we know and love. Now the voting for their 5th Annual Customer Choice Beauty Awards are upon us and you can begin voting on your favorite products across 36 categories, from Best Mascara to Best Conditioner.
The beauty polls open to the public during Beauty’s Best, a 25-hour event kicking off Friday, August 23 at 11pm ET and continuing all day August 24. However, we have special, early access to the polls beginning tomorrow at midnight ET. You can begin voting here. The winners will be announced on October 17th.
We will be test driving the products in the Best Hair Tools category so stay tuned!
I’m still enjoying what is left of summer; colorful nails, bronzed skin and easy braided hair, but I can’t help but want dive head first into fall’s new beauty. This week my nails are an example of that, I’m rocking Essie’s Cashmere Bathrobe from the Fall 2013 collection.
Most of the collection is a pass for me but Cashmere Bathrobe caught my eye simply because I didn’t already have a shade like this in my nail vault. I have plenty of greys but I don’t have one light this. This is a dark grey creme with a light shimmer that doesn’t immediately detract away from the dark richness of the grey. The formula is good, a nice consistency that levels out and plenty of coverage in just one coat…even though I have two on.
So what’s on your nails this week? Still loving those summer shades or are you transitioning into fall?
High up on my list of beauty lemmings is the new NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation. For years now I’ve been all about powder foundations but as I get older and my skin needs a little more camouflage before I leave the house, I’ve started to admit that cream (or liquid) foundations are where it’s at for me right now. This new foundation is tempting because it claims to have the feel of a cream but with the buildable, lightweight coverage of a liquid.
Here’s what NARS has to say about Radiant Cream Compact Foundation:
Available in an extremely extensive collection of 20 shades, this lightweight formula combines the supple feel of a cream compact with the weightless coverage of a liquid foundation. It is portable, buildable, and sets in seconds; the formula also features our Advanced Emulsion Technology, allowing for a wet or dry application. Expanding its foundation lineup, NARS introduces Radiant Cream Compact Foundation. This lightweight formula combines the supple feel of a cream foundation with the weightless coverage of liquid makeup for a truly glowing complexion.
Enriched with the NARS exclusive Advanced Emulsion Technology, the velvety cream formula blends seamlessly and uniquely allows for the modern artistic versatility of a wet or dry application. The buildable formula delivers medium to full coverage and sets in seconds, leaving skin soft, smooth, and glowing — all with the ease of a portable compact.
With so much newness, you would think NARS would be done surprising us for the season but low and behold, next month NARS is introducing their new Eye Paint.
Housed in a brilliant pot of high-impact pigment, this versatile product can be used as both an eyeshadow and eyeliner. The innovative weightless gel formula delivers long-lasting color that glides on smooth and dries down quickly. When used as eyeliner, pair with the new Angled Eyeliner Brush #38 for a perfectly defined eye.
Comes in 10 shades for a full range of artistry. Ophthalmologist Tested.
