Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Illuminating Serum

You may recall Tarte’s Radiant & Rested kit that launched last summer at Sephora. It contained two yet-to-be released products, one being Tarte’s Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Illuminating Serum which is now available on its own as part of Tarte’s Spring launch. My feelings towards this product are quite straightforward: I love it.

I would pit this product in a new category that seems to be all the rage: skincare makeup. Here’s the ingredient rundown: Amazonian clay (ya know, I’m really growing fond of this stuff!) helps improve skin texture and remove surface oil on the skin; Chamomile extract acts as an anti-inflammatory agent that treats and heals dry or damaged skin; Vitamin C brightens skin and helps prevent premature signs of aging; Vitamins A and E act as anti-inflammatory emollients and protect against free radical damage; and Sodium Hyaluronate retains moisture to plump fine lines and wrinkles.

It doesn’t lend coverage, but it is a great base and would suffice well for no-makeup days assuming you don’t need or want heavy coverage. Usually, I mix it with face primer and use a foundation brush to spread over my skin and then follow up with a light application of foundation or powder. I love that it has good-for-you ingredients and it genuinely looks great on. I blended some out in the photo above to show you what it looks like. While it looks like a beige color, it doesn’t have color on. May pose some difficulty for dark skin tones, but I’d say it’s pretty universal.

This is available at Sephora for $32, but the Radiant & Rested Kit is still available as well for just $10 more. I’d recommend picking the set up — I’ve loved every piece!

  1. Hi. How does this compare to Josie Maran’s Argon illuminizer? I’m debating between the two. Thank you!

  2. Hi Kelly! I’d say this is completely different — this can be used all over the face by itself and is much more subtle. Josie Maran’s illuminizer is more of a traditional highlighter that wouldn’t work all over the face. The caveat being that you can mix Josie’s with foundation for an all-over glow. Am I any help?!

  3. Hi! Yes, that is helpful. I think I want to try the Josie Maran one that is in her new set at Sephora if it ever goes on sale … I missed the love nest one. However, the Tarte one has me intrigued. I like both brands! Thank you, I really enjoy your blog! =)

  4. I’m just like you! I like using something like this to even out my skin and then putting a powder like MAC Natural SkinFinish on the weekends or when I wake up late. I have Origins VitaZing, but find it a bit too dark for me right now. I will look for this for sure!
