We haven’t had the pleasure of meeting cool Canadian chick and Stark Skincare Founder Jessica Lafleur in person, but we already know we want to be besties with her. We love her line of natural, organic skincare and the message it conveys: simplicity and purity. We also love her Pinterest boards, especially “My Man is Also My Living Doll, So?” Speaking of her man, she sent me her photo for this very post right here and the file name was called “MyLove.” It was from her husband’s computer. ADORABLE, right? We don’t know much about Mr. Stark Skincare, but we like him, too.
Jessica graciously let us peek into her makeup bag. She’s the ultimate expert in organic ingredients and natural skincare, so we were thrilled to see what products she uses on a daily basis. Read on to the end, because Jessica also is asking everyone reading for some very important makeup advice!
Over the years, I’ve become really picky about what I put on my skin. I’ve always used natural skincare products, basically since I was a kid, but natural makeup wasn’t really available to me (if you don’t count the kohl I found when I was about 14). Since conventional stuff irritates my skin, I never really got into makeup. Despite all the amazing natural brands out there now, I still hardly wear makeup (as you can probably tell by my picture!) But like any woman I like to have a few things in my arsenal, especially when on the go.
My home-made deodorant. Simple and effective, and something I have been making for a while since I can’t wear conventional deodorant (it gives me rashes). I experiment with the blends, but I like coconut oil, baking soda, arrow root powder or cornstarch, a pinch of zinc, some cocoa butter and essential oils of lavender, tea tree and lemon.
Physician’s Formula Tinted Moisturizer in Medium. It’s easy to find, inexpensive and I love the scent…clean lavender. Can’t remember exactly how clean/pure the ingredients are, but I think they are very decent.
Perfume. This small gold and glass bottle contains some oudh oil in a scent called “Misk” (nope, not musk…this is a light, fresh and “green” scent, perfect for spring and summer.) I picked this up visiting my man’s parents in Kuwait, at my favorite Souq from this guy with walls of tiny vials and jars all around him…it’s my idea of heaven. I love collecting all these different exotic perfume oils, and the crazier the bottles, the better! I dab one drop on the back of my neck, and my hair swishes the scent around.
A hair elastic. This fabric-y kind (from the dollar store! Score!) is great because there are no metal parts. My hair is delicate!
MAC concealer: Actually crazy old — I need to throw this out!
Vapour Organics Aura Blush in Torch. I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! Vapour makes organic, natural makeup. This blush is a multi-purpose stick that blends easily, and the colour is sheer but effective, and is a nice pink with just a touch of peachy-gold to it which is perfect for making my olive skin, which can get a little sallow in the winter months, look alive and fresh! It’s full of amazing organic oils, which I love, and it smells delicate and fresh. Oh, and it’s really easy to blend. To me, this is what makeup should be like.
My trusty Tweezerman. I don’t have a lot of eyebrow, but I do need to keep what’s there well organized.
Stark Skincare’s Cypress Purity + Defense Oil. I formulated this oil for my skin type, which is very combination and a little congested at times (but with pesky dry patches!) Since I’m just over 30, I need an extra boost of antioxidants and phytonutrients to stave off the effects of pollution, working late nights, time and other stressy things. I feel is my fountain of youth and calm (due to the essential oils used). The scent is really delicious in my hair as well. Plus, my man uses this oil as much as I do, so it’s a product for both of us when we travel.
Stark Skincare’s Grapefruit Cleanse + Hydrate Balm. This kind of does it all and smells good. Takes my makeup off, conditions my lips and hands, and when combined with my Stark Cypress Oil, makes a crazy-rich and indulgent night-time treatment. Done. Like the Vapour blush, this multi-tasks, which I think is a great quality in any product.
Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer in Fig. This is as bold as I go when it comes to a lip color! Even with this, I somehow feel it’s too much most of the time but I like that it’s a sheer berry-esque stain. I always intend to start wearing some beautiful, sophisticated lipstick, but it hasn’t happened yet and this is my attempt to ease into it slowly.
Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Mascara. I love this mascara… even the insane packaging. Mascara is one makeup item that I really love and always wear when I go out. This one is great for a natural, but doesn’t last a full day. Still, for my purposes, it’s perfect. Also, the first ingredient is orange water!
Cargo Bronzer (or highlighter?) in…I can’t read the label! I use a pinch of this bronzer/highlighting stuff in the evening when I have a new tan I need to show off. I can’t use much of it as I find it dries my cheeks a bit, and I hate the feeling of dry skin. I actually prefer creamier makeup over powder, no matter what it is. Next bronzer I buy will be something like the Vapour blush, with organic oils to feed my skin while I get my glam on.
Benefit Kabuki brush. It’s soft and does its job well without leaving behind little hairs.
The makeup bag. I’ve had this since I was a teenager, and it’s very near and dear to my heart. It’s from a block-printing and textiles house in Jaipur, India, called Soma House, and was given to me by a dear friend.
What’s missing? Eyeliner! I profess that when I do want to get a little dramatic, I bust out the black eyeliner. I’m currently searching for a long-wearing natural one! Any suggestions?
