Good Makeup at a Good Price: Milani

Since I’m a bit of a makeup snob, I haven’t faithfully used drugstore brand cosmetics for a long time. My biggest issue with drugstore makeup is eyeshadow quality, it doesn’t seem to be pigmented enough for my taste. Since I like eyeshadow with a strong color payoff, this was a problem… until now. I’ve been experimenting with different lines and I’ve found some great stuff recently in drugstores.

Milani_looseeyeshadow_1 Milani Cosmetics has some really great stuff. Everything I’ve tried is super pigmented, from the eyeshadows to the lipsticks. Their eyeshadows are wonderful too. Fans of MAC’s Electric Eel eyeshadow can save their money, Milani’s Atlantis is exactly like this shade. As a bonus, you can depot them and they’ll fit in MAC and Stila pan palettes. They also have some great loose power eyeshadows exactly like Bourjois does… do they look familiar? Hmm… I’m starting to wonder if Milani and Bourjois has more in common that just this.

Next we’ll look at NYX Cosmetics…

  1. Hey Carla! Did you know that in France, its home country, Bourjois is sold in drugstores and is the equivalent of Maybelline or Revlon here? The connection with Milani might be worth looking into. I know that a few years ago, FACE Stockholm was using the same chemist and packaging company as some lower priced private label brands. So it definitely does happen. Could be an interesting investigation. 🙂

  2. I have just about every eye shadow NYX makes. There is another kind that, if you haven’t tried it yet, you’re going to love it. It’s NYX Ultra Pearl e/s. They come in individual containers. The containers are large, and the e/s is “quilted” like Chanel. No primer needed. Around here NYX is only in beauty supply stores, and much less expensive than their Web site.

Another line I am falling in love with, more mid-end than hi or lo, is Flirt (in Kohls). Everything is great. What more can I say? Try the e/s in Golden Lady and the l/s in Top Notch. And don’t miss the roller blushes.

  3. Ooha la love. Thanks for the tips. Even though my closet is stuffed with vintage mink, 1950’s Saks, and beaded, chiffon cocktail dresses, I’m a total drugstore makeup whore. I pile on so much black eyeshadow, everyday, all day long, I’ve never seen the sense in shelling out $20 a tube… It’s all in the application…

  4. Carla,

Keep up the good work! This blog is great. We just started writing about beauty products and the science behind their claims and how they work. Your blog is now in one of our permanent links.
