We teamed up this month with our friends at Revlon to showcase a hair and nail trend this month. We present you our take on braids and nail art. I think I missed a very important life lesson as a child: properly braiding my hair. In the past year, I’ve conquered the fishtail and am trying very hard to do a French braid on myself. It’s a work in progress. But the one braid I can do practically sleeping is a traditional one. Especially when they are tiny, peek-a-boo style braids like I show you in the video above. I like to call this style something I do on day two/three hair to make the texture seem more styled.
For the nail art, this one is pretty simple thanks to Revlon Top Speed™ Nail Enamel and Revlon Nail Art Stencil. I applied two coats of the Top Speed in Sterling, a shiny silver then placed the Nail Art Stencil sticker on my dry nail. From there, it just took one coat of Orient (a classic red) on the top. I love how easy it was, and would be interested in seeing more Revlon Nail Art Stencils in other varieties in the future. Perhaps chevron stripes?
Our friends at Revlon are once again gifting 10 Product Girl readers with a product featured in this video. This month, we’ve got a Revlon Top Speed Nail Enamel up for grabs! Leave a comment on this post by Saturday, October 27, telling us your thought on braids (tips and how-to advice welcome, please!) and we’ll pick 10 winners.*

We’re use to seeing “naked” or “smokey” eyeshadow palettes but there’s a bit of a gaping void when it comes to eyeshadow palettes that can take your look from day to night in an instant. This BH Cosmetics 60 Color BH Day and Night palette fills that void with its newest palette and gives you 60 shadows to play with for only $21. Our bottom line really loves that price… that and we happen to think BH gives good palette.
We’ve recently come to the conclusion that you can never have too many eye shadows. We’ve also come to the conclusion that we have been buying way too much makeup lately. If you’re like us (chances are that this is true, you’re reading a beauty blog after all), consider making an exception for this palette. We were impressed with its stand out color selection, and amazing pigmentation for just $21 bucks, that’s $0.35 per eye shadow!
The new nude lip for fall is not pale and Kim K. circa 2009, but rather, a little earthy and autumnal. It mimics your natural lip color but pulls a little brown. You could say it’s got a touch of the 90s thrown in there. It could be matte, satin or as I prefer, Velvet Gloss-y. Oh, NARS. I’m so devoted to your Velvet Gloss Pencils. The newest addition for fall, More, is an auburn hue. It’s got more than just a touch of the 90s in there – it’s very reminiscent of that era for me. And, I love how it looks on me. I love it even more, though, blended with NARS Velvet Gloss Pencil in Buenos Aires. Together, these two create the perfect new nude lip. It’s fresh, healthy and perfect for the season.
I’ve been cursed with blemishes that will not disappear. There’s three in total. Two on my forehead and one to the left of my lips – same spots, always. No matter how much drying lotion or salicylic acid-based treatment I use, they always come back. And the timing is suspect. These blemishes have cropped up in a perma way these last few months, which have been some of my most busy and stressful. Enter Murad Acne Clarifying Wipes, an on-the-go version of the brand’s renowned acne line. I’ve been using these wipes for a few weeks and am finding these stubborn blemishes are going away faster.
These wipes aren’t a traditional cleansing wipe, and I like to use them on clean skin once a day. They have this phenomenal cooling sensation on the skin and make me feel like my skin is truly clean (not stripped, though). Look for witch hazel (a natural form of salicylic acid) to tighten pores, algae extract to regulate oil and grape seed extract and vitamin E.
I’m hoping with regular use and a trip to see a professional for extractions, I can finally get rid of these pests once and for all.
Murad Clarifying Wipes just launched last month, $18 for 30-count. Available here.

It is September 2012 and if you have yet to try Vapour Beauty, then you should change that situation a.s.a.p. Your year will take a turn for the plus. Everything I try from this organic beauty powerhouse is a win. No longer is it “for a natural product, it’s pretty good.” Vapour is superior to most non-natural brands. I love the way this industry is progressing. And my skin agrees. My most recent natural beauty find is Vapour Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation. No chemicals, no irritants. Rather, 70% certified organic ingredients, like pumpkin and camellia, and 30% natural mineral pigments and vitamins.
Vapour designed this to lend a soft finish to the skin. It blurs out blemishes and unevenness flawlessly. Just a pump is all you need (I’m a match to shade S115). Miraculously, I first started using this at the hottest point of the summer and my skin did not act out. There’s a satin feel (due to yummy ingredients, not silicones) and I was wondering if it would slide off my face. When the ingredients are there to balance and do some good, you’ll be amazed at how positively your skin responds.
If you have aging skin (sadly, we all do, that’s life), then this is your friend. It softens the appearance of pesky fine lines and wrinkles, so you’ll look like you’re aging in the opposite direction. $48 at VapourBeauty.com.
Still wrapping your head around BB Creams? Well, ready or not, CC Creams are coming. This “color control” cream is like a “beauty/blemish balm” in the sense it doubles as makeup and skincare, but the CC offers more in the way of coverage and skincare.
A way to get in on the CC trend? The new Birchbox exclusive WEI to Go Sleep Over Kit, featuring a travel-sized duo of WEI’s Real Clean Gelled Oil Cleanser and Ideal Skin Perfect Finish. This kit is a girl’s best friend, especially ones who find themselves traveling often. One of my biggest challenges traveling is cleanser. I live for my oils, but they are difficult to travel with and I loathe decanting full-size items. Minis are a must.
And, the Ideal Skin Perfect Finish is a correcting CC Cream (three shades in total – light, medium, tan) with healing botanicals, like mandarin peel and licorice root extract. The formula is super lightweight and lends pretty good coverage. Word is that some Birchbox subscribers will be receiving this in their September box, and for everyone else, it’s available for $19 exclusively on Birchbox.com.
My nails are badly in need of some professional attention right now but I’m trying to hide that with some color since I haven’t had a chance to get to the salon just yet. This week my helper is Zoya Paloma.
Paloma is part of the Zoya NYFW 2012 Gloss collection, it is one of three jelly finish shades in the collection. As a jelly lover, I was excited to see Zoya focus on jellies. Frida and Katherine, the other gals in the collection, are deep teal and plum jellies. As for Paloma, she is a deep berry in the bottle but on the nail is a beautiful raspberry. I loved that I only needed 2 coats to get the opacity that I wanted so it fairly well pigmented for a jelly. There is still a hint of my nail lines visible but the rich, syrup like finish is very much there.
What’s on your nails this week? Tell us all about it in the comments! And by the way, there’s still time for Zoya’s Back to School BOGO!
Oh, have we got something good in store for you. The scoop on BECCA Ultimate Colour Gloss, the brand spanking new launch of lip colors (or colours) making a move for your makeup bag this fall. How to appropriately summarize the Ultimate Colour Gloss? We think spectacular feels about right. They are smooth and shiny. Longwearing and weightless. And one coat gives you deep color. Yeah, it’s basically the perfect gloss. As a bunch, the seven available shades make one enviable lip wardrobe. Miami Vice is a peachy nude that is perfect for everyone, Malibu Punch a fresh and bright tangerine, Hotel California a raspberry red and – my personal favorite — the deep berry Hummingbird.
Summer time memories are some of the strongest. For me, the summer of 2012 will always be known as the summer I discovered TATCHA skincare. I’ve been in a pretty committed relationship with the Japanese skincare regimen inspired by ancient rituals passed down from one generation of geisha to the next. TATCHA launched the skincare line last year after rediscovering a 200 year-old manuscript filled with rituals and ingredients from traditional Eastern beauty regimes. In this modern version, TATCHA formulated the line with precious green teas, Okinawa red algae and rice bran. Living like a geisha feels and looks good on the skin, let me make that point very clear!
TATCHA’s regime, available in several varieties based on skin type, includes:
Step one: TATCHA PURE Camellia One Step Cleansing Oil ($48) is hands down the best cleansing oil I’ve ever used. It’s unique in the sense that you truly don’t need to “double cleanse.” Two pumps of the cleansing oil, which does its magic with rice brain oil, camellia japonica seed oil, algae extract and green tea leaf extract, removes everything and leaves no residue behind. The texture is perfection.
Step two: TATCHA POLISHED Classic Rice Enzyme Powder ($65) is a fabulous cleanser that doubles as a gentle exfoliator. It’s ideal for clean, makeup-less faces. You start with a wet face and wet hands and a few shakes of the powder and and it turns into this silky formulation. The active enzymes include rice bran and papaya and hydrolyzed pearl. Skin is immediately gleamy and baby-soft. I LOVE this stuff.
Step three:TATCHA RADIANT Deep Brightening Serum ($150) is a hydrating serum that brings geisha-like luminosity to skin. TATCHA formulated this with time-tested Asian botanicals, making this truly unique. It feels like liquid silk and skin drinks it up instantly.
Step four:TATCHA SUPPLE Moisture Rich Silk Cream ($150) pampered my skin on all of those hot summer nights. I’m convinced this moisturizer, which is as silky and creamy as the name would indicate, helped restore balance to my skin with its weightless power combo of liquid silk, squalane and royal jelly.
One thing is for sure: this is a summer romance that will continue into the next season.
