I had hope that it wouldn’t, but winter has arrived. It’s the coldest morning of the season (at least in Chicago — brrr!). What more appropriate time to talk spring? The thrill of using a brand new eye shadow palette is a feeling I crave. And spring beauty gives me something to look foward to – like actual spring weather! Here are a few palettes in particular that have captivated our early attention.
Christian Dior once said, “After women, flowers are the most heavenly creation.” So it makes sense that the brand’s spring 2012 collection, Garden Party, is inspired by the garden he created in the cliffs of Normandy. And just LOOK at these eyeshadow palettes. The 5-Couleurs Garden Edition palettes ($59 each) in Garden Pastels and Garden Roses are stunning. I think the greens in the Pastels look so wearable. And the intricate pattern is beautiful.
Bobbi Brown’s Ultra Nude Eye Palette ($45) from the upcoming Neons and Nudes collection is classic Bobbi. I’ve long loved her classic nude eyshadows, and this contains six of the best ((Stone, Chino, Pink Chandelier, Praline, Champagne, and Cocoa Berry.) Pair any of these shadows with a bright neon lip, per Bobbi’s instructions, and you’re set for spring.
The Smashbox “Be Discovered” palette ($44) includes eight shadows (six shimmer + two matte) that give you endless options. I love the bronzey neutrals, but the shimmery purple is what caught my eye most. Like all Smashbox palettes, there’s not a lemon in the bunch!
Anything catch your eye? If you could splurge on just one, which would it be?
The new Smashbox Limitless Lip Stain and Color Seal Balms have my heart all a twitter. I’ve been waiting for these patiently ever since Lori Taylor told me about them when I met her… because you know I love lip stains, right?
These new Smashbox stains retail for $23.00 each and come in 6 shades, a good offering for a new a product like this. Honestly, I only have eye for one shade right now, their Nude. Not many brands put our brown lipstains but they should because they make a great neutral base when done right.
It does have the same curious Revlon-like packaging but the balm in this stain is also colored to match. I have to admit, I wondered how similar the two formula’s are and I’ll definitely be putting it to the test but for now I’m just happy another brand is doing a brown.
This week we’re taking a look inside the makeup bag of none other than Lori Taylor, one of Smashbox’s Pro Makeup Artists. I had the pleasure of meeting her a few weeks ago at Nordstrom’s Spring Trend Show and she was kind enough to tell us what’s inside her makeup bag and why.
Lori and I chatted about what’s ahead for Smashbox in the summer and beyond. If you’re a lip stain addict like me, you’ll be happy to know that Smashbox is introducing lip stains to their line up next month… you know I’ll definitely be checking those out. They also just released their Softbox collection online which should be heading into stores soon. I have my eye on their Softbox Eye Shadow palette, Smashbox is on a roll with their eyeshadow palettes lately. I’m still enjoying their In Bloom Eye Shadow palette from their spring, which I’ll have more on that soon with swatches. For now, let’s see what Lori has in her makeup bag.
The other Ulta exclusive I picked up last week was Smashbox’s Perfect Smoky Eye Kit. At a dollar less than the Tarte set, this set includes a full size Limitless Eye Liner in Smoke (shimmering dark grey), Waterproof Shadow Liner in Envy (sparkling black) and Shadow Liner #30 brush. QVC has had sets similar to this in the past but my wallet likes this one much better… and the exclusive shade.
What I love about Smashbox’s Shadow Liners is that they are a fool-proof way to get that smudged eyeliner look, and with this shade, a fool-proof smoky eye. The cream formula goes on like an eyeshadow but without leaving any fallout behind and it’s just so easy to blend. My only issue with these is that I don’t have more of them!
OK, it’s not $10 or less but if you take the bargain of a price and divide by 4 (the number of eyeliners you get for the price), this is a fantastic deal and each is still under $10. It’s so fantastic that I couldn’t resist picking up this Smashbox Wish for the Perfect Pencils set when I stopped by Ulta this week.
The 4 pencils in the set are Onyx (black), Orchid (deep purple), Graphite (metallic slate gray) and 14K (gold). They are travel sized liners but they are very generously sized. I have been wanting to try this eyeliner for awhile now and with this price, I can try 4 shades for less than the cost of 1 full sized liner. Not only that but the wear is great! They glide on the skin with ease and after the formula sets, it does not move.
Have you tried the Smashbox Limitless Eye Liner?
Next time you’re wandering through the aisles at Ulta, go to the Smashbox display and check out the Smashbox Luscious Lips. When I saw it, I caved immediately, mainly due to the Doubletake Lipcolor in Guava in the set. I’m a sucker for a chunky lip pencil and I already had a few of these in my stash. This trio also includes includes Reflection High Shine Lipgloss and Limitless Long Wearing lipgloss with SPF 15 in Everlasting. For $25, I couldn’t pass this up.
Are you getting excited for Fall yet? With all the Fall collections we are seeing being released right now, I definitely am. I can’t wait to see the leaves changing colors, break out some sweaters, drink Starbucks Pumpkin Spice lattes and of course wear some darker, richer colors. The Smashbox Masquerade collection has just the colors I am looking for and I’m dying to check it out in person.
Masquerade Eye Shadow Palette ($35)
This palette looks like it could just the palette I need for Fall. It is arranged horizontally in trios so you can wear the three coordinating shades together or however you like. Shades in this palette include soft matte peach, shimmering black plum, matte taupe, metallic khaki, shimmering gold, bronze, metallic cabernet, shimmering navy and a matte bone.
Masquerade Baked Fusion Soft Light Palette ($32)
I’ve always wanted to try a Fusion Soft Light palette but have never made the leap, I might have to do this time. This baked bronzing palette features shades of champagne, soft gold and rose gold that can be used on their own or swirled together for gorgeous glowing skin.
Masquerade Creamy Cheek Color & Brush ($29)
This is the product I am most excited about from this collection. This product has creamy cheek color on one end and then a blending brush on the other end. Is it a creamy matte color or does it have some shimmer to it? I’m definitely going to find out.
Masquerade Lip Enhancing Gloss ($19)
This season’s shades are Reveal (golden nude) and Disguise (golden pink). These glosses are said to be nourishing and moisturizing, have you tried them?
Masquerade Liquid Liner & Lash Overlay ($19)
Finally, these new liquid liners serve more than one purpose. You can line your eyes with these Teal and Bronze shades but you can also give your lashes a bit of a kick. You can use the rod to also sweep color on top of your lashes. Mascara and liners usually are not in my go-to category but I’m curious to see how this works. How about you?
The Masquerade collection is available online now at smashbox.com. Anything here tempting you? Tell us about it in the comments.
Smashbox does great value sets for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, and in general. One of the brand’s exclusive offerings for 2010 is called “Evening Chic Beauty,” and it includes:
- Full-size Photo Finish Primer
- Eye Shadow Quad in Glitz
- Limitless Eye Liner Pencil in Onyx
- Photo Finish Lid Primer
- Medium Lip Gloss in Posh
And of course, the “chic” bag that can double as a clutch is also included. The price point is very good (comparatively) at $59. The Limitless Eye Liner is a new product for summer and is a designed to be creamy and long-wearing. We haven’t put them to the test ourselves, but we saw the lovely Karen at Makeup and Beauty Blog just posted a review. Click here to check it out!
Smashbox has been making news lately – it was announced this week that the brand has been acquired by Estee Lauder. According to Estee Lauder, “Smashbox fits perfectly within our DNA.” Can’t argue there! We think Smashbox is a fabulous brand, that actually fits perfectly with our DNA too. Especially Smashbox’s ‘Highlights’ Creamy Cheek Color from the new Naked Beauty collection.
It’s really a very simple product that is perfection. Two equal halves – one part creamy highlighter the other creamy blush. The highlighter is a soft pink with minimal shimmer, so impossible to overdo, and the blush is a rosy pink. It’s actually like three products in one because when you blend the two together, you get a softer pink blush. You can also achieve dewy skin using using the highlighter on the high points of your face over a tinted moisturizer. Skip the setting powder and you’ve got a summery glow. I absolutely love this product!
Smashbox has released Heartbreaker Rollerball Fragrance exclusively to Nordstrom to compliment their upcoming spring Heartbreaker collection.
I have to say, I find it a little odd that Smashbox is releasing a fragrance all of the sudden. It’s a pleasant surprise though. I was even more pleasantly surprised to find that this fragrance is also a perfume oil. I love perfume oils and I wish more perfumes were available in an oil form. It instantly reminded me of Starlet from Lulu Beauty. The fragrance is very fitting for spring though. It has a gardenia heart complimented with a little spice and musk that gives the fragrance a very earthy, sexy vibe. Here are the notes:
- Top notes: rose and blue violet.
- Middle notes: gardenia, jasmine, nutmeg, mace and clove.
- Base Notes: musk, marzipan and vanilla.
The spice in this fragrance is inspiring me to search for more perfumes with nutmeg and clove, I love the earthiness it gives a scent. So what do you think? Will you give this a try? You can find this in Nordstrom stores now and online.
If you’re curious about the upcoming spring Heartbreaker collection, catch Smashbox’s Holly Mordini on QVC on Tuesday at 4am, 2pm and 9pm EST. She’ll be introducing the collection as well as introducing the new Smashbox PRO line. I’ll be watching, I think I need their Pink Sugar Roller Gloss in my life… my DVR is set.
