MAC Hey, Sailor for Summer, Review and Swatches

Hey look, it’s MAC Hey, Sailor! There are always a few cues of summertime, and MAC’s summer color collection is always one. In recent years, Surf Baby and To The Beach, and Naughty Nauticals and Cool Heat a few more back. I always feel like my summer memories are tied to the makeup in these collections. And can we all remember the mad search for Marine Life?

Of all of those collections, a few items always stood out. In MAC Hey, Sailor, there are so many standouts. First, the packaging.  The navy and white nautical stripes are irresistible. I’m tempted to even keep the boxes, but am doing my best to avoid hoarder behavior. I’ve already identified some total must-haves – namely the Pro Longwear Bronzing Powder (silky! smooth! gorgeousness!) and the tangerine Riviera Life Lipglass (no need to shell the $ for Chanel’s version!)

But, let’s take a closer look at the collection (note: this is only part of it —there’s a whopping 40 items in Hey, Sailor).

Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Shore Leave; Sun Tints in Sea Mist, Abalon; Lipglass in Cut Loose, Riviera Life; Lipstick in To Catch a Sailor

Rounding out the rest of the lip products are:

  • Lipstick ($15.50): Salute (neutral peach); Red Racer (Bright yellow red); Sail la Vie (bright mid-tone orange)
  • Pro Longwear Lip Pencil ($19): Saunter (pale nude beige); Throw Me A Line! (bright true red)
  • Lipglass ($15.50): Orange Tempera (pale peach); Blessedly (rich pale coral); Send Me Sailing (bright yellow red)
  • Suntints SPF 20 Liquid Lip Balm ($16): Au Rosé (poppy coraly pink with gold pearl)

Our thoughts: Riviera Life is a MUST. It’s so tangerine and glossy. I’d be lying if I didn’t say the packaging didn’t add to the overall awesome-ness. You won’t be disappointed in this. And? It’s half the price of the Chanel Glossimer in Calypso, from the summer collection, which I’d been eyeing up but am no longer! The Sun Tints also present a worthy SPF option for lips. And, MAC wasn’t joking in the official description of To Catch a Sailor (calls it a highly frosted beige). I still kinda dig it…but feel like its a dated look this season.

Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Hand Forged, Blue Stripe; Pigment in Old Gold; Eyeshadow in Feeling Fresh, Jaunty

Rounding out the extensive eye offerings are:

  • Eyeshadow ($16): Crystal Avalanche (veluxe pearl, white with reflects); Barefoot (veluxe pearl, tarnished gold); Nautical (satin, navy blue)
  • Pigment ($21): Naval Blue (deep smoky blue)
  • Powerpoint Eye Pencil ($16): Emerald Sea (kelly green)
  • Zoom Waterfast Lash ($15)

Our Thoughts: I am fixated on that GREEN. Feeling Fresh is stunning and flattering on the eye. It’s the year of color – embrace it everywhere. I’m also slightly obsessing over Jaunty. It’s a simple goldy-beige shade that illuminates the eyelid in .5 seconds. Pigments are powerful, but they just don’t excite me. I think I’m distracted by that GREEN!

Pro Longwear Bronzing Powder ($28) in Nude on Board; Bronzing Powder in Soft Sand ($24); Nail Polish ($16) in Vestral White and Touch of Red.

Our Thoughts: The Pro Longwear Bronzing Powder is WORTHY of the highest praise. They are smooth and soft and wear beautifully on the skin. Nude on Board is a perfect shade for the fair to medium types. I also dig Soft Sand (regular Bronzing Powder, not Pro Longwear), but found it difficult to swatch. On my skin it looks great, but is more subtle. Bottom line, look at the Pro Longwears!

 The other bronzers include:

  • Bronzing Powder ($24) in Refined Golden; Pro Longwear Bronzing Powder ($28) in Sun Dipped.

Powder Blush ($21) in Launch Away! And Fleet Fast

Our Thoughts: They both have a gorgeous satin finish. Launch Away! reminds me of NARS Sex Appeal. Shows up very light on when swatching but works on the cheeks, assuming you have fairish skin. I’m partial to Fleet Fast — it’s a rosy coral. How cool is that?!

High-Light Powder in Crew ($28)

Ok, sorry, I couldn’t resist touching it IMMEDIATELY. The colors smudged a bit. No self control, sorry!

Our Thoughts: For some, this is the piece de resistance. For us, it’s a pretty blush with a kick ass pattern. Seriously, the multi-colored stripes make this so much cooler than it actually is. We struggle to see how it’s a highlighter, but it’s a nice change of pace.

Crew High-Lighter swatches: L-R: all blended together, lavender, pink, peach

The rest of the collection contains To The Beach Body Oils in two blends, Seaside and Man Rays, a Face Blender Brush a set of Makeup Bags and a pretty cool Tote. The accessories are actually pretty cool thanks to the nautical striped pattern dominating the collection.

  1. Oh my gosh, Love your picture Laurie! All those stripes look so festive lined up like that! I’m going mad because the slow hotel internet won’t load your picture of Riviera life!! The bronzing powders, however look gorgeous even in the photos!

  2. Hey sailor collection by Mac is fabulous! The packaging is exquisite and the shades of palettes are gorgeous. Can’t wait to grab one of those.
