What's in My Bag?

What's in Carla's Bag Today I’m showing you all what’s in my bag. My bag is usually a mess but I cleaned it up a bit though, taking all my receipts and empty gum wrappers out. I don’t want you all seeing how messy I really am! What you see here is a little more than what I usually carry with me, it really depends on how much time I have in the morning. This morning I had more time than usual so I brought some things to touch up with during the day like the NARS Multiple and Suki lip color. This is the Lane bag in Tabacco and it was a gift from Ruehl No. 925. It really roomy and the leather is really soft… no stiffness here.

What's in Carla's Bag

Now onto what I have in it…

  • I got to have my sunglasses. I use to buy cheap pairs of glasses but for the first time I actually spent more than $15 on a pair.
  • Coach wristlet, because I hate carrying around a big huge wallet. This way I have just the essentials. Plus I use it at the gym to store my keys.
  • My Weight Watchers paraphernalia, my journal, welcome book and point counter.
  • Floss, gum, cell phone, mini notebook, glass nail file and convertible hair brush.
  • Elizabeth Arden’s 8 Hour Hand Cream: this stuff is great and helps my hands deal with all the paperwork I have on my desk.
  • Boscia Blotting Linens in Rose.
  • Benefit’s Erase Paste (review coming soon).
  • Cargo PlantLove lipstick in Lola.
  • BillyB Beauty brush #9, Bare Escentuals Flawless Face brush and Smashbox brush #19 (thank you eBay!).
  • Sample of Bobbi Brown’s Hydrating Face Cream that I’m going to try later.
  • Suki Pure Color Cream Stain in Clay.
  • Dr. Hauschka Lip Care Stick
  • Dr. Hauschka Liquid Concealer
  • Trish McEvoy’s Base Essential and Essential Pencil.
  • Laura Mercier
  • Prescriptives Here to Stay Mascara
  • Yves St. Laurent Touche Eclat
  • By Terry Rose Baume Stick
  • Prescriptives Camouflage Cream
  • Bobbi Brown Blemish Cover Stick
  • Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage
  • Revlon Makeup Eraser
  • The Balm Sexy Mama Translucent Pressed Powder, this stuff is great, a review is coming soon!
  • Jane Iredale Pure Pressed Minerals
  • Benefit’s Eye Bright
  • Bobbi Brown Lip Crayon
  • NARS The Multiple in Orgasm
  • and Urban Decay’s Ink, I’m so sad this is discontinued.

Can you see a pattern here? I don’t even use these concealing products all at once but I can’t bare to take them out of my bag. The Laura Mercier concealer was an impulse buy I regret but I keep wanting to give it another chance. I might swap it… who knows. There are always a few things I’m testing in my bag as well. The Dr. Hauschka and Benefit concealers are a few of those items.

What's in Your Bag?

For the next two weeks, Product Girl is having some fun and showing you what’s in our handbags as well as what’s in the handbags of some of our beauty blogging friends. Ever see those features in In Style? That’s what we’re going for here. I always enjoy those features and often create a few lemmings along the way.

We’re starting with Elke Von Freudenberg; celebrity makeup artist, blogger and founder of a network we’re proud to be a member of, The Beauty Blog Network. So what’s in Elke’s bag? Here’s what she says:

Elke Von Freudenberg's Bag An umbrella, because it might rain in NY.

Big black sunglasses.

Saturday at Nordstrom

Last week, I was really looking forward to the annual Nordstrom Spring Trend show. They were unveiling the new Chanel Summer collection at their counters, featuring gifts with purchase for left and right and I’d get a makeover. What I thought would be a fun morning was really a little disappointing but hey, that’s the way it is sometimes.

Nordstrom A few things were disappointing that day. The first is that the “show” part of the event was not there and we didn’t even know until we got there. There was no explanation of this at all. Usually we’d watch a presentation featuring some speakers representing different lines and take part in some giveaways. We got there early to get a good seat for this but it turns out we could have slept in a bit more. Then I had my makeover at the Bobbi Brown counter. The execution wasn’t what I expected. I had 4 layers of product on my undereye area but yet my eyelids didn’t get as much attention. They used Long Wear Cream Shadow (love them!) but only applied some to my lower lid and brow bone… What about the middle? My eye had very little definition, which is what I wanted the most.

Nordstrom Beauty Gift with Purchase Finally, the gift with purchase. I already thought it was bad but then yesterday I get an email from Nordstrom promoting their online gift with purchase. If you spend over $100, you get a pink tote full of samples. You know what the gift with purchase was at the store? An empty pink makeup bag… that actually matches the tote they are giving away with an online purchase. Trend show events usually give you something for attending. I have a hat box and a train case from events like these. This empty makeup bag looks like a men’s shaving kit bag… only in pink. It just seemed in poor taste to make women spend $100 to get that, give us the same offer you give those buying online. That would have been much better, the gifts from individual counters were better than this and I spent less money to get them. Seeing this left me bummed out but I still love Nordstrom and Bobbi Brown.

What’s been your favorite and worst gift with purchase? I love the one I got from Laura Mercier on Saturday (more on what I bought coming soon). It was a cute little, faux brown snakeskin bag with deluxe samples of foundation, lipstick, exfoliator and shower gel. And I only had to spend $75 to get it.

Tag! I'm It

Henna at Canadian Beauty tagged me so now it’s my turn to participate in this meme.

1.What is the story behind the name of your blog?
I wish I had some funny story to share about this but the name Product Girl just came out due to a lack of creativity! I’m still not crazy about the name and I’ve thought about changing it quite a bit. I once thought I’d hold a contest to help rename the site but I didn’t follow through with it. The name will definitely be changed but still unsure as to when. I’d love to hear what everyone thinks about this though!

2. Why did I start blogging?
I started blogging about 10 years ago and it wasn’t even beauty related. In 2005, I realized I would have more fun if I blogged about products I bought and liked using. I didn’t want to include them on my main blog so I created a separate blog just for this idea and that is how Product Girl was born. It has always been about sharing my finds with others and learning about new products. I also really liked the connection to others that blogging gave me and hoped the same would be true for the beauty blog. I had no idea so many beauty product addicts were out there when I started!

3. What is your best and worst blogging experience?
The best experience of my life so far has been turning my hobby of personal blogging into a full time job. In September 2005, I went to work for Six Apart (the company behind TypePad). Even though I left the company at the end of June last year, I had an amazing experience. It’s not very often that someone has a chance to turn a hobby into a paying job. Even writing this blog, there have been some great experiences. We’ve been in the NY Times and in Women’s Wear Daily but I’ll never forget listening to my podcast voicemail and hearing a message from Heather Park from MAC. It was like validation for all my work over the years. Fortunately, I don’t really have any negative experiences with regard to Product Girl and let’s hope it stays that way.

4. What do I think will happen to the blog in 2008?
I really hope that this is the year that this blog really grows and gets better than ever, I feel like it hasn’t really grown or gone anywhere lately so that needs to change. I have some great things planned like new features we’ll run on a regular basis, video podcasts, my friend Lea (who’s absolutely amazing) will be writing soon, a new look and I’ll finally give away some loot to our readers. I think this year will be a great year for Product Girl, things are already looking up since January.

Now it’s my turn to tag a few more bloggers… I’m tagging Shannon at A Girl’s Gotta Spa and Makeup Minute, Erika at Makeup Bag and Lianne The Makeup Girl. You’re it!

My Favorite Things from 2007

It’s that time of year again, when we all start to reflect on the past year. As with last year, I’m joining my fellow beauty/fashion bloggers and recapping a few of my favorite things from 2007.

Favorite Things from 2007

Vincent Longo Lip Stains As a girl with a huge obsession with lip stains, this one took the cake for me this year. I stalked every Sephora in my area waiting for Vincent Longo’s Pearlessence Gel Stains to come in and when they finally did, it was love. This lipstain is great, it gives your lips some shimmer but it can also double as a great cheek color with some shimmer as well. Lipcolor and a highlighter in one? Who knew.

Lorac Perfectly Lit Oil Free Luminizing Powder I have to thank Sephora’s Beauty Insider program for this product. I first tried Lorac’s Perfectly Lit Oil Free Luminizing Powder as a deluxe sample and when it was finally gone, I bought a full sized version of the product. I love the shades that this product comes in, it’s a great match for my skin tone and it gives me a very pretty glow. Not only that, it blends in very well and doesn’t settle.

Ineke's After My Own Heart I would have never found this perfume on my own so I have to thank my friend for that. We swapped some perfume for makeup and I came away with this lovely perfume. It’s Ineke’s After My Own Heart and it features top notes of bergamot, raspberry and crisp green foliage, middle note of lilac and base notes of sandalwood, heliotrope and musk. All of this makes for a very freshing lilac scent. Lilac is my favorite flower but I often find most lilac scents to be too rich and overpowering. It’s not that way at all with this scent. I love the way it lingers on my skin and clothes, it’s just delicious.

Chanel's Lotus Rouge Nail Colour This year marked the first time I tried Chanel products. One of my very favorite of those products was the fall collections’s Lotus Rouge nail color. I’ve been wearing this gorgeous red shade on my hands and toes over and over again and I’m about to go for another round in just a little bit. I’ve read some opinions that this polish chips too easily but I haven’t found that to be a problem at all. Let’s hope that it continues to stay that way.

Bond No, 9 Chinatown candle This is another revelation that I have to thank my friend for, Bond No. 9′s Chinatown candle. I had never really experienced Bond No. 9 fragrances until I smelled this candle and it really opened my eyes to the wonder that is Bond No. 9. The Chinatown scent features notes of peach blossom, gardenia, tuberose, patchouli and cardamom. This makes for a beautiful floral with just the right touch of spice. Something about this scent is so sexy to me, I love burning this candle, so much that I burn it very sparingly.

What's Your Everyday Look?

First off, I want to apologize for the lack of posts over the last few days. We experienced some technical difficulties with our publishing tool and it seems to be resolved now.

Until recently, I worked at home and didn’t put on my “full face” on a daily basis. Now I’ve been doing this for almost 2 months and I’ve settled on my go to products for my everyday look, a neutral look that I’m very happy with right now. Here’s what I’ve been wearing:

Foundation: Susan Posnick ColorFlo Foundation in M3
Blush: Jane Iredale PurePressed Blush in Barely Rose
Highlighter: Lorac Perfectly Lit Oil-Free Luminizing Powder in Radiant
Eyes: Too Faced Lash Injection Mascara, MAC Cosmetics Paint Pots in Painterly, Mally Beauty Tribeca Taupe Smokey Eye Kit
Lips: Laura Mercier Lip Stain in Shy Pink

The best thing about this look is that it takes me just a few minutes to pull it together and I can easily jazz it up for a night out. It’s also very long lasting so I don’t have to touch up as often at work. Bonus!

So now I’m wondering, what are your everyday go to products? Bonus points for pictures of you in your look or of your makeup bag. You might just win something special from us. Leave some comments, de-lurk for the day.

It's Here, It's Here!

This week has been a busy week for me (which is why I didn’t post on Wednesday and Thursday, sorry about that!) and the one thing that’s kept me going is today. All week I have been thinking of heading over to Nordstrom’s after work and picking up everything I pre-ordered as part of the anniversary sale. I will be a kid in a candy store come 5pm today. smile

Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Deodorant There are a ton of things I didn’t talk about that are exclusive to Nordstrom’s sale but here’s something that I’m picking up today. This is Donna Karan’s Cashmere Mist Deodorant Trio. This is one of my favorite perfumes and trying this for the first time just seemed right. I haven’t looked back since, it’s a fantastic deodorant. To complete the layering effect, I’m also picking up the Cashmere Mist Cleansing Lotion. I really wanted the body lotion to go with this but um, my wallet said no.

Missing in Action

You may have noticed that there’s been a lack of activity on Product Girl recently, that we have been missing in action for a little while. Well, there’s good reason for that. There has been a lot happening in my life recently, like planning a move and getting a new job… both things that I’m very excited about. There’s also things happening behind the scenes here, like a blog makeover and new guest authors in the works. We’ll be back next week and ready for action. Here are a few things you may have missed, that we would have talked about:

Eve from the Tambourine videoIn the meantime, here’s one thing you’ll want to add to your calendar. MAC Cosmetics will be hosting a special chat with Viva Glam spokesperson Eve and her makeup artist JJ on June 27th. Doesn’t this look from her Tambourine video look hot? It uses the colors from the new C-Shock collection. This just reinforces that there are plenty of ways to use even the loudest, bold colors.

Be there on Wednesday at 5:00pm – 6:00pm EST / 2:00pm – 3:00pm PST. See you there, off to think of some good questions to ask JJ.

Frustation Is…

Vincent Longo Pearlessence Gel Stains … driving to the 4 Sephora stores in the area to find the new Vincent Longo Pearlessence Gel Stains only to be told at the last stop they will arrive in stores in Friday. I was so excited to pick some of these up since these are my absolute favorite lip stains. These new shimmery lip and cheek gel stains were featured in the Sephora “Summer Survival” catalog so I thought it was safe to assume it would be in stores now. Imagine my surprise that the Seattle area stores didn’t think to stock all the items they are promoting in that catalog. I’m too impatient to order them online but even if I wanted to, I couldn’t get all three… some are temporarily out of stock. I will be first in line to get them on Friday though, this time I’m driving to only one store. The things I do for cosmetics. :)
