I have been living with a deep, dark beauty secret for many years. For all the beauty and cosmetics that make their way in to my house, it has been more than a decade since one of those products has been a new hairbrush. Until recently, that is. I finally ordered a self- intervention. My much-needed brush of choice is Conair’s Tourmaline Ceramic Cushion Brush.
Truth be told, I don’t brush my hair all that much (deep, dark secret #2?) but it’s a whole new experience with this brush. And now that my hair is getting longer, it’s important to make sure it’s detangled and that I’m distributing products throughout my entire hair cuticle. Plus, blow drying with this brush enhances the tourmaline ions and ceramic which helps leave my hair shiny and healthy looking.
But old habits die hard, I still have yet to officially part ways with my old brush. It’s a round, prickly brush that I still really like. It’s falling apart though, and to really disclose what it’s been through, my college roommate even partially threw up on it in 2003. Yes, I know, that’s disgusting. For what it’s worth, it will be laid to rest very soon. Viva new brush!
During my usual browse through the beauty aisles at Target, I stumbled across the most adorablemini-makeup bagfrom Sonia Kashuk. This new “Shimmer” bag collection from Ms. Kashuk has a bit of a rock and roll edge with the metallic on the outside and a nylon brown interior, which makes it very easy to keep tidy. This is the perfect purse-sized bag to tote around — I store my powder, aspririn, Tide To-Go pen, face blotters and some other odds and ends in here. It even features a little pocket on the inside, which is an added bonus to keep smaller items.
This bag was a steal at $5.99 and each piece in the entire collection is available for under $15. I’ve got my eye on the Frame Purse next!
A good base coat really is the key to extending the life of your manicure. CND’s Stickey Base Coat is one of my favorites — both on price and quality. On the weeks I forget to use this, I can tell the difference because I’ll generally get a chip by day three. I am incredibly hard on my nails and constantly wash my hands. Nail polish doesn’t stand a chance without appropriate armor!
Also, a base coat is the first line of defense for nail staining. As a frequent DIY-manicurist at home, I find that a base coat is an easy step that pays dividends throughout the week. Case in point: my Essie Silken Cord mani is still looking sharp for my holiday party tonight!
Yes to Cucumbers Soothing Facial Towelettes hit all the right notes. They’re nearly all natural (98.7%) hypoallergenic, paraben-free and have the most amazing fresh cucumber scent. And to top it off, they are ultra-affordable at about $6 for 30 wipes.
These towelettes can pretty much do it all, but I like them most for a pre-face wash wipe or a refresh on a clean face. They infuse the face with moisture and settle in with an unbelievably refreshingly tingle. They leave behind no film, no fuss and I can see these working on just about anyone with a face!
The travel version shown above is $2.99 for 10 wipes, and while less of a deal in terms of quantity they are perfect to tote around or travel with. I brought these on a trip to Milwaukee last week, and they were sitting in the car the whole day until I checked into a hotel. When I finally used one at night, it was such a rejuvenation because it was practically frozen! I can see myself purposefully freezing them in the summer — but for now, I’ll likely stick with room temp.
Disclosure: We received a sample of this product.
The dry skin doldrums have kicked in and exfoliation is top of mind for me. It’s so important to get rid of dead skin build-up all year, but especially in the winter. I like a more gentler formula for everyday in the cold months so I don’t irritate my skin, and I think I’ve discovered the perfect, budget-friendly option: Tone Sugar Glow Exfoliating Body Wash.
Tone’s Sugar Glow is a creamy formula with fine exfoliating granules. It smells fruity and sweet, and lathers up nicely. My skin gets a good scrub down with this, and I’m pretty sure the huge bottle I picked up for $6 will last forever….or at least until next winter. If you go to Tone’s Facebook page you can also download a $1 off coupon, making this steal an even better deal!
At $32, NARS Eyeshadow Duos are definitely not $10 or less — no matter how you slice it. But we’re in luck this week! Sephora.com currently is selling NARS Eyeshadow Duos in Cheyenne and Wicked for, you guessed it, $10. Cheyenne, shown above, is a duo of metallic sienna and a burgandy plum and Wicked is a duo of yellow opal and shimmering citron.
I’m partial to Cheyenne as I love the color combination. And for $10, it’s a steal!
With Halloween coming up in just a few days, these China Glaze nail polishes from the Awakening collection are perfect! At around $6.50 each (and sometimes better!) these definitely fit the “Ten or Less” bill for the week. The collection consists of 3 new shades:
- Mummy May I: Vampy, wine colored purple with flecks of hot pink glitter.
- Zombie Zest: A mossy green shade with gold flecks of micro glitter.
- Ick-A-Body: A dark green base chock full of orange glitter.
If you’re a fool for glitter shades like I am, you need at least one of these shades in your life. I don’t have shades in my stash like Zombie Zest (my favorite shade in the bunch) and Ick-A-Body so I was pretty excited to see them. There are a few shades you may want to pick up as dupes for more expensive shades. Zombie Zest can fill in for SpaRitual’s Optical Illusion and Mummy May I is a great substitute for Deborah Lippmann’s Bad Romance, only Bad Romance has some chunkier glitter in it.
I’m going to pull out Zombie Zest for a Halloween mani, a little something festive to show the kiddies I hope will be trick-or-treating at my door this year. I’ve never had a kid stop by but this year I’m in a new apartment, maybe I’ll get lucky. How about you? Are you doing a Halloween inspired mani? Have you checked out this collection yet? Let us know in the comments.
Ladies, I’ve been absolutely blown away by the new Carmex Moisture Plus Ultra Hydrating Tinted Lip Balms. I picked up both shades recently — Sheer Peach and Sheer Pink — and am seriously impressed. Last winter, I must have gone through 3 or 4 tubes of the non-tinted version and am thrilled to see that Carmex expanded the line. Not only do these leave a sheer wash of color they are moisturizing beyond belief…and they have that familiar Carmex scent that we know and love.
I swiped these on the back of my hand — Sheer Peach and Sheer Pink, left to right respectively — and don’t they even look moisturizing? They’re glistening! These are such a great deal. The only downside, if you can call it that, is that you can use them up pretty quickly with constant use. But for $3 a tube, you can stock up on several for under $10.
Has anyone else tried these? They’re a fast favorite of ours!
This time of year is rough on my skin because of the seasonal transition. One day it’s warm and humid and the next it’s cold and dry. My skin is just confused. My solution for now and later is Curel’s Ultra Healing Lotion. This stuff is no joke! It’s made for severely dry skin and is intensely moisturizing. It’s a thicker lotion but feels amazing on the skin. It absorbs in a second.
The “secret sauce” if you will from Curel is ceramides – which are natural lipids that serve as the “glue” for surface skin cells. If you suffer from dry or sensitive skin, this usually means you lack ceramides and are more susceptible to environmental factors, like change of season. This formula helps relieve dry skin instantly and lock in moisture.
As an aside, I also love Curel’s sleek new white packaging. It caught my eye at Target, where I bought an extraordinarily large bottle of this for about $8. Can’t beat that!
Yesterday, I was in a meeting at work and something great — yet unexpected — happened. Someone asked me “Do you have new lashes? They are so long?” It was a thrilling moment in my day. My response, “They’re all mine — courtesy of Maybelline “The Falsies.” It actually probably went something like this…”Really…you think? Thank you! You must try this mascara! You can have these lashes too!”
I thought that the only drugstore mascara I would ever really love and repurchase was Cover Girl LashBlast, but Maybelline has caught me by surprise. The “secret sauce” if you will is a patented spoon brush with Kera-fiber formula that builds volume (8x they claim!) without clumping. Unlike other Maybelline formulas, this does not flake off and it truly gives me full and long lashes. So much so that it caught the attention of my client!
The Falsies is a fabulous “ten or less” find — I bought this at CVS on sale for about $6. Has anyone else tried this? Are you digging the spoon brush? Let us know!
