I always love Reese on the red carpet. Somehow, she always makes me want to get bangs. Her makeup at the “This Means’ War” premiere was done by Avon. Love the subtle cat eye courtesy of Avon’s Glimmersticks and True Color Smokey Eyes Quad.

New Year, New Face Wash: Kiehl's Ultra Facial Oil Free Cleanser

There are certain products worthy of a splurge, and others that you try to save your hard earned cash on. Right? Feels like a universal mentality, though, everyone’s priorities vary.  I’ve always thought that face wash is one product that you can save on. There are a ton of great budget buys out there — Aveeno and Cetaphil to name a few. It’s also the product I seem to get the most questions on from people. “What face wash should I use? I don’t want to pay a lot, but what I’m using now is [insert problem].” The problems are usually not removing my makeup, leaving behind residue and, most often, drying out my skin. And these issues are not unique to price point.

To answer the question that seems to be on everyone’s mind, I’ve found a fantastic cleanser that might just be the best value ev-er.  Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Cleanser, at $18 for 5 oz., is like a bottomless pit. It’s a tiny miracle, I’m certain. It’s not the least expensive cleanser out there, nor is it anywhere near a luxury price tag

The tiniest drop manages to give my face a majorly thorough wash. And when I say tiny, I mean less than a pea-sized drop. It’s gentle and foamy – just how I like it. It’s oil-free, but not drying. It foams but the formula is sulfate-free. No fragrance or dyes to worry about either. A few noteworthy ingredients are Imperata Cylindrica Root and Lemon Fruit Extracts. The former helps the skin absorb moisture, while the latter is a natural astringent. Considering I purchased this at the end of summer and have barely made a dent in the bottle after nearly daily use is a wonder. To quantify it, maybe I’ve used .88 cents worth of face wash. Maybe.

OH…and if you’re a Clarisonic user, as I am, this works really well. You have to be careful to use a small amount or a foam party may overwhelm you.

So for those asking which face wash to buy, this is what I will tell you!  And, if you’re looking for more of a comprehensive system, Kiehl’s packaged up both Ultra kits into a handy three-stepper. The cleanser in the oil-free kit is only 1 oz., but I’d guesstimate more than a month of usage, easily!

Product Girl's Top 11 of 2011

Narrowing down the best beauty releases of the year can be a daunting task. But when it comes down to choosing the best of the best, all we really had to do was look in our makeup bags and on our bathroom counters. From there, it was pretty clear what products we can’t live without and will happily  carry into the New Year. Without further ado, we present to you the Product Girl Top 11 of 2011.

While this list is officially in no particularly order, NARS Velvet Gloss Pencil is definitely our favorite lip product of the year. We can’t get enough of these. Frivolous and New Lover are my top two, but the deep raspberry of Baroque is a close third. We absolutely love how these look and feel on the lips – the subtle gloss, burst of color and moisturizing properties make them a major winner.

We purchased countless tubes of Burts’s Bees Tinted Lip Balms this year. For ourselves and for others. The Rose is the perfect tint of sheer red, and Honeysuckle is a lovely peachy nude. The formula is 100% natural and the price, at $7, is just right. These are a standout drugstore buy of 2011.

We continue to be mesmerized by this seafoam green tub of youth! Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica is such an  interesting moisturizier. It’s thick in texture, very balm-like, but doesn’t feel like it on the skin, and seems to instantly make our skin look brighter and healthier. Plus, we love the way Rosa Arctica looks on our bathroom counter!

Thank you, Dr. Dennis Gross, for reviving our pale skin and helping me fight my Vitamin D deficiency with the Alpha Beta Glow Pads. Since these launched in February, they’ve been a constant in my beauty routine. I don’t let actual sun rays get near my face, so these were a godsend. Unlike self-tanner, these are skin care. They give you a legit bronze and unleash anti-aging + exfoliating properties into your skin.

Perhaps the most difficult category for us to choose the “best of” was nail polish. But, Chanel Black Pearl managed to take home the honors. This gunmetal green is like an edgy accessory that goes with everything. It looked good no matter the season, and on fingers or toes.

Benefit Cha Cha Tint was worth waiting until 2011 for. It is a delicious mango-colored stain that looks intimidating in the bottle but is like magic on the skin. If you think you can’t wear coral, Cha Cha Tint can prove you wrong. Plus, it’s a stain so it lasts forever.

Another cheek product that dominated our makeup bags the majority of 2011 was Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush. We can’t pick just one favorite, so consider ALL of them the best of 2011. (Although, we might be partial to Amused and Tipsy!) They are the longest wearing powder blush you’ll ever use and the color stays vibrant all day. And the colors are phenomenal and importantly, flattering on the skin.

2011 will go down as the year the U.S. got a taste of the BB Cream. And we couldn’t be more smitten with Boscia’s B.B. Cream SPF 27 PA++, a skin perfecting “blemish balm” that is like a super-powered tinted moisturizer. It manages to blur out imperfections and moisturize our skin. In the summer, we could get away with using this for coverage, moisture and SPF!

A serum that actually helps repair and heal damaged hair and split ends? Yes, it exists.  The exotic oils and silk peptides in Phyto Phytokératine Serum  helps strengthen strands and restore moisture to dry hair (and is silicone-free). I truly believe that by slathering the ends of my hair in this, I can go a lot longer without a trim.

The central weapon in our fight against aging is sunscreen. It may not be the most exciting part of our beauty routine, but it’s very necessary. Skinceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense is the best facial SPF we’ve ever used. We like that it contains only physical blockers and a special extract that increases skin defenses and resistance to UV and heat stress. But the best part? It feels weightless on the skin.

Each month, we looked forward to the arrival of the pink Birchbox! What a treat – which is why this beauty delivery service deserves a spot in our best of 2011 list. We’ve been introduced to some great brands, like Sunday Riley and Oribe, and fabulous products, like Orofluido Elixir and Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensee.

What beauty items topped your list this year? Let us know what you loved!

Kiehl's Michigan Ave Store Opening + President Chris Salgardo's Favorite Things

Chicago welcomed its second freestanding Kiehl’s boutique with the opening of its new Midwest Flagship store on Michigan Avenue. The grand opening was this past weekend, and I stopped by to check it out and also got a few minutes to chat with Kiehl’s President on his favorite products and what’s in store for 2012.

First off, the store is unbelievably cool. High ceilings, a photo booth, exposed brick and obviously a great location – the North Bridge shops near Nordstrom.

Sweet Dreams with Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Eye

A few weeks ago I popped into the Kiehl’s boutique on Armitage in Chicago to pick up a tub of the Kiehl’s Ultra Oil Free Gel Cream. It was an ordinary day of errand running, but it became THAT much more exciting when the sales associate showed me a tube of the not-yet-available for purchase Midnight Recovery Eye cream. Such a tease, that was, because it was love at first application.  The good news is that it’s available now on Kiehl’

Nothing chaps me more than a moisturizing eye cream that doesn’t do anything but moisturize. I need it to work, as in werk. Midnight Recovery Eye activated all of the right senses. The smell is phenomenal, thanks to the addition of lavender essential oils. The texture is creamy and delicious, and feels great to the touch—perfect for the delicate under-eye area. Plus, the ingredients mean this eye cream is going to werk when you are resting. Butcher’s Broom does the heavy lifting by improving circulation and reducing puffiness.  It also contains the healing lipid Squalane which is very replenishing to the skin and Evening Primrose Oil which repairs skin and boosts radiance. In other words, even if you don’t get enough sleep, you’ll look like you did!

Midnight Recovery Eye is $36, and available on Kiehl’ My gal in Chicago said mass distribution is October, so it may be a few weeks before you see it in stores.

Kiehl's Limited Edition Rare Earth Cleansing Masque

Every spring Kiehl’s has a new environmental project that continues their commitment to give back to the community and bring attention to environmental issues. This year the brand celebrates its 160th anniversary and they collaborated with the incredible Michael C. Hall (Dexter anyone?) and Chloë Sevigny to design labels for a limited edition Rare Earth Cleansing Masque that supports the Waterkeeper Alliance. You may remember previous collaborations with Julianne Moore, Pharrell Williams, Jeff Koons and Erykah Badu. With each purchase of this limited edition labelled Rare Earth Cleansing Masque, 100% of the net proceeds will go to Waterkeeper Alliance. As the daughter of a fisherman, protecting our waters is something that’s important to me.

If you have not tried the Rare Earth skincare line yet, this is a great time to try it. As a gal with oily skin who is not a fan of her pores, this product line targets them to pull all the toxins and gunk out of your pores. What’s not to love?

Kiehl Rosa Arctica Youth Regenerating Cream

If you have dry skin, you NEED Kiehl’s new Rosa Arctica Youth Regenerating Cream in your life. I have oily skin so I wouldn’t ordinarily try this product but the dry patches on both sides of my nose were driving me crazy! This cold, winter weather had caught up with me. I had be using everything I had in my arsenal and those damn patches came back. It was when I received a small sample of this new cream from Kiehl’s and tried it that my problem was solved. You can see the area in question here, no dry patches!

Rosa Arctica is a super, super concentrated cream. So concentrated that it a has a unique texture compared to other creams out there. It is very thick and balm like. In order to use it, you need to scoop out a little bit and emulsify it in your hand to make it spreadable. This cream is reported to transform skin to a more youthful beginning of reduced lines and wrinkles, improved firmness, and a dramatic restoration of hydration. It is formulated with a rare “Resurrection Flower that is incredibly resilient. It is able to survive up to 31 months of extreme dehydration and when proper moisture conditions are restored, it returns to life within hours. Sounds promising, right? That’s what I thought.

I received another little sample jar from Neiman’s during their beauty event last week. It’s now safe to say that I have begun stockpiling this product and will continue to in case those pesky dry patches try to come back. A jar of Rosa Arctica retails for $60 and you can find it in stores now.

Product Girl Summer Essentials Turned Fall Favorites

We are well into the fall season now, which we’re happy about… pumpkin spice lattes and sweaters are part of our every day routines now. We are still hooked on some of our summer essentials though, these products saved our lives during the summer and now they are helping us throughout the fall.

  • Votre Vu On Holiday Moisturizing Body Spray – I am not really a fan of body lotions but this is one body moisturizer I can get down with. It sprays on without feeling greasy and leaves my skin smelling AMAZING. Its just like I got back from the tropics and still have gardenias in my hair, this will help keep the tropical vibe going through fall and winter.
  • Osea Undaria Body Polish – This body polish smoothes and moisturizes all without being harsh and abrasive on the skin, it’s really gentle and rich and creamy as well. Thanks to the lemongrass a fantastic citrus scent that’s particularly invigorating in the morning.
  • Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Liquid Sunblock – This was Laurie’s go-to SPF all summer long. As the name indicated, it’s ultra sheer and ultra absorbent. It’s a summer essential, but this will likely see a lot of action in the coming months too.
  • La Mer Oil Absorbing Lotion – This was my go-to moisturizer this summer, I went with the “less is more” approach with this in the hopes that a light formula would help prevent my face from turning into an oil slick and it did really well. Now it’s going to be my oil absorbing staple this fall.
  • Kiehl’s Sunflower Color Preserving Deep Recovery Pak – Chlorine in the pool did horrible things to my hair but this brought it back to life. Just 3 minutes with this on and my hair is manageable again and as soft as silk… and fly away free! Plus I love the smell, it reminds me of my favorite shampoo.
  • Clinique All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage – This is a skincare gem for Laurie. She stores this in the refrigerator and uses it every morning while the coffee’s brewing. Beyond helping perk up the undereye area, it actually helps wake her up! It’s an icy cold blast of caffeine, botanicals and antioxidants. It’s delightful.

What about you? What are your fall favorites? Do you have any summer essentials you’re still using?

Splurge vs. Steal: Kiehl’s Soy Milk & Honey and Burt’s Bees Naturally Nourishing

There’s something inherently comforting about milk and honey. It definitely kicks a cup of tea up a notch, and it’s pretty fantastic as a body cream as well. One such option is Kiehl’s Soy Milk and Honey Hand & Body Lotion (exclusive to Nordstrom). It’s got a light scent and is equally lightweight in texture. It absorbs quickly into the skin but hydrates well and leaves your skin very soft. An 8 oz. bottle of this costs $19.50.

If milk and honey is your thing, but the price of Kiehl’s version isn’t, you may want to consider Burt’s Bees (new and improved) Naturally Nourishing Milk and Honey Body Lotion. The lightweight formula feels similar to Kiehl’s but the scent is a little stronger. I picked up the  6 0z. bottle for under $10 (a small one is also available for half the price) at Target and have been really liking it. The stronger aroma tends to fade away quickly and it leaves your skin soft and moisturized.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that Kiehl’s will be releasing a new addition to their Creme de Corps line — a Soy Milk and Honey Whipped Body Butter in a tub. You can see the image on the website, but the product isn’t available for purchase yet. It sure does look good enough to eat though:)
