Sun Safety Splurge or Steal: Kiehl's vs Neutrogena

I was nearly set to post about Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ when I picked up a tube of Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Liquid Sunblock. We’re definitely in splurge or steal territory here! They are shockingly similar in ingredients and performance.  Had I discovered the Neutrogena first, I may not have splurged on the Kiehl’s.  But I do love them both — they are serious sun safety rock stars!

First, the ingredient breakdown. They contain the same active ingredients at nearly the same percentages.

Both formulas are incredibly lightweight and need to be shaken prior to use to activate the ingredients. Unless you are sensitive to physical suscreen, these will not break you out or clog your pores. Both are intended to be worn under your makeup and over your moisturizer. Arguably, you could use this as your moisturizer in a pinch. Both formulas absorb almost immediately. I love the liquidity – just don’t forget to shake!

Now for the ever so slight differences. I noticed a slightly different scent. Both are fragrance free but have a slight sunscreen smell that disappears immediately after application. They have a slightly different finish on the skin to the touch – the Kiehl’s has more of a silky feel. I think that the Neutrogena has better priming abilities as it controlled oil longer on my face. Neutrogena is also available in higher SPF – 55 and 70. And last, the price difference. Kiehl’s is $32 for 1.7 FL oz and Neutrogena’s is $10.79 for 1.4 FL oz.

Whether you opt to spurge or steal, make sure you wear sunscreen!

Our Mother's Day Gift Picks

Have you finished your Mother’s Day shopping yet? I am a last minute shopper…unfortunately. I tell myself every year that I will not wait until a few days before to get my mother a gift but it always turns out the same. And it’s the same for practically everything else in my life. I’m a last minute gal. Since I’m still browsing for my mama’s gift, we thought we would show you some of our picks for Mother’s Day.

Philosophy Field of Flowers Set – $35 – My mom is a Philosophy gal. Every time I visit, I find something new in the house from Philosophy. I swear, she has practically every Amazing Grace product ever made, not that I mind the Amazing Grace hand soap and air freshener in the guest bathroom. Although I think it may be time to introduce her to a new scent from Philosophy, one that will be great for spring and summer. This set was created exclusively for Mother’s Day and it includes an 8oz. body lotion and a 2oz. spray fragrance. Field of Flowers is so fresh and airy that you’ll love smelling this on mom.

Stila Mother’s Day Gift Set – $38 – I like this set so much that I want it for myself but my skin needs a little more than a tinted moisturizer. My mom’s skin, on the other hand, does not. Her skin is gorgeous and she barely wears any makeup. This set could be my way of coaxing her into wearing a little more. This set includes a 1oz. Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer, a Lip Glaze in Mayberry (a shade my mom would definitely approve of), an Eye Shadow Trio in Anya (soft peach shimmer/ soft brown/ deep purple shimmer) and a sample of Stila’s new One Step PrimeColor in Per Suede (dusty rose)… I might have to keep that for myself.

Jurlique Roses Gift Set – $45 – My mom likes to store hand cream all over the place and I don’t blame her, a gal’s got to keep her hands soft but I have to admit, I’m not a fan of the ones she has chosen. This is a great time to introduce her to one of my favorite hand creams ever. You know Jurlique makes on of the best hand creams around, right? This set comes with a Rose Hand Cream and Love Balm, a product I’ve always been curious about. Maybe she won’t mind me trying it when I come over to visit. 😉

Bobbi Brown Antigua Face Palette – $55 – This Bloomingdale’s exclusive palette would be perfect for any gal, not just mom. For the most part, the women in my family are not big fans of bronzers but this palette’s Illuminating Bronzer would be perfect way to start. The shades in this palette include Navajo Eye Shadow, Oat Eye Shadow, Caviar Eye Shadow, Antigua Illuminating Bronzer, Kitten Creamy Lip Color, Pink Ballet Creamy Lip Color and Azalea Metallic Lip Color. I think I’m starting to develop feelings for this Antigua Illuminating Bronzer…

Suki Mother’s Day Collection – $60 – If your mom is looking for a more eco-friendly option for her skincare routine, you need to introduce her to Suki, the line is amazing. I’m partial to her Lemongrass Cleanser. The Mother’s Day Collection combines her skincare with her makeup. It includes her Moisture-rich Cleansing Lotion, Concentrated Nourishing Toner, Bio-C 10% Formula Face Serum, Facial Lift Ultimate Firming Cream, Velvet Moisturizing Cream and a Luscious Lips Berry Cream Trio all in an 100% organic cotton sateen white zip case.

Kiehl’s Discovery Treatments – $98 – I’ve been experimenting with a Kiehl’s regimen lately and one of my new favorite products is the Midnight Recovery Concentrate. I think my mom needs to get involved with it too and this is the perfect Mother’s Day set for her too. She loves lavender a little too much so the Midnight Recovery Concentrate and the Lavenday Body Scrub are right up her alley. This set also includes the Powerful Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate and a sample of their Micro-Dermabrasion cream.

Flavor of the Month: Cranberry

Our flavor of the month for December is cranberry… it’s always appropriate around the holidays, right? Here’s what we have been enjoying this month.

  • MAC Cranberry Eyeshadow – this eyeshadow is old school MAC at its finest. This is one of MAC’s oldest shades (it is the one in the middle seen above in my old palette) they have and it is just simply gorgeous. It is a red plum shade with a pink shimmer. I love this packed on lower lid and blended out towards the crease… so pretty!
  • MyChelle White Cranberry Cleanser – I picked up a MyChelle sampler box awhile back and this cleanser was one of the products I ended up picking up out of the samples I tried. This cleanser from the all natural line is not harsh on my skin even though it has glycolic, azelaic and salicylic acids in it.
  • Glade Fragrance Collection Pomegranate & Cranberry Candle – I’ve been burning these candles all month long and it put me in the festive spirit! The candle burns evenly and the scent fills the room without being overwhelming. Plus it is a bargain! I received a sample and wanted to keep it going all month long so it has been easy on my wallet. It is available in a reed diffuser as well.
  • Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 in Cranberry – we stockpile this lip balm in the winter and cranberry is in regular rotation! It’s got a light scent, not too overpowering and works like a charm. Seriously, this lip balm creates a barrier between your lips and the wind, cold and other weather harshness. It absorbs slowly into your lips and makes them soft. And even though the balm consistency isn’t sticky, it’s very long-lasting. Laurie’s threshold is if it survives her morning commute…and it does!
  • The Body Shop Merry Cranberry Frosted Shimmer Lotion – this lotion is such a delight! If you’re not careful, shimmery lotions can either give that  tin-man effect or transfer to clothes. But not this stuff. It’s got a silvery sheen to it that translates as a glow on your skin. The smell is very festive and wintery, like a subtle candied cranberry. We’re all for brightening up our skin in the winter!

Winter Beauty Survival

Winter is here. There’s just no getting around it anymore. Chicago is getting hit with its first real storm of the season. Temperatures will sink to single digits and I think during my morning commute it’s going to feel like -20 degrees. This is the cold that makes you feel like your face is going to fall off. And I take the bus into work, so I spend about 15 minutes of morning commute (and the same in the evening) walking to/from the bus. Days like this require a special beauty routine.

Here’s how I attempt to keep my skin protected and my face pretty.

Moisturizer: Days like these are just not the time to be skimping on the face moisturizer. Give your skin a healthy layer of lotion and really let it sink into your skin before doing your makeup. I also use a face primer after I apply my moisturizer because I like to give my skin a little extra protection. I take the words “wind” and “advisory” very seriously when I hear them used together. I’ve really been liking NARS Primer with SPF for winter days. Which brings me to my next point…

Sunscreen: It’s a myth that you need visible, yellow sun to get sun damage. I got one of the worst sunburns on my nose ever from snow! In fact, a combo of sunny sun and bright white snow is horrible. I don’t skimp on this either.

Pick Your Battles: You can’t have it all on these days. What looks great when you leave your house will soon be demolished by the torrential wind. My eyes water a lot and the wind just gets the tears flowing. So I do eyeliner only on the upper lid (if I do it at all) – and I choose wisely. A MAC fluidline or Bobbi Brown gel liner does the trick for me. And waterproof mascara. I don’t use this often because it’s so hard to get off, but it’s a must. I’ve been LOVING the NARS Larger than Life Volumizing mascara lately.

Rosy Cheeks: Duh, your going to have them anyway. May as well play up your natural beauty. Cream blushes are my winter savior. I like them all year long, but they are doubly amazing this time of year. I like Stila’s Convertible Color and I LOVE Bobbi Brown Pot Rouges – Velvet Plum is my favorite for a rosy flush.

Lips – I stash Rosebud Salve, Kiehl’s #1 Lip Balm, Carmex Moisture Plus – basically all of these and more into every purse, coat pocket and office drawer so that I’m never without.

So that is what works for me. What works for you? And isn’t so difficult to adjust to winter at first? I’ll be good in 2-3 weeks, but right now I’m not ready!

DISCLOSURE: All of the products mentioned in this article were purchased by me recently or during previous winters of my life.

Kiehl's Friends and Family Sale

Every Thanksgiving, my mom, sisters and me plot out our shopping “plan of attack” for Black Friday. Next to turkey, stuffing and pie – this is my favorite part of Thanksgiving.  And this year is going to be a complex plan – there’s a whole lot of sale action going on!

On my list for sure? Kiehl’s! They’re offering a fantastic 20% off at their Friends and Family sale which begins on Black Friday and goes through December 1. This offer is valid at their freestanding stores and online at with the code FAMILY. I’m eyeing up the Creme de Corps gift set for my sister in-law and the Imperial Balm for me. That stuff is LOVE. Neal at the Chicago store made me a sample and I’m obsessed now.

Happy shopping to you all!

New! Kiehl's Scented Lip Balms & Portable Essence Oils

Speaking of Kiehl’s, they recently released some new scents for their lip balms and more recently, relaunched their classic essence oils in a new portable format with a rollerball applicator.

These new Portable Essence Oils are available in Musk 1921, Coriander 1946, Vanilla 1968 and Grapefruit 1976, with each date corresponds to the year the scent was formulated. You can mix these oils together or wear them individually. The good news is 6 more scents will be introduced in the coming months. Each oil is $25 and they are available in stores and online now.

If you’re a lip balm connoisseur, you already know Kiehl’s makes an amazing lip balm. If not, now you do! 🙂 Kiehl’s Scented Lip Balm #1 now has new scents. The new scents of Coconut, Mango and Vanilla join the existing scents of Cranberry Mint and Pear. As a gal that can never have enough lip balms, I think this one is a classic. I buy the cheap ones, I buy the mid-range ones and I buy the expensive ones but in the end, I always come back to this one. Pear is my personal favorite. You can also find this available in stores and online now.

New! Kiehl's Highly Efficient Skin-Tone Corrector

Kiehl’s has recently introduced their new Highly Efficient Skin-Tone Corrector. This new product is meant to correct sun and age spots with the help of the emblica fruit extract.

Kiehl’s Highly Efficient Skin-Tone Corrector is a lightweight gel so you can use it as a daily treatment to also help correct uneven skin-tone and fade post-acne scarring. I’m adding this to my shopping list, I have some acne-scarring from all my hormonal acne issues and at this point, I’m willing to give anything a try.

Have you used this product? What do you think?

New Kiehl's Fragrance: Forest Rain

If you love Kiehl’s fragrances, you’re in for a treat. They are now introducing a new fragrance to their lineup: Forest Rain.

Kiehl’s new Forest Rain Eau de Toilette is a new unisex scent with spicy and woodsy tones to it. It features top notes of wet grass, muguet petals, citrus and guaic leaves, middle notes of damp moss, jasmine and white flowers thena dry down of sunbleached hay, cedarwood, vetiver and soft musk.

You can also find this new fragrance in Kiehl’s Bath and Shower Liquid Body Cleanser and their Hand and Body Lotion. When you layer each product on top of one another, the scent lasts you all day long. From time to time I layer their musk shower gel with the body lotion and love the lasting power of the scent when I use it this way. Remember, layering = lasting power! 🙂

I think a trip to Kiehl’s is now in order to check out this scent!
