Holiday Gift Guide: The Girl's Guy

Every girl has a guy to gift. Be it your man, your dad, brother or best dude. Our final gift guide this week is all about The Girl’s Guy. Presents for the special, and usually difficult to shop for, guy in your life. This list is a mix of practical and splurge, and hope it gives you some inspiration this holiday.

The holidays are a perfect time to treat your guy to some new skin and body care. I know my husband always appreciates some new product! Try the Kiehl’s Men’s Starter Kit for a sampling of travel goodies in a portable bag. We love it even more so because it includes a bar of our favorite dude soap.

Fact. Men hate spending money on nice slippers. Fact. Men appreciate warm and cozy slippers during the wintertime. UGG Australia ‘Ascot’ Slipper is a thoughtful and practical gift. Plus, these have a hard bottom so you can step outside in them.

I grew up getting socks and underwear in my stocking and every year. So naturally, it’s something I always gift to my guy. These J Crew Socks are a splurgy spin on a staple and I think they amp up the fun factor a bit. Plus, they’re super warm and cozy.

The gift that continues to give each month, of course, a Birchbox Man subscription! Available in 3, 6 and 12-month varieties.

I picked up the Old Calgary Alpha Wallet for my husband this holiday (shhh….don’t tell) and I think he’s going to love it. He carries way too much in his wallet and this will help him lighten his back pocket and be super stylish at that same time. Don’t you just love the leather patch?

Wild Ophelia Chocolate is man sweets. How fun are the flavors? We like Beef Jerky (it’s actually YUM!), New Orleans Chili and Smokehouse BBQ Potato Chip. Perfect stocking stuffer!

Holiday Gift Guide: The Active Girl

Our holiday gift guide continues today with gift ideas for The Active Girl. She’s the girl who can get out of bed for an early a.m. workout (we so wish we were her!) and has probably done some type of “athalon.” If you’re not sure what to get her, think gym bag essentials.

Showering at the gym is my least favorite activity, but The Active Girl does it on the regular. So she doesn’t sacrifice skincare, give her the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel packs to store in her gym bag. They exfoliate, improve skin texture and brighten skin in just a few minutes.

Can you say best makeup bag ever? Sonia Kashuk Completely Organized Bag is the most practical gift ever. A classic black nylon bag with so many zippered compartments and pouches to neatly store all of your makeup. This would make a great gift — and you could stuff a few beauty goodies in there to boot!

Securing your hair during a workout is the key to a successful one in my book. How fun are these sparkly Kitsch Metallic Mix Headbands? They stay in place during an hour of cardio sculpt and up the fab factor tremendously. Plus, they are super cute when you’re not at the gym. Find these at Urban Outfitters or Anthropologie.

Snack and Give Back. Bobbi Brown teamed with KIND to create this Eat Pretty Powerful Cube with sales supporting a free public charter school in NYC that helps empower vulnerable youth. The Cube contains 20 of Bobbi’s favorite KIND bars (including Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt – yum!) The Active Girl will totally appreciate this huge supply of KIND fuel.

The Active Girl is constantly showering, so gift her with Kiehl’s Limited Edition Crème de Corps designed by New York Pop artist Kenny Scharf, so her skin stays moisturized. This is one of the holiday collections we look forward to every year, because 100% of profits support RxArt, which brings art to pediatric hospitals. The design is so fun, with Kenny Scharf’s “Squirt” character.

Kiehl's to Launch Rosa Arctica Lightweight and Rosa Arctica Eye

Kiehl’s released some very thrilling news: the Rosa Arctica line will welcome two new members this September, Rosa Arctica Lightweight Cream and Rosa Arctica Eye. These two products were inspired by the incredible demand for the original Rosa Arctica Youth Regenerating Cream introduced in 2011. We couldn’t be more excited — this is our FAVORITE Kiehl’s moisturizer, it even snagged a prime spot in our Top 11 of 2011, and Kiehl’s President Chris Salgardo revealed to us last year that he is partial to it as well!

Like the classic formula, these new Rosa Arctica varieties harness the power of a rare “Resurrection Flower” to “wake up” skin cells to trigger the physiological reactions resulting in healthier, regenerated and more youthful skin. This miracle flower (official name: Haberlea Rhodopensis) is some biological wonder that can dry out completely and survive periods of dryness for up to 31 months and eventually resume normal growth within hours with only a few drops of moisture.

We love the thick creamy tub of Rosa Arctica, but totally appreciate the need for a lighter version. Here’s the scoop:

  • Rosa Arctica Lightweight, $60, features the same benefits of Rosa Arctica Youth Regenerating Cream, in a lighter texture for those with normal to oily skin, or those who simply prefer a lighter texture.
  • Rosa Arctica Eye, $44, is a unique balm formulation that helps provide instant visible results—thanks to mineral brighteners—instant hydration, and revitalizes the appearance of skin in the eye area over time, smoothing crow’s feet and lifting the eye contour area.

What do you think of these? We’ll let you know our thoughts once we try!

Get SPFing with Kiehl's Activated Sun Protector Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen on my face and my body are two very different rituals. I religiously wear SPF on my face and neck every day — even remembering to apply on those bare-faced mornings before I take my dog on a walk. It’s embedded into my routine, therefore, I do it.  I’m willing to bet that I’m not the only one who doesn’t have this same routine for body SPF when not at the beach or poolside? I’m changing my ways on this one, and I have Kiehl’s Activated Sun Protector Sunscreen to thank.

It’s a powerful protectant but the formula is like lotion and nearly odorless. Two very important qualities if I’m slathering on sunscreen on say a Wednesday a.m. before heading into work. There’s more than sun protection happening here (though it is badass with UVA/B SPF 50), which is why it is proving to be easy to fit into my routine.

Kiehl’s boosted the formula with three antioxidants to help fight free radicals: Goji Berry, Vitamin E and Einkorn Wheat. Wondering what Einkorn Wheat is? I was too….apparently it is one of the earliest cultivated forms of wheat (talking 7500 BC times). Together, these join Kiehl’s patented photostable technology to produce an incredibly lightweight formula. It spreads so well, doesn’t leave a white cast and the broad spectrum will protect you in water for up to 80 minutes (though we recommend erring on the side of caution there and reapplying regularly, especially if you are of the perspiring type like we!)

With the heat wave we’ve been having this week in the Midwest, I am so thankful that I discovered this product. Just walking to work I feel the sun trying to age me.

Available now at Kiehl’s for $23.

Mr. Bones and Me…Kiehl's and its Long History with Skeletons

Mr. Bones at Kiehl's Magnificent Mile store, Chicago

Have you ever wondered why there is a skeleton in every Kiehl’s store? Did you know his name is Mr. Bones? When you’ve been around for 160+ years, as Kiehl’s has, you have a pretty strong legacy. Mr. Bones represents that pharmacy heritage, when founding Kiehl’s family member Aaron Morse would use it during consultations to educate patrons on ailments and how their remedies would address them.

If only Aaron Morse and the Kiehl’s crew from the nineteenth century could see what is happening with Mr. Bones this June. Mr. B is getting pimped out by celebs in NYC stores and coming to Facebook in a cool design your own Mr. Bones interactive contest! (sidenote: do people still say “pimp out” — cause I guess I just did!?)

Kiehl’s teamed with 13 notable celebs and creative folks, including Top Chef’s Padma, Alicia Keys, Terry Richardson and Zach Galifianakis, and gave them free reign to build his/her own Mr. Bones. These will be on display at the seven Kiehl’s stores in NYC starting June 2 through July 14. Kiehl’s will be giving away prizes in-store to those who opt for skin consults and/or complementary facials and via Twitter. For the rest of us non-New Yorkers, there’s a pretty cool online component also starting June 2 on Kiehl’s Facebook, which allows you to personalize your own Mr. Bones and share with friends who may also wonder why you’re sharing images of skeletons.

We can’t help but think of Mr. Bones and sing along to the tune of “Mr. Jones.” It just fits, ya know? Pass me a bottle, Mr. Bones….  Specifically, a bottle of the new next month Activated Sun Protector. More on that soon. It looks promising, right?

Mother's Day, Glowing Skin and Vitamin C

We are not mothers at Product Girl, though I am a “proud mama” to a sassy four-year old Boston Terrier, but we love to spend Mother’s Day weekend pampering our moms. The ultimate form of bonding. My Saturday will entail a much-needed pedicure with mom, some shopping and at-home spa-ing.  While I won’t spill what I’m gifting mom with this year, I will share some great ideas and products that we think are musts for you and mom!

There’s  a common thread here: radiant skin by the power of citrus.

- Murad’s new Intensive-C Radiance Peel contributes to a more youthful appearance by smoothing and illuminating skin with the help of glycolic acid, vitamin C, fig and myrtle extract. Benefits also include boosting collagen production, improved skin clarity and less dullness. With just one use, you’ll boast a brighter complexion. $49.50, Sephora.

- And, my personal favorite, Arcona Mandarin Brightening Peel. Mom and I both will be slathering this on our skin this weekend as part of our spa-at-home activity. I’ve been using it for several weeks (only once per seven days – it’s powerful!) and can see an improvement in my skin. The active ingredients to thank are glycolic acid, which exfoliates and regenerates skin, lactic acid, helping with hyper-pigmentation, lycopene, the free radical scavenger, and a series of patented ingredients to help inhibit melanin and fade age spots. Oh, and the first ingredient is orange zest, so you can imagine HOW GOOD this smells. With one use, skin is noticeably brighter. With two, a little more luminous. And by three uses, you’re addicted and counting down the days you get to use it again. $78, Arcona.

- For your daily dose of vitamin C power, there’s Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate. With an impressive 10.5% concentration of pure C, this serum has become a cult fav since its launch in 2005. You can use up to two times daily, a recommended two pumps before your moisturizer, and fine lines are on notice. This Saturday, May 12, you can get a complimentary 10-day sample to experience it yourself. The brand is hosting “Kiehl’s Day of Strength” at all locations on Saturday and serving up some vita C refreshments to go with the samples. Sounds like a great pit stop during my day of mother/daughter bonding! $58, Kiehl’s.

What are you plan’s for this weekend? Any special activities for mom? And if you are a mom, we wish you a perfect day!

Kiehl's Recycle and Be Rewarded (with this Mark Ruffalo picture and video)

Kiehl’s is coming really close to turning this in to a Mark Ruffalo fan blog.

Mark (we’re on a first name basis) is one of the four celebs teaming with Kiehl’s on its partnership with Recycle Across America™.  He helped design a limited edition label for the Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque, and 100% of net proceeds of sales of the specially-packaged Rare Earth masque will benefit Recycle Across America. And his campaign photo (by Timothy White) is just so, well, hot. I mean…right?

Kiehl’s Recycle & Be Rewarded Program:

  • 3 empties=a Lip Balm #1
  • 5 empties=1 product from the Official Kiehl’s Travel Collection
  • 10 empties= any single product with a value of $25 or less

Kiehl’s is also  relaunching its in-store recycling program to help encourage its customers and fans to return empty Kiehl’s bottles, tubes and jars. You’ll see a brand new bin in stores with four different segments to separate the different components of a Kiehl’s product. Pretty cool! I am a card carrying member of the Recycle & Be Rewarded program, and I love it. So must others….since 2009, Kiehl’s has already recycled 500,000 bottles.  Free stuff JUST for recycling in-store. MAC does this, too, and we wish more companies would catch on.

I leave you with this INSPRING video of Mark Ruffalo during his Kiehl’s shoot. He talks about his love for his kids, changing the world and using Kiehl’s. It makes me happy, He is GOOD PEOPLE. You’ll be happier having watched this – promise:)

The Secret to Clear Skin Found?

As much as I love wearing makeup, it feels so good to look great wearing no makeup at all. It’s no easy feat, but it just got a lot easier with Kiehl’s newest innovation: Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution. It’s a next-gen Vitamin C product — an ingredient well documented for its ability to even out skin tone and fight discoloration — that contains a derivative called Activated C. Kiehl’s is the very first brand to bring this to the U.S. market. What’s so special about Activated C?  And how does it differ from others?

Activated C is photo-stable and fully active on contact, which means there’s no need for any carrier molecule to help the ingredient work on skin. It penetrates deeper and faster and starts working right away.  Activated C slows down the production and transfer of melanin, and is proven to help break existing spots and imperfections apart even before they form.

Clearly Corrective helps break down the appearance of dark spots, acne spots, discoloration and uneven skin tone. The secret, if you will, to really having flawless skin. This can be used daily, year round by everyone, regardless of skin tone and type. I love that it’s an all-over the face treatment, addressing issues the eye can see and helping prevent anything under the skin’s surface.

I’ve been using this for about six weeks, and my skin looks better in the buff. My nose was the victim of sun damage and now it’s completely transformed. I can’t even BELIEVE it.

Kiehl's + Earth Day AND Mark Ruffalo

What do Mark Ruffalo, deep pore cleansing and recycling have in common? Kiehl’s, of course. For their 2012 Earth Day campaign, Kiehl’s is teaming with Recycle Across America and releasing four totally awesome Limited Edition Rare Earth Cleansing Masques with label art inspired and created by four celebs. That’s where Mark Ruffalo comes in. He joins Spike Lee, Florence Welch and Rosario Dawson for the 2012 campaign, and 100% of net proceeds from these limited edition Rare Earth Cleansing Masques will benefit Recycle Across America.

This masque is one of our favs at Product Girl. In the warmer months, we use it a few times a week. It’s dude-friendly, too. One I can actually get the man in my house to use —-I care about his pores as well. The Amazonian White Clay helps to purify the skin and other ingredients, including oat kernel flour, help zap up all that surface oil on skin. I’m all for masque-ing for charity, ESPECIALLY when Mark Ruffalo is involved. I will promptly be taking myself to Kiehl’s in April to snag Mark Ruffalo’s design. I love them ALL. I’m tempted to get Florence’s as well. Don’t you love them?

And, a fun fact to leave you with:  Since 2009, Kiehl’s has collected more than 500,000 empty Kiehl’s bottles from shoppers through its “Recycle & Be Rewarded” program.  While I’m a regular recycler (especially because of the rewards), I may not be able to part with these. At least not Mark’s…

Available in April for $23.
