Hey look, it’s MAC Hey, Sailor! There are always a few cues of summertime, and MAC’s summer color collection is always one. In recent years, Surf Baby and To The Beach, and Naughty Nauticals and Cool Heat a few more back. I always feel like my summer memories are tied to the makeup in these collections. And can we all remember the mad search for Marine Life?
Of all of those collections, a few items always stood out. In MAC Hey, Sailor, there are so many standouts. First, the packaging. The navy and white nautical stripes are irresistible. I’m tempted to even keep the boxes, but am doing my best to avoid hoarder behavior. I’ve already identified some total must-haves – namely the Pro Longwear Bronzing Powder (silky! smooth! gorgeousness!) and the tangerine Riviera Life Lipglass (no need to shell the $ for Chanel’s version!)
But, let’s take a closer look at the collection (note: this is only part of it —there’s a whopping 40 items in Hey, Sailor).
MAC Spice Lip Pencil was the first product I’d ever used from the brand. It was a gift from my sister-in-law, who raved about how it was the best lipliner she’d ever used. Today, Spice remains a MAC best selller. In fact, it’s the #1 selling lip pencil in more than 20 countries. For my skin tone, it reeks of the 90s and brown lips, but twas the times. But being a best seller this long means something, which is why MAC immortalized Spice, and seven other global best sellers in its Fashion Sets Collection. On counters through June, find the world’s favorite MAC colors in special sets of coordinated Lipstick, Lipglass and Nail Polish.
Chances are you’ve used these iconic MAC colors. Russian Red, Girl About Town, Snob , Myth, Chestnut and Rebel. Myth Lipstick was the nude for us for years and Russian Red remains the red of all reds. And now they’re both available in lipglass and nail polish form — ohmigosh, YES!
I’m kind of giddy over Girl About Town and its fabulous fuchsia-ness in a Lipglass and Nail Polish at the moment. Girl About Town Lipstick is all sorts of awesome, and that translates to its newest products perfectly. Matching lip and nail color has never felt as right as it does with a MAC Fashion Set. These have been on counters for a few weeks now. Did you snag a set? Take a trip down MAC memory lane? Let us know!
The MAC Reel Sexy collection has some amazing lip colors. The namesake lipstick to start and now the Cremesheen Glass in Star Quality. It’s a punchy pink. How can I resist? The Cremesheen Glasses have a stellar formula — moisturizing and not the least bit sticky. I usually associate the Cremesheens with netural, sheer colors so Star Quality is an awesome surprise. It’s bright and springy. And, it was the perfect sidekick to my fishtail braid. I finally learned how! It’s actually really easy (although bring your patience). I learned on Pinterest.
L-R: Private Screening, Cinestyle, Star Quality, Colour Saturation
Star Quality is one of four Cremesheens available in the Reel Sexy Collection, joining the pinky nude Private Screening, pale lavender Cinestyle and grape Colour Saturation. Available now, $19.50 each.
While I was painting my nails with MAC Vivid Effect from the Reel Sexy collection, two deep thoughts popped into my head. One, this color reminds me of one of my Essie favs from last summer: Too, Too Hot; two, I could go for a big bowl of strawberries. Obviously, summer is on the brain. Too bad the weather isn’t there just yet. I think the Vivid Effect polish vividly paints a picture of summer. Some reds are deep and moody. Not Vivid Effect. It’s a red that screams summer — days at the beach, fresh strawberries, bike rides and sweating our butts off. Because, really, that’s what really happens in the summertime. Can that just get here already?! We’re ready for it. At least our nails are.
MAC’s spring collections, three in total that launched April 5, are kind of awesome. Reel Sexy and its bright colors are speaking to us. Especially the namesake item of the collection, Reel Sexy Lipstick. It’s a light bright coral in an amplified finish. Light bright may seem like an oxymoron, but it’s right on. Reel Sexy is a subdued coral, almost peach that straddles the line between bright and light peferctly. Not one to shy away from bright during the daytime, no, but with this I feel like I’m getting the best of both worlds.
Reel Sexy is sold out online at MAC, so if this color strikes your fancy, run don’t walk to your nearest counter.
Blush is one of my biggest beauty vices. Impossible to use all at the rate I seem to accumulate, but I like options and COLOR. A look is not complete without a touch of blush. Even if I’m going for the “no-makeup” look, some type of blush/bronzer needs to be happening. MAC is clearly well aware of our community of blush lovers with the launch of the Très Cheek collection this month.
“Everyone loves when you blush. Fashioning your choices: A new sextet of MAC blush powders. Go hip in bright red-orange, or add a glorious touch of peach, pink or lavender – each shade staying as bright and un-beige on the skin as it is in the palette. With a formula that’s seamlessly sheer and unabashedly buildable, what do you get? A look that says Très Cheek.”
There are six shades to tug at your blush-loving heart strings:
Pink Tea: Neutral beige pink (Satin)
Lovecloud: Bright mid-tone pink (Satin)
Peony Petal: Bright blue pink (Satin)
Modern Mandarin: Red-orange (Satin)
Immortal Flower: Bright peach (Satin)
Full of Joy: Lavender (Frost)
Must-haves for me would be Modern Mandarin — reminds me of NARS Taj Majal a bit! — and Lovecloud. The latter is a subtly bright pink with a hint of peach (at least to my eye!)
The “Tres Cheek” blushes are $20 and available officially April 5 (but are online now). Anything catching your eye (or cheek)?
Have you heard? Lipstick is having a moment. Particularly the brights. This awesome piece in the Wall Street Journal by Elizabeth Holmes (@EHolmesWSJ), “Very Bright Lipstick, All the Time,” confirms my longing and NEED to rock the bold lip. Except I’m not tied to just one shade. People, there is a bright lip movement happening, and you need to join in.
I had at-length conversations with friends and coworkers this week about the mood-lifting, confidence-creating side effects of wearing a bright lipstick. Particularly on a warm sunny day when all you want to do is smile and be happy. We say leave the fear behind and dip your toes in the bright lip water. Pretty soon, you’ll be swimming in coral and pink.
For this reaason, bright lipstick was the Beauty Vip of the week. But I couldn’t pick just one.
NARS Mexican Rose Velvet Gloss Pencil. I deem this color universally flattering. I also found it particularly impressive that it lasted for 12 hours (with only lip balm applied a few times throughout the day). And, I had chicken wings for dinner.
MAC Sheen Supreme Lipstick in Full Speed. Quickly becoming my go-to “coral” because it has a salmon pink undertone that I find super flattering. Buy this. Then wear it, a lot. And please report back.
MAC Viva Glam Nicki Minaj. This is bright, and badass. Sure to shock everyone you see, in a good way. Also, please ignore “the face” I seem to be giving in this pic.
Where do you stand on the bright lip? All day, every day? Sometimes? Or never? Let’s talk about it!
MAC Mineralize continues to expand, with the release of Perfectly Finished. The two front-runners in the collection are MAC Mineralize Foundation/Loose ($30) and Mineralize Concealer ($19). They’re a great pair, actually. The Mineralize Concealer is easy to blend and fairly moisturizing, so it works well anywhere on the face. If I’m going light on the face, I use concealer around the nose to cover redness, under eyes and follow-up with a dusting of powder. These products work together well in that regard.
But I’ve got to give it you straight. One thing working against Mineralize Concealer is that it’s not MAC Pro Longwear Concealer. For me, that concealer is the queen of all concealers. Mineralize is like a first cousin in consistency, but a distant relative in wear time to Pro Long Wear. I give Mineralize a few points in packaging, though. The brush is a really nice touch.
Perfectly Finished is on counters and at MAC stores now. If you’re a fan of the Mineralize line, chances are these items will grab your attention.
MAC Pearglide Intense Eyeliners are quite possibly the longest wearing eyeliners ever. They’re also sparkly, vibrant and, most importantly, BACK! MAC Vera introduces seven Pearlglides, including Undercurrent which is the green of ALL greens. A golden teal, need I say more? At $15, I think these eyeliners are a best bet. They are super soft and creamy, apply with ease and are just shy of practically PERMANENT. A word of advice…be careful with the sparkle and avoid the waterline. And pick up Undercurrent. You will be so happy you did.
The Pearglide Intense Eyeliners available as part of MAC Vera include:
I went for “spring” this week with MAC Play Day from the MAC Vera collection, inspired by the art of textile designer Vera Neumann. It’s a creamy pinky peach color that is going to be so popular this season in everything —- lip color, nails and denim! Don’t you just love it? This color is amazing, but it took three coats to get this and I still see pockets of sheerness. I wish it were just a smidge more opaque, but the color is just too good not to wear it this week. I think it would make for a lovely pedicure, too.
What are you wearing on your nails this week? Feeling spring-y?
