Holiday Gift Guide: The Eco Girl

Our holiday gift guides continue with green beauty goodies perfect for The Eco Girl. These natural and organic options are all pampering and earth-friendly. The Eco Girl gift guide is a really special one for us. This year, we discovered so many amazing brands and products that have totally changed our skincare and beauty routines around in the best possible way.  And all of The Eco Girl picks come from brands that are made by passionate women who are truly inspiring.

Talk about passion and heart. The ladies at La Bella Figura have traveled the world to discover exotic ingredients and use them to make the most eco-luxe skincare evah. The La Bella Figura Holiday Healing and Glow Kit is such an amazing gift. You get a little bit of everything with it — facial steam teas, the Bio Active Healing Mask, Barbary Fig Renewal Serum (thank you LBF for intro-ing this phenom ingredient!), a sample set of their fragrance oils and that chic chevron bag to tote it all in.

Team Product Girl had the delight of meeting Maureen Kelly in New York last year and it felt like we were reuniting with a gal pal we’d known forever. One with insane business savvy.  How is that everything Tarte puts out is a must-have?  Like this Tarte Lash Curler & Mascara set in that adorable ikat print. It’s more than cute — the curler is high quality (I prefer it to most others…even the Shu)

Next to sunscreen, RMS Beauty Living Luminizer is one of those products we’d take to a desert island. This is the highlighter that Victoria’s Secret models use! The gorgeous woman behind this brand, Rose-Marie Swift, uses this often on Gisele and Miranda. It puts most other highlighters to shame. Try this yourself, then pay it forward to The Eco Girl on your list.

We are obsessing over the One Love Organics Comfort and Joy set (exclusive to Birchbox). Does it get better than a duo of body serums made with organic plant oils in Lavender and Neroli scents? We first fell in love with One Love after President Suzanne LeRoux kindly introduced us to the line last year. The Skin Savior Balm had us hooked from day one and now we can’t get enough of the line. This set is the perfect way to share the (one) love.

Going sulfate free was a game changer for my hair and one of my favorite new discoveries is Acure Organics Morocccan Argan Oil + Argan Stem Cell Shampoo and Conditioner, made for gifting with this Acure Organics Healthy Hair Gift Set. It is one of the best smells I’ve ever encountered and it totally revitalizes hair. The Eco Girl will appreciate this duo and the fact that brand, founded by Kristy Guerra as a way to honor her grandmother who battled breast cancer, donates proceeds of each product sold to breast cancer research. This line is literally for a cure.

Ilia Beauty founder Sasha Plavsic is on a mission to change your mind about organic makeup. A designer by trade, she founded the line after evaluating her makeup bag one day and decided organic beauty could use a rebrand of its own — better packaging, performance and contemporary colors. We say success has been achieved because Ilia Beauty Lipstick is phenomenal. The colors are wearable and fresh, the formula good for you (and performs better than most non-natural offerings) and the packaging streamlined. Introduce The Eco Girl to a tube of Ilia and a happy holiday it will be.

On Gaining Perspective and One Love Organics Chia Whip

We’ve been a little quiet on our ends this past week, but our hearts have been heavy thinking of all of our friends and others on the East Coast. Our life stresses and busy schedules seem trivial in comparison to the tragedies we’ve been seeing others experience after Sandy stormed through. Our hearts truly go out to all, and we hope all of our readers and their families are in a good place. We know we’re counting our blessings.

A few weeks ago, I made a skincare discovery that has given me a new perspective on the most routine of tasks; washing my face. I picked up One Love Organics Chia Whip from the Birchbox shop, mainly because I love everything this brand puts out. That remains fact and this face wash is the best foaming face wash ever. The pure organic plant oils of chia, olive, jojoba and coconut make this superior in every way. Bold statement considering I love me so foam, but so many times the formulas disappear quickly and don’t remove makeup.  Right?  Because I use a cleansing oil to start, this isn’t necessarily a deal breaker. I love my rituals, and spend a good chunk of time each day cleansing and moisturizing.

Well, OLO’s Chia Whip has made me blissfully lazy. A swipe of eye makeup remover on the eyes and a nice massage with Chia Whip and this girl is done. All traces of makeup gone. No fragrance or other unnatural nonsense to worry about. $28, One Love Organics.

Product Girl Green Guide: Eco-Friendly Skin Care

With Earth Day right around the corner, Sunday, April 22, now seems like the natural time to share our top picks in eco beauty. All week long, we’ll be sharing our green recommendations in makeup, shower staples, skin care and more. Today, we’re sharing the eco-friendly skin care products we can’t be without. Read on for lots of plant extracts, oils and the most brilliant multitasking balms and creams.

1. Acure Facial Cleansing Crème, Olive + Mint. This creamy cleanser helps encourage new cell growth and actually helps you look younger. Literally, with each use, you are washing away worry lines! Organic acai berry, fair trade organic olive oil and Organic Chorella Growth Factor (to boost collagen…a.k.a. younger-looking skin!) are the star players. The cleanser is a fresh minty green color, and the smell is naturally sweet. ($14.99, Acure Organics)

2. SIA Botanics Blueberry Oxygenating Exfoliator. This brand recently popped up on our radar. All of SIA’s products are grounded in botanical bases and do wonders for damaged skin, blemish-prone, dull, dry, YOU NAME IT! The oxygenating action comes from jojoba beads which exfoliate the skin so gently you hardly know it’s happening. Blueberries and cranberries offer a surge of antioxidant power and olive and hibiscus are on standby to decongest pores. ($20, SiaBotanics)

3. La Fresh Waterproof Makeup Remover Wipes. La Fresh has a wipe for everything (and everyone!) — nail polish remover, insect repellant, body refresher, deodorant, puppy dogs, etc. We love the Makeup Remover Wipes and how they easily break down stubborn eye and lip makeup. They contain zero alcohol and no artificial fragrance or parabens. Look for a six oil blend of olive, jojoba, sesame, grapeseed, vitamin E and lavender. The lavender scent is very soothing at the end of a long day. True story.  ($9.99 for 24, La Fresh)

4. Weleda Skin Food. One of the best skin care products, ever. It can be used on dry hands, elbows and even your face. I even use it as a highlighter on my face as it gives a believable, natural dewy look to the skin. Organic pansy extract, known to be a mild antiseptic, calms irritation and essential fatty acids, vitamin E and organic sunflower seed oil heal the skin as well. It’s like a garden. It’s also super affordable and lasts a very long time. ($11.50, Weleda)

5. TAY All-Purpose Shea Butter. We live for a good shea cream. And Tay’s is about as pure as it gets. Organically harvested shea butter, from the Women’s Coop in West Africa, is infused with USDA Organic rosemary essential oil to create a truly aromatherapeutic cream. The scent is earthy and the benefits plentiful: hydrates skin and scalp, doubles as a hair styling aid and works wonders on ragged cuticles. The engraved wood packaging is also so unique. We love this! ($28, TAY Everyday)

6. One Love Organics Skin Savior Balm. Balms are a gift to the skin, and to those who never have enough time in the day. Pure, cold-pressed plant oils do the job of cleansing your skin and moisturizing it. The old oil breaks down oil story – it’s legit and this stuff works! Skin Savior is a precious organic blend of coconut oil, sweet soy seed oil, beeswax, mango seed butter, chia seed extract and more. We love to use this on our face, but also massage this in to the skin – anywhere head-to-toe – for an extra dose of pampering. ($68, One Love Organics)

7. Stark Skincare Green Tea Detox Clay Mask. By now, we’re all familiar with the “just add water” exfoliator, right? A brilliant idea that Stark takes one step further with a “just add water” mask. It’s a gentle, but powerful, blend of clay, green tea and fruit extracts that leaves skin brighter and cleaner after just one use. Green tea helps repair damage done by the sun and pollution and the mineral-rich clays remove impurities from the pores and improve skin’s clarity. The apple extract contains alpha hydroxy acid to gently exfoliate and improve skin elasticity. All of this in a POWDER! ($30, Stark Skincare)

What's the Story with One Love Organics Morning Glory?

Five days each week, an alarm clock ensures I wake up bright and early — whether I want to be or not. And after we get through with that never fun part of the day, One Love Organics Morning Glory Serum wakes my complexion up. You could say it’s the highlight of my morning. While this delicious serum works any time of day, the ingredients are truly made to wake up your skin and draw out your natural radiance. Whenever I use this, I feel ready to conquer the day. It sinks into the skin very quickly, making it very easy to follow-up with moisturizer and sunscreen.

Let’s break Morning Glory down. Very few ingredients, all with a very focused job description. First, Organic Wild Raspberry Leaf, which is a natural source of polypeptides, tannins and niacin that work stimulate, tighten and tone the skin. Peppermint and lemon balm deliver a zing of anti-inflammatory antioxidants to de-puff and brighten the skin. From there, we have essential oils of ylang ylang and vegan-sourced Omega 3 fatty acids to help smooth the appearance of fine lines.

Kind of phenomenal, right? It’s like a secret weapon, but way too good of a secret to keep to myself. You can find it at One Love Organics for $48.

What's in Her Makeup Bag with One Love Organics President Suzanne LeRoux

From the moment One Love Organics landed on our radar, we wanted to know more about the products and the story behind the brand. It’s clear that every product is crafted with serious attention to detail and a true passion for healthy ingredients. Indeed, One Love Organics President Suzanne LeRoux is a true believer in alternative healing. While a full-time lawyer, she studied holistic nutrition and aromatherapy, and from that, One Love was born. She’s now dedicated to One Love Organics full-time, using her lawyerly analysis and high standards for efficacy to truly uncover what’s beneficial to skin, health and beauty.

Suzanne let us take a look into her makeup bag — the By Elizabeth Dehn Makeup Clutch and gave us some insight into her must-have beauty products. Let’s take a closer look!

1. Primitive LipGloss in Red Rio.

2. Primitive Lipstick in Taj Mahal: Leaves behind a faint golden shimmer. Love!

3. skinnyskinny Black Pepper Rose Dry Shampoo: I love dry shampoo. Reducing the number of times I wash my hair per week has made a huge difference in the health of my hair.

4. Face Spray by Elizabeth Dehn: I am all about the sensorial experience and I use this spray frequently during the day to reenergize, refresh and refocus. It is a burst of cool spray that smells fantastic and whenever I find myself waning, I spray myself!

5. One Love Organics New Best Friend Skin Shammy: I use the skin shammy from morning until night. If I am running late in the morning, I will wet the shammy and use it alone to cleanse and re-freshen my face. I then take one to keep oil at bay during the day and keep my complexion looking matte and smooth. At night, it removes all traces of eye-makeup, dirt and oil.

6. One Love Organics Skin Savior Waterless Multi-Balm. I use this to make a super light treatment foundation with minerals that I blend myself. I also use it to smooth my hair or apply it after the shower to my body for moisture.

7. A Design Pointed Foundation Brush: This is the best brush I have found for applying the treatment foundation properly.

8. Emi Jay Hair Ties: My hair is pretty much always up. These ties help protect my hair, look so cute and I love supporting two teens who have a knack for business and support giving through their company.

9. Mbeze Natural Deodorette in Sweet Sanura.

10. Vapour Organic Beauty Mesmerize Eyeliner

11. Exude Lipstick in Nude.

12. I blend my own minerals.

A Brand New Year + One Love Organics Brand New Day Microderma Scrub & Masque

Happy New Year, beautifuls!

We started off this brand new year in the best way we know how: some DIY spa-ing at home. The product du jour? One Love Organics Brand New Day Microderma Scrub & Masque. We’re not really the New Year’s resolution type, but one we try to stick to every year is taking good care of our skin. Regular exfoliation, hydration and always removing our makeup at night. No matter how tired we are or how many drinks we’ve had.

One Love Organic’s Brand New Day is a dry blend of silk peptide, milk powder and fresh pineapple enzymes. The premise is simple: just add water and let the mixture polish off dead skin cells, on your face and your body. It can be used as an exfoliating scrub or as a masque. To step up the DIY-spa fun, you can also mix the scrub with other One Love Organics products (the Skin Savior Balm that we heart so much or the Foaming Cleansing) to create more of a paste. You can also create a masque with it by adding full fat greek yogurt and/or honey. The greek yogurt performs like an astringent mask and the honey, a nautral humectant, adds moisture.

Brand New Day is gentle enough to be used every day, and it is a nice way to start fresh in the morning.  I will say that the smell/taste of the product isn’t the best – akin to that of baking soda – but it is a sacrifice worth making for how it makes your skin feel and look.

A few additional things to know about this product:

- The packaging is tough to get open. I had to use a knife (and enlist the man of the house for assistance).

- Be generous with the powder. When using water (which is what I do most), I find that I get the best results using a small amount and creating a thicker paste. I then spread it on my face and let it sit for two minutes before rinsing. The enzymes do the work for you, so don’t scrub too hard.

- There are no rules. You can a lot of this or a little. Find whatever consistency works best and your preferred medium.

Brand New Day is available on OneLoveOrganics.com for $39. It’s also available in this adorable travel essentials kit, which is in my opinion, a GREAT way to test the line. We’ve been very impressed with every product we’ve tried in the line, and think it’s worth trying!

Beauty VIP of the Week: One Love Organics Skin Savior Balm Will Have You Saying AMEN!

When a single product description includes, “hair tamer, illuminizer, make up remover, moisturizer, primer and skin soother,” among its uses, that is music to my ears. And when said product lives up to its expectations, that’s akin to a religious experience.

I can attribute this “hallelujah” to One Love Organics Skin Savior Waterless Beauty Balm, or for short, my Skin Savior. One Love Organics is a natural cosmetics company, which sources only the highest grade of raw materials. Their commitment to natural and organic is evident in their entire line. Skin Savior is comprised of pure, cold-pressed plant oils, vitamin E, vanilla extract and chia extract, and can be used for pretty much anything and on pretty much anyone.

As a makeup remover, it breaks down dirt and clears out your pores without stripping your skin. The key to using it that way, however, is most definitely in the shammy…One Love Organics Your Best Friend Skin Shammy, that is. It’s not just a microfiber cloth, but the perfect companion to the Skin Savior AND good for up to 200 washes. As a moisturizer, it is a healthy beverage for your skin. It smells so fresh (thanks to the orange peel wax) and feels even better. Use it over or under makeup, or both, as I like to do. A dab on the cheekbones over makeup and you will see how it acts as an illuminizer. L-o-v-e.

Skin Savior Balm meets Bobbi Brown Skin Mineral Foundation

I saved the best for last….Skin Savior as a medium to mix with mineral makeup. One Love Organics has product tutorials on its website, and one is all about mixing Skin Savior with mineral powder to create a cream foundation. I tried it myself and the results were CRAZY good. You can build the color up to the intensity desired (more powder = more coverage) and it just sort of becomes your skin.

Skin Savior Balm + Bobbi Brown Skin

See what I mean? This is a freshly mixed blend on the back of my hand.  It’s really easy, and while it took me a little more time than the normal, it was worth the extra effort. And that, my friends, is why Skin Savior is this week’s Beauty VIP. AMEN.

Check it out at One Love Organics.
