Currently Loving for Summer: Monochromatic Bronze Makeup

Over the long holiday weekend, I found myself reaching for a familiar few products to give me a bronzed look with a touch of shimmer. It’s an easy summer look that feels natural that takes no more than five minutes. I’ve been a stickler for skin care this summer. Determined not to get too much sun (or any on my face, really) and keep my skin in balance. It’s been working, and as a result I’ve been able to abandon a lot of face makeup. My hero product to thank (not shown here) is definitely the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pads.

Here’s the rundown on my other bronzing essentials:

Stila All Over Shimmer Duo - Both Carla and I use this constantly. On the eyes, on the cheekbones. Anywhere goes. I find I dust the lighter portion on my eyelids and along my cheekbones and take the darker shade and apply just under my browbone. It gives some dimension to my eyes without really wearing eyeshadow.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Brow Mousse - Finished brows are critical to any makeup look, but especially a “no-makeup” look. They pull everything together and give the face some structure. I use Tarte’s Brow Mousse (exclusive to QVC right now) in Taupe. I love the formula and the brush it comes with too! It gives a very natural look, and the Taupe is a perfect match.

Tarte Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart MascaraTarte makes amazing mascaras – and the best part is they contain ingredients that help repair and strengthen your lashes. This is crazy volumizing and really opens up my eyes. Oh, and no flaking or smearing. It’s not waterproof, but I haven’t experienced any breakdown on a hot (and sweaty) day. And, it’s only $19. If you’re a Dior girl, you should yourself the $$ and give this a try. It’s better.

Fresh Sugar Honey Tinted Lip Treatment - Sugar Honey is a rosy nude with a hint of brown (see swatch below) and is very natural on the lips. It also has SPF 15!

Stila Sparkle Waterproof Liquid Liner in Rock Candy – These liners wowed me from the start, and I’ve been favoring the sparkly bronze Rock Candy liquid eyeliner lately. It’s more fun than a matte version and easier to apply than a cream, gel or pencil. Perfect for summer.

NARS Laguna Illuminator – I squeeze out about two drops on the back of my hand, take my MAC 131 (a flat duo-fibre powder brush) and blend as a counter on the cheeks, along the sides of my face and along my jawline. It’s a sparklier formular, but it doesn’t look glittery on the face, just bronzed. It feels wonderful on the skin too — the liquid is a blast of cool which I welcome when the humidity level in my bathroom is high.

Too Faced Primed and Poreless Skin Smoothing Face Primer – If I’m going for a bronzed look, I’ve got to keep my pores in check. This primer does tthe trick by creating a flawless canvas. It contains vitamins A & C, Mulberry extract and a dose of retinol to perk up tired skin. It comes out of the tube in a nude color but blends into skin without color.

Beauty VIP of the Week: Stila Prime Pot Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer

I’m a big fan of eye primers, basically anything that will help keep color or product on my eyes is good in my book. My lids are super oily so I’m of the opinion that if I am able to get decent wear time on my lips with something, it will most likely be amazing on someone else. I put Stila’s Prime Pot Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer to the test and it quickly became my good friend; it is this week’s VIP.

These Prime Pots made their debut at Spring 2011 Fashion Week as Stila’s Pro Artists reached for something that would hold up under the bright lights and long hours of Fashion Week. These Prime Pots were designed to be a lightweight and waterproof primer available in two shades; Taffy and Caramel, and retail for $20 each.

The first time I tried this primer, I was afraid the lightest shade would be too dark on my lids but after applying it, my fears were laid to rest. The shade is great to neutralize my lids since I have a lot of discoloration on them, it appears dark on my hand but on the eye is it not as dark as it seems and is buildable if you need more of the product/coverage.

Sparkle This Summer with Stila Sparkle Waterproof Liquid Eye Liners

Stila has created something pretty magical, as far as makeup goes, with this summer’s Sparkle Waterpoof Liquid Eyeliner. They combine everything I love for summer. Sparkle! Color! More sparkle! And indeed, these are waterproof. In fact, they almost border on permanent. Carla swatched these last month at The Makeup Show  and traces remained on her hands the next day still. It wasn’t a test, but they sure did pass!

The Perfect Flush, Every Time, with Stila's Custom Color Blush

I’m never one to shy away from a brighter than bright pink blush, which is what I’d classify Stila’s Custom Color Blush as — at least on the surface. But the operative word here is “custom.” Stila created a PH-based powder that reacts with your skintone to create the perfect flush — your very own personalized blush. While I totally love what I see in the pan, the end result on my cheeks is more of a pinky-rose.  In addition to its magical color-matching abilities, the powder also melts into your skin flawlessly. I love it when makeup does the work for me!

My One Minute Eye, and Obsession with Stila's Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner

As much as I love experimentation, having an easy, go-to eye makeup look can be just as exciting. And, seriously, sleeping just a few moments longer in the mornings is necessary at times.  But I never sidestep the beauty routine completely. I need eyeliner, and I need it bad.

Stila’s got my back in the easy and exciting department. Stila’s Eye Shadow Trio in Ethereal is foolproof and gives you the look of a 10 minute eye, at least. I love the shimmering champagne peach and taupe, they complement my blue eyes and go with everything. And, for those looking for a more budget-friendly version of Ethereal, I noticed the colors look pretty similar to the Wet n’ Wild trio in Silent Treatment (review of that here).

The other critical part of my 60 second eye look is liquid liner. And I cannot get enough of Stila’s Stay All Day version in dark brown. It’s more forgiving than black, is the perfect complement to my Ethereal look, and looks the same at 6pm as it does as 7am. I’m going to start hoarding tubes of this stuff, it’s that good!

Stila Coconut Crush Lip & Cheek Stain

Speaking of brown lip stains, my favorite lip stain for spring and summer is Stila’s Coconut Crush. Frankly, I’m a little surprised there hasn’t been more talk about this.

I’ve told you before that I LOVE me some lip stains. I have a drawer in my stash that is dedicated to them, I’m that serious about them. But if you looked through my drawer, you would only a few brown stains. Few brands have made them and it’s a shame because they lend themselves perfectly towards a long wearing neutral lip. My favorite brown stain of all time was Urban Decay’s Ink in Naked. I stocked up on that shade when they were getting ready to discontinue it but I’ve always had room in my heart for more brown stains.

Beauty VIP of the Week: Stila Jade Blossom Hair Refresher

This week my Beauty VIP is Stila’s Jade Blossom Hair Refresher. I’ve been under the weather this week and washing my hair each day just was not my priority. This is where Stila’s Hair Refresher came into play. More and more, this has become my go-to dry shampoo for a few reasons.

Quite a few dry shampoos do not agree with my scalp and cause it to flake or itch.  This one does not give my any problem, I could use it everyday and not worry about any flakes developing.  It also smells really good! If you know and love Stila’s Jade Blossom scent, then you’ll love this even more in your hair. I love the way this adds fragrance to my hair but it is not overwhelming at all, I can still wear a different perfume if I want to.

I’m also a fan of its application. It is not in an aerosol can, instead it is in a plastic bottle that relies on a “pouf” in the cap to dispense the product. This makes it hard to overuse the product because the “pouf”, for lack of a better word, prevents you from spilling more powder onto your hair than you need. When you squeeze the bottle, you get a gentle cloud of powder applied to your hair each time. For whatever reason, other “pouf” applicators I’ve used in the past have never worked as well as this one does. I know I tend to over do it with spray dry shampoos so this is super helpful to me.

Finally, let’s talk about texture. Very few dry shampoos do little to improve the texture of your hair, at least the ones that I have tried. Most appear to absorb oil in hair but hair still feels a little bit off. With this product my hair feels as though it’s been basking in the ocean’s salty breeze. I like the texture so much that I’ve started adding a gentle “pouf” to my hair even on days when I don’t need it’s oil absorbing powers.

Have you tried this? If not, what’s your favorite dry shampoo? I think it’s safe to say both Laurie and I are dry shampoo connoisseurs.

What's in Her Makeup Bag with Stila's Sarah Lucero

It’s been awhile since we introduced our What’s in Her Makeup Bag feature but it’s back now! This time we’re taking a peek into the makeup bag of Stila’s own Sarah Lucero.

Sarah is one of Stila’s pro makeup artists. If you watched E! during awards season, you probably saw one of Sarah’s TV spots she did for the network. She gave the gals from The Hills Mad Men style makeovers (how gorgeous did Lo look??) and also used Stila’s E! Live from the Red Carpet palettes during some of her makeovers.

I am so happy that Sarah agreed to show us what’s in her makeup bag because she is such an amazing artist and I have to admit that I’m always curious about what a professional makeup artist carries around with them in their off hours. Sarah is the first lead artist for a brand that I have met, which is a bit intimidating for me but she puts you right at ease and is such a sweetheart. I was actually shocked that she remembered who I was when I saw her the second time! :)

Keep reading to see what’s in Sarah’s makeup bag.

Beauty Bests and Spring Trends from Aveeno Ambassadors

You know what happens when you gather 25 beauty and lifestyle bloggers together for a weekend right? It’s a beauty product extravaganza, and a great learning experience. I for one, love to know what products others are obsessing over and even grilled the Aveeno brand and PR teams on their beauty must-haves.  Thought I’d share a few tidbits with you! There were some clear trends: Lots of lashes and bold lips.

When I arrived at the hotel (Shutters in Santa Monica — gorgeous!) and did a quick change in the lobby bathroom post-flight, pre-spa, I met Jodi from Multitasking Mommy. While I was using Tarte’s Park Avenue Princess bronzer to perk up my face, she was using items in her travel-friendly Trish McEvoy planner. It was at that moment I did a d’oh and put my palm on my forehead — I always forget to travel with my planner!

Nude nails are great for spring. We each got a mani/pedi during an afternoon of spa-ing, and many of us opted for the classic nude shade OPI’s Tickle My France-y. It’s a very chameleon shade depending on the light, and now I’m obsessed with it. I need my own bottle!

Lashes and bold lips, worn beautifully by Elizabeth from Beauty Bets and Romy from Romy Raves. They both have lash extensions, and now I’m fixated on getting them myself. Elizabeth did reveal that pre-extensions she was all about Buxom Lash Mascara. To add to the fabulosity, Romy even had hair feather extensions. You can see them in the photo, they are very cool.

All weekend long, Felicia of ThisThatBeauty sported the most amazing red lip, courtesy of Stila’s Long Wear Liquid Lip Color in Fiery. Check out her recap and see for yourself! Amber of Beauty Junkies Unite also wore an impressive pink lip on several occasions. Among the choices in her bag included a bright color from CoverGirl’s Lip Perfection Lipstick line. Amber was raving about the formula, along with the new CoverGirl Natureluxe Balms.

I also took the opportunity to chat with the Aveeno folks and find out what they most loved from the brand. I lost count with how many folks told me they loved the Skin Brightening Daily Scrub.  I shall add that to my Target shopping list! I also love talking with men about the products they use. The brand manager from Aveeno Baby and Sun Care revealed that he uses Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream as aftershave.

So the moral of this post is play up the lashes, don a bold lip and keep your nails neutral this spring. I’m on board!

Disclosure: Aveeno and RecycleBank sponsored my trip and spa services mentioned in this post.

Get Ready for Award Season with Stila for E! Live From the Red Carpet

Red carpet season officially kicks off this Sunday with the Golden Globes. And almost as exciting as critiquing the beauty and fashion dos and don’ts of the red carpet, are these Stila E! Live From the Red Carpet Palettes. These palettes were created by Stila’s Celebrity Makeup Artist Sarah Lucero, and they are so adorable, we can hardly choose just one. Good news for us is that they are only $25 — a great, great deal!
