New! Dr. Dennis Gross Steamer Solutions Facial Device

image

I have only experienced the joys of facials twice in my life (I know, I need more!), but the best part of the last one I had was the steam. The facialist took some lemongrass essential oil and just let that wonderful blast of steam penetrate my skin, it was blissful. Now the amazing Dr. Dennis Gross has introduced his Steamer Solutions’ Facial Device, and available now at Nordstrom.

At $125, this is a professional device that delivers a constant flow of moisture for up to 20 minutes at a time. Aside from being the most relaxing part of a skincare routine that you’ll experience, steam will help clear your pores and hydrate your skin while helping your products do their job even better since the steam helps with penetration.

I love that Dr. Gross has introduced this device. Standing over a boiling tea kettle or boiling pot of water is not my idea of a good time. A device like this that makes the process easy is exactly what I would want. He’s already pushing the envelope with his products and now we have our first tool. I can’t wait to see what he does next. How about a you?

Product Girl Favorites of 2012

2012-Favorite-Beauty-Products

It’s time for a beauty year in review.  Trust us, picking just 10 favorites for an entire year was no easy feat. We discovered a plethora of new brands and fell in love with so much. These 10 favorites are the products we use constantly. The ones that really stand out and we would buy over and over again!

BECCA Bolero Mineral Blush is a flattering terracotta shade that doubles as a bronzer. It’s my perfect cheek.

This bright cobalt Essie Butler Please nail polish is stunning and a newer discovery!  I’m confident I will wear this constantly in 2013.

Every morning starts with a cup of coffee and One Love Organics Morning Glory serum. It contains a ton of antioxidant power and perk-up ingredients like peppermint oil.

Highlighters are a Product Girl’s best friend and we are partial to the pale bronzy gold Benefit Sun Beam.

Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pad for Body just make everything look and feel tighter and naturally tanned. Like an Rx for the Vitamin D deficient.

Hands down, my favorite shadow of 2012: NARS Vent Glace Duo Eyeshadow

Still mystified by the brightening powers of Bare Escentuals Well Rested Face & Eye Brightener.

Melvita Orange Blossom Extraordinary Water brings me to a happy place and is always step one in my skin care routine, day and night.

The perfect top knot achieved with Sarah Potempa The Wrap-Up. And low bun, messy undone bun, etc. It does it all and perfectly.

NARS Mexican Rose Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil is the longest wearing lip product I’ve ever worn (and it’s not technically a stain!) I always have a good day when wearing this gorgeous bright pink.

Any favorites you’d like to share? Let us know your thoughts on 2012 standout beauty!

Holiday Gift Guide: The Active Girl

Our holiday gift guide continues today with gift ideas for The Active Girl. She’s the girl who can get out of bed for an early a.m. workout (we so wish we were her!) and has probably done some type of “athalon.” If you’re not sure what to get her, think gym bag essentials.

Showering at the gym is my least favorite activity, but The Active Girl does it on the regular. So she doesn’t sacrifice skincare, give her the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel packs to store in her gym bag. They exfoliate, improve skin texture and brighten skin in just a few minutes.

Can you say best makeup bag ever? Sonia Kashuk Completely Organized Bag is the most practical gift ever. A classic black nylon bag with so many zippered compartments and pouches to neatly store all of your makeup. This would make a great gift — and you could stuff a few beauty goodies in there to boot!

Securing your hair during a workout is the key to a successful one in my book. How fun are these sparkly Kitsch Metallic Mix Headbands? They stay in place during an hour of cardio sculpt and up the fab factor tremendously. Plus, they are super cute when you’re not at the gym. Find these at Urban Outfitters or Anthropologie.

Snack and Give Back. Bobbi Brown teamed with KIND to create this Eat Pretty Powerful Cube with sales supporting a free public charter school in NYC that helps empower vulnerable youth. The Cube contains 20 of Bobbi’s favorite KIND bars (including Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt – yum!) The Active Girl will totally appreciate this huge supply of KIND fuel.

The Active Girl is constantly showering, so gift her with Kiehl’s Limited Edition Crème de Corps designed by New York Pop artist Kenny Scharf, so her skin stays moisturized. This is one of the holiday collections we look forward to every year, because 100% of profits support RxArt, which brings art to pediatric hospitals. The design is so fun, with Kenny Scharf’s “Squirt” character.

This all-natural cleanser impressed judges because of its lack of skin-irritating fragrances and sulfates, and readers raved about the rich, creamy lather and fresh honeysuckle scent. Green tea extract helps protect skin from damage, and avocado oil is rich in vitamins and minerals that help moisturize and regenerate skin cells.

This slick-looking razor improves the condition of skin thanks to the water-activated moisturizing serum surrounding the razor’s blades. Testers also loved the easy-to-grip handle and maneuverable head, which made shaving tricky areas like knees and ankles a breeze.

Extracts of algae, mushroom, and flowering southernwood deliver antioxidants that can help protect skin from damage and dehydration, and before-and-after photographs clearly showed that this lotion delivered improvements to the texture and elasticity of skin.

This rich cream wowed both testers and judges by delivering noticeable enhancements in roughness, scaling, and brown spots in just six weeks. Testers also loved that this cream hydrated without making hands slippery or smelly.

Congrats to all of the winners!

DIY Tan that Does it All: Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pad for Body

Last week I got a fancy (read: expensive) spray tan. And while the woman was airbrushing my skin, she recited a laundry list of things I couldn’t do in order to preserve my tan. Don’t use anything with Vitamin C. Don’t shower in hot water. Lukewarm water might even be “too hot.” Don’t exfoliate. Don’t shower for eight hours. Don’t put on your shoes. Wear loose clothing the rest of the day. Sleep in loose clothing. While some of these are perfectly acceptable rules to follow, overall, I felt that I was sacrificing skin care for this tan. Because as the week went on, I felt like the tan was just sitting on top of my skin and I was stopping my normal routine because of it. Not to mention, seven hours after I got the tan, I went to sleep (in loose clothing) and woke up to a stained pillowcase and sheets. And no, it didn’t come out in the wash.

But here’s the thing. You don’t have to sacrifice skin care for a tan. The Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pad for Body is PROOF. In fact, it IS skin care. The face versions totally rocked our worlds last year, and now we are devotees of the body version. These DO everything.  Give a beautiful tan (the obvious part), exfoliate, firm and help smooth bumps (a.k.a. the unfortunate “chicken” skin). There’s no nervous nelly list of things not to do when you use these, and that’s what I love. Plus, for $45 you get eight pads. Sure beats that same price for one unfortunate spray.

Because we want you to understand just how revolutionary these are, here’s a closer look at how these ingredients work to make your body look beautiful (and tan!)

  • Glycolic Acid:  anti-aging warrior
  • Lactic Acid: speeds up skin cell renewal
  • Willow Bark Extract: a natural alternative to salicylic acid that clears pores
  • Soy Protein: kick-starts collagen production and ensures a natural tan
  • Encapsulated DHA: time released color
  • Caffeine: helps firm and slim (did you know most cellulite fighters have caffeine in it?)
  • Capslow: minimizes hair growth and texture
  • Vitamins A, C, E: potent antioxidants to prevent collagen breakdown
  • Vitamin B: reduce appearance of pores and heal wounds
  • Vitamin D: A little bit of sun in here — this makes the other vitamins work better!
  • Phospholipids: Draws moisture in from the air and seals it into the skin.

Wow, right?

These are now a part of my Sunday night pampering routine. I find that layering some body lotion on after helps prevent any streaking or uneven application. There’s just the slightest self-tanning smell that develops a few hours later and there will be no transfer to clothing. Not a bit.

They’re available now at all places Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare is sold. And we’re stockpiling.

Product Girl's Top 11 of 2011

Narrowing down the best beauty releases of the year can be a daunting task. But when it comes down to choosing the best of the best, all we really had to do was look in our makeup bags and on our bathroom counters. From there, it was pretty clear what products we can’t live without and will happily  carry into the New Year. Without further ado, we present to you the Product Girl Top 11 of 2011.

While this list is officially in no particularly order, NARS Velvet Gloss Pencil is definitely our favorite lip product of the year. We can’t get enough of these. Frivolous and New Lover are my top two, but the deep raspberry of Baroque is a close third. We absolutely love how these look and feel on the lips – the subtle gloss, burst of color and moisturizing properties make them a major winner.

We purchased countless tubes of Burts’s Bees Tinted Lip Balms this year. For ourselves and for others. The Rose is the perfect tint of sheer red, and Honeysuckle is a lovely peachy nude. The formula is 100% natural and the price, at $7, is just right. These are a standout drugstore buy of 2011.

We continue to be mesmerized by this seafoam green tub of youth! Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica is such an  interesting moisturizier. It’s thick in texture, very balm-like, but doesn’t feel like it on the skin, and seems to instantly make our skin look brighter and healthier. Plus, we love the way Rosa Arctica looks on our bathroom counter!

Thank you, Dr. Dennis Gross, for reviving our pale skin and helping me fight my Vitamin D deficiency with the Alpha Beta Glow Pads. Since these launched in February, they’ve been a constant in my beauty routine. I don’t let actual sun rays get near my face, so these were a godsend. Unlike self-tanner, these are skin care. They give you a legit bronze and unleash anti-aging + exfoliating properties into your skin.

Perhaps the most difficult category for us to choose the “best of” was nail polish. But, Chanel Black Pearl managed to take home the honors. This gunmetal green is like an edgy accessory that goes with everything. It looked good no matter the season, and on fingers or toes.

Benefit Cha Cha Tint was worth waiting until 2011 for. It is a delicious mango-colored stain that looks intimidating in the bottle but is like magic on the skin. If you think you can’t wear coral, Cha Cha Tint can prove you wrong. Plus, it’s a stain so it lasts forever.

Another cheek product that dominated our makeup bags the majority of 2011 was Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush. We can’t pick just one favorite, so consider ALL of them the best of 2011. (Although, we might be partial to Amused and Tipsy!) They are the longest wearing powder blush you’ll ever use and the color stays vibrant all day. And the colors are phenomenal and importantly, flattering on the skin.

2011 will go down as the year the U.S. got a taste of the BB Cream. And we couldn’t be more smitten with Boscia’s B.B. Cream SPF 27 PA++, a skin perfecting “blemish balm” that is like a super-powered tinted moisturizer. It manages to blur out imperfections and moisturize our skin. In the summer, we could get away with using this for coverage, moisture and SPF!

A serum that actually helps repair and heal damaged hair and split ends? Yes, it exists.  The exotic oils and silk peptides in Phyto Phytokératine Serum  helps strengthen strands and restore moisture to dry hair (and is silicone-free). I truly believe that by slathering the ends of my hair in this, I can go a lot longer without a trim.

The central weapon in our fight against aging is sunscreen. It may not be the most exciting part of our beauty routine, but it’s very necessary. Skinceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense is the best facial SPF we’ve ever used. We like that it contains only physical blockers and a special extract that increases skin defenses and resistance to UV and heat stress. But the best part? It feels weightless on the skin.

Each month, we looked forward to the arrival of the pink Birchbox! What a treat – which is why this beauty delivery service deserves a spot in our best of 2011 list. We’ve been introduced to some great brands, like Sunday Riley and Oribe, and fabulous products, like Orofluido Elixir and Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensee.

What beauty items topped your list this year? Let us know what you loved!

Faux Glowing: The Best Self Tanners at Every Price

Sunless tanning is a way of life. From the maintenance, like regular exfoliation, and of course, proper application. No sugar coating here, a lot can go wrong in the self tanning process. Everything from streaking and patchy spots to orange skin and burnt looking hands. It’s all of these factors that lead me to take great pride in my faux tan. In fact, most everyone mistakes it for the real thing. But I’ve got no interest in exposing my skin to actual sun – at least not without my SPF 30! Here’s my tips, tricks and product recommendations for achieving that perfect faux glow.

Best in Skin: Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pads. I cannot say enough good things about these. I pretty much use these exclusively to tan my face. The color I get is natural looking and healthy, and it’s fragrance free. I love that it’s not only a sunless tanner, but skin care. It has anti-aging properties and encourages that much needed cell turnover. Oh, and it contains active Vitamin D. $32 for a box of 20 at Sephora.

Best in Longevity: TanTowel. I actually am not the hugest self-tanning towelette fan, believe it or not. I find that this is where streaking and blotching is most likely to occur. But I do like TanTowel, a lot. I get amazing colorwith these, and it seems to lasts longer than any other iteration of this style of product. I’d say I can get about 4-5 days out of this until it really starts to fade. And even then, I get a few more days of semi-tanned skin. The key here is apply in circular motions repeatedly to ensure you’re not missing a spot, and to open a new towel if it starts to dry out. I use about two TanTowels at a time, at night only. The citrus smell is lovely at application, but the self tanning smell does appear once the color develops. $27 for 10 applications, Ulta.

Best in Budget: Jergens Natural Glow Express. This gets our vote for best drugstore self-tanner. It transforms your skin shades darker in just three days (I was satisfied after just two!), and there’s two different versions based on skin tone, so no worries if you’re on the fair side. When I first used this earlier this spring, I was winter white and it worked magic. $8 at the drugstore.

Best in Natural: Josie Maran Argan Self Tanning Cream. Not only is this the first self-tanner to contain 100% organic Argan Oil, the natural formula is infused with caffeine molecules to wake up cells and tone the skin’s surface. It can be used head to toe, and is scent-free! The secret is DHA derived from sugar beets and sugar cane that work together with your skin’s proteins to create a natural-looking tan. $32 for 4oz., Josie Maran.

Best in Maintenance: St. Tropez Everyday Gradual Tan for Body. St. Tropez gets the gold star for its self-tanning products – it’s what they’re known for. I especially love the Everyday Gradual Tan lotion for maintenance. I use it as a body lotion post-shower (no tanning smell, at all – promise!) and it deepens and maintains the tan I’ve already built daily. I use the Light/Medium. $30 for 6.7 oz., Sephora.

Best in Temporary: MAC Skinsheen Leg Spray. There are times where a temporary tan is needed. When you’re wearing a skirt, shorts or just out for the night. I love MAC’s formula – it’s a hybrid mousse gel that looks so good on the gams. This offers a subtle sheen and evens everything out very nice. It can also be used on other areas on the body if needed. Once it dries, it stays until you wash it off. Your white clothing is safe. $26.50, MAC.

Any self-tanning tips and tricks to share? Or…any horror stories? We’re all friends here – dish!

Beauty VIP of the Week: Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pads

According to my favorite Chicago weather guru Tom Skilling, this April is shaping up to be the least sunny on record. To say I need Vitamin D badly is an understatement. To help ease the pain of sun deprivation is Dr. Dennis Gross’ Alpha Beta Glow Pad, a.k.a. the eighth wonder of the world (or perhaps more realistically, this week’s Beauty VIP).

This is not just a self-tanning towelette, but rather an anti-aging exfoliating self-tanner with active Vitamin D. In just one Glow Pad, the Vitamin D, microencapsulated DHA and soy proteins deliver color deep into your skin and alpha & beta hydroxy acids exfoliate, tighten pores, eliminate blackheads and help even out your skin tone. It’s also completely odorless and streak-free. In short, you want in on these.

I don’t tan my face naturally, and often times it’s because many self-tanners just aren’t right for the face. The Alpha Beta Glow Pads are designed for your face and provides the most natural-looking radiance. I use these and find myself needing less face makeup – which sounds perfect for the summer I’m hoping shows up at some point.

My only complaint is that these aren’t available in body versions. Although, I think our good friends at Dr. Dennis Gross are on it…

You can get 20 applications of your Alpha Beta Glow on for $32. This wonder product is available at Sephora, but I purchased mine from Dr. Dennis Gross website where I also received some good samples at checkout.
