Shu Uemura To Be Discontinued in the U.S.

Women’s Wear Daily is reporting that Shu Uemura parent company L’Oreal is pulling it’s Shu Uemura displays and counters from US stores. If you are like me and like to make your Shu purchases in person, I’m afraid you only have a little while longer to do that because soon your only option will be purchasing from the brand’s website.

So why is L’Oreal shifting gears with Shu Uemura? Carol Hamilton, president of L’Oréal USA’s Luxury Division explained:

We love the brand, but it is a very small part of our portfolio. It’s a simple decision after a very complex analysis: we have a very large portfolio, and we want to focus on growing the brands which have a larger presence in the U.S. market.

Some of the larger brands referred to above are Lancome, Giorgio Armani and Yves Saint Laurent. Did you know that the brand does 80% of its business in Asia? With a stat like that, the move starts to make more sense but definitely saddens me. I think a trip to my local Shu counter is in order to starting building a wishlist. How about you?

Product Girl 2009 Favorite Beauty Products – Lips & Eyes

Happy New Year to all of our readers! Are you ready to say goodbye to the ’00 decade? We’re gearing up for an exciting year here at Product Girl, but first we need to talk about the best and greatest beauty that 2009 had to offer… and a few products we brought with us into the new year from 2008. We’re starting it all off with our favorite lip and eye products.

Remember when we first talked about Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tars? If you haven’t tried them yet, you’re really missing out. With these liquid lip colors, you can play makeup artist and create a custom shade just for you.

CoverGirl Outlast Lip Stains stole our heart this year. With their great range of shades and their wallet friendly price, they are so hard to resist! Plus the felt tip point to these stains do double duty as lip color and lip liner. Did you pick some up this year?

Continuing on with the liquid lip color, Chanel Rouge Allure Laque was a big hit with us this year. This one delivers on all fronts; long lasting, richly pigmented and feels weightless on the lips. Plus it looks oh so glamorous in your makeup up.

Laura Mercier Lip Velvet is the last liquid lip color we’ll badger you with. Laura Mercier’s is a little different from the Chanel Rouge Allure Lacque, it goes on a bit thicker but feels so cushy on and gives the same long lasting, richly pigmented color that we love.

We have gotten well acquainted with Lipstick Queen Chinatown Glossy Pencils this year. They have been my go-to lip color when I don’t feel like wearing a lot of color and/or dealing with a lip gloss. As I mentioned, it does a great job of giving me sheer color and keeping my lips moist.

Shu Uemura’s Rouge Unlimited Supreme Shine is a major fave around here. I know, we keep telling you.  But this formula stands out in a big way with it’s moisturizing properties and dewy shine. Once you try it, we think you’ll be in love with it just like we are.

We think Stila really shined with its Smudge Pots this year, especially the Stila Kitten Smudge Pot. It’s shimmery champagne goodness is the perfect eye base and brightener. It might be our favorite of the whole “kitten” family.

NARS Brumes Eyeshadow duo is meant for blue-eyed girls! It consists of the most smooth matte charcoal and shimmery blue slate colors, and makes for an amazing smokey eye that really pops.

The Style Black collection was a highlight for us this year – the Greasepaint Stick especially. It’s a great base, a great liner and it performs! No smudging – unless you want it to! –  and it even has a built-in sharpener, which is perfect when you want to get a finer tip to line.

For as many mascaras as we try, Cover Girl Lash Blast seems to always have a home in our makeup bag. It delivers consistent results and plumps up our lashes effortlessly.

Now you tell us, what are your favorite eye and lip products of 2009?

Shu Uemura Wishes Upon a Star this Holiday Season

Shu Uemura is doing something pretty cool right now. Each week, through December 27, Shu will be fulfilling one lucky person’s wish list. When you log-on (or register) to your account on their Web site you’ll be invited to select your favorite Shu products to your wish list (up to five or a $250 value) and each week they’ll draw one person at random to win.

Sounds good to us! Even if we don’t win, it’s an easy one to enter. I added my favorite lipstick in the world (I’m never going to stop raving about this!), a painting liner, cleansing oil and a few items from the Shu’s holiday collection, Wish Upon a Star. Has anyone checked out this collection yet – it’s really cute. I’m not totally into cats, but if you are…oh my gosh, this is for you! This holiday, Shu teamed with world-renowned Japanese fashion designer Tsumori Chisato.

The collection is solid with face palettes, highlighting powder, a lip gloss trio, brush set, lipstick  and other accessories – all limited edition and adorned with Tsumori Chisato’s designs! My favorite is the Radiant Ribbon Couture palette (added to my Shu wish list!). The palettes seem to be the best bang for your buck at $65, each features three pressed eye shadows, a cream liner, a cream highlighter, a blush and two dual-ended applicators.

You can see the rest of the collection online. Did anyone grab any of this during Shu’s recent Friends & Family sale? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Beauty Bloggerati Must Have Makeup Brushes

Bloggerati Logo

Brushes are an obsession of mine right now… one of many obsessions. 🙂 I recently picked up the Laura Mercier Deluxe Mini Brush Set, another MAC 217 brush to apply concealer and Shu Uemura Natural 18 Goat Brush for foundation.

With the Laura Mercier set, I just couldn’t pass it up. How perfect is this for traveling? I’m taking this baby to Fashion Week in February for sure. That was my excuse for picking this set up… plus with the Sephora Friends & Family sale and a giftcard for my birthday I paid about $20 for this set.

With the MAC 217 brush, I recently spent some quality time with a senior artists at my local MAC store and I was surprised when used this brush on me to apply concealer. In fact, this artist actually owns quite a few 217 brushes and uses each one differently. The fibers in this brush are fantastic for a natural looking and buildable application. Plus the size is perfect for the undereye area or a spot application. When Rick was done, my skin was gorgeous… and looked like it was completely bare.

When I picked up the Shu Uemura 18 brush, I had the same premise in mind… relying on the fibers in the brush to give myself a more natural application with foundation. The MAC 217 brush is great but in this case, I wanted to get something bigger to cover a wider area. When I met Gina Brooke and had an artist at the Shu counter use my makeup, they used this brush and when you combine this brush and the Shu Uemura Nobara Cream Cover Stick Foundation… perfection!

I’ve decided I can’t live without these brushes so I wanted to know what brushes my fellow Beauty Bloggerati were loving…

Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Supreme Shine

Are you a superstitious person? I’m not usually, but sometimes I do believe that things happen for a reason. All deep, philosophical life decisions aside – in this instance, I’m talking about the new Shu Umerua Rouge Unlimited Supreme Shine lipstick.  Last week, I was convinced that me and this glorious lipstick (or gloss, if you will) weren’t met to be. But alas, we were. A little patience, preceded by a journey throughout Chicago, really paid off.

Allow me to explain. The new Shu Rouge Unlimited Supreme Shine is secretly the best, most hydrating lipgloss secretly packaged like a lipstick. It’s been done before, but not this well. It feels hydrating the instant it meets your lips,  is visibly dewy and full of shine. It has appropriate pigment, staying power and keeps your lips hydrated. The shade I coveted, BG935 (one of the shades used on the model above) is a pinky-nude-beige-mauve and I think would look good on any woman’s lips.

I went to the North Face store in Chicago last week to try on winter coats (I’m not playing around this winter, learned that lesson the hard way) and made a quick stop in Neiman’s to swing by the counters. I zeroed in at Shu Uemura and was drawn like a magnet to this display of lipsticks. I tried to purchase the BG935 shade, but unfortunately it was out of stock. So I decided to try Nordstrom’s and Saks to see if I’d have better luck.  No go. This particular Nordstrom’s doesn’t carry Shu and Saks seems to be phasing out their Shu inventory.  What?! Ahh!

So I finally ordered it from Shu online and this tale ends up with one very happy beauty addict and an amazing lipstick finally united.  Really, that would have been the straightforward option from the beginning but really, Chicago? Stock up on your Shu! Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Supreme Shine will set you back $30. It’s a tad pricey but a very high quality product.

Got any beauty tales to share with us? Have you canvassed your town in search of a lipstick? Do tell…

Halloween Inspiration Shu Uemura Style

Still in need of some Halloween inspiration? Shu Uemura has some great looks that you may want to check out. There are three looks created by Shu Uemura’s makeup artists that are meant to be emulated by us at home. So if you’ve got the skills, the time and the need for a sassy Shu-inspired costume, look no further!

Of the three, my favorite is the Yuki-Onna created by artist Misumi Kitano.

This is one bad chick – she’s the opposite of an ice princess. I think this would be a fun look to recreate and would work well if you wore all-white. I think people would get what you were going for with this look.

And Shu Uemura also has a special Halloween offer going on right now, through October 31. With any $75 online purchase, you’ll receive a complimentary pair of false eyelashes by entering promo code HALLOWEEN at checkout.

Anyone doing anything fun for Halloween this weekend? I’m going trick or treating with my nieces and nephews and bringing my puppy, who will be dressed as a bumble bee. I couldn’t resist – a Boston Terrier in a bumble bee costume? Too cute for words!

Meet Shu Uemura's Artistic Director Gina Brooke

This afternoon I met Shu Uemura’s Artistic Director Gina Brooke at Nordstrom’s Fall Trend show in downtown Seattle. Gina looked gorgeous, looking like she just stepped out of this photoshoot.  She spent a few minutes showing me how I can get that gorgeous glowing look. Right now she’s traveling across the country and she may be coming to your area soon so you can meet with her too!

Shu Uemura's The Pink Collection

If you love pink, then the Shu Uemura Pink collection is right up your alley. It features nine shades of their Rouge Unlimited Lipstick and five shades of the Gloss Unlimited ranging from light pink with yellow and blue tints and dark pink with yellow and blue tints.

Here’s the scoop on this collection straight from Shu Uemura:

As the leader in color and science, shu uemura breaks the boundaries of conventional color with Rouge Unlimited’s Pink Collection, a series of lipsticks and glosses made with a Pink Hybrid Pigment, one of the purest pink pigments ever discovered and patented by the cult Japanese beauty company. Thanks to this breakthrough, this lip collection boasts the most vibrant hues available, creating new and unique shades of pink never seen before.

Until now, pink’s color palette was limited due to the conventional way in which shades were processed and created. This standard method mixes red and white pigments, which create irregular shaped and sized particles that produce dull, muddy pinks. The Pink Hybrid Pigment, which was discovered by shu uemura laboratories, is made up of a fusion between a mineral core and an organic shell, which produces particles that are perfectly round and regular in shape. This consistency is what makes the hues of the lipstick so bright and pure. This is what creates the new and unique hues of pink seen in the collection with shades that range from never before seen light, yellowish, dark and bluish pinks.

Shu Uemura's Mirage Spring Mode 2009 Collection

I don’t know about you but I’m so glad it’s Friday and in just a few hours, my weekend will officially begin. For now, I leave you with some makeup “porn” from Shu Uemura’s Mirage Spring Mode collection.

Rouge Unlimited
Refreshing, vibrant shades that blend well with the lip duo tint shades. Can be used alone or with the lip tint to add a touch of blossoming spring ambiance to the lips. The selection of natural shade in pink, nude and brown will perfectly match the collection’s mode make-up. Shades: PK 347, BG 934 and BR768.

Drawing Pencils
The smooth gliding formula enables matching pastel colors to easily frame the eyelids to accentuate the eye shadow palette. Use them underneath or layer above the eye shadow. Shades: 14ME Light Blue,15 ME Lilac and 04 ME Pink (not pictured).

Eyeshadow Palettes
Trio-palette of mystic colors of light and shadow. The veiled pastel colors create an illusion of Impressionist art. The balance of the “light” colors and “shadow” colors gently defines the eyes. Shades: Fantasia and Utopia.

Lip Duo Tint & Gloss
Add a tint of blossoming colors on your lips and discover the multiple usage and effects of the contrasting textures. The intensely vivid pink rouge adds awakening freshness and the pale translucent gloss envelops your lips with natural shine for a modern look. Can be used on top of rouge unlimited or on your bare lips. Shades:  matte/intense pink rouge and translucent, pale pink gloss.

This collection also includes 2 blush duos in Orange Phase (translucent brown and vivid orange) and Misty Glow (ivory and pale pink). You can find the entire Shu Uemura Mirage Spring mode collection in stores and online along with looks by makeup artists Jason Hoffman and Misumi Kitano.
