Product Girl's Top 11 of 2011

Narrowing down the best beauty releases of the year can be a daunting task. But when it comes down to choosing the best of the best, all we really had to do was look in our makeup bags and on our bathroom counters. From there, it was pretty clear what products we can’t live without and will happily  carry into the New Year. Without further ado, we present to you the Product Girl Top 11 of 2011.

While this list is officially in no particularly order, NARS Velvet Gloss Pencil is definitely our favorite lip product of the year. We can’t get enough of these. Frivolous and New Lover are my top two, but the deep raspberry of Baroque is a close third. We absolutely love how these look and feel on the lips – the subtle gloss, burst of color and moisturizing properties make them a major winner.

We purchased countless tubes of Burts’s Bees Tinted Lip Balms this year. For ourselves and for others. The Rose is the perfect tint of sheer red, and Honeysuckle is a lovely peachy nude. The formula is 100% natural and the price, at $7, is just right. These are a standout drugstore buy of 2011.

We continue to be mesmerized by this seafoam green tub of youth! Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica is such an  interesting moisturizier. It’s thick in texture, very balm-like, but doesn’t feel like it on the skin, and seems to instantly make our skin look brighter and healthier. Plus, we love the way Rosa Arctica looks on our bathroom counter!

Thank you, Dr. Dennis Gross, for reviving our pale skin and helping me fight my Vitamin D deficiency with the Alpha Beta Glow Pads. Since these launched in February, they’ve been a constant in my beauty routine. I don’t let actual sun rays get near my face, so these were a godsend. Unlike self-tanner, these are skin care. They give you a legit bronze and unleash anti-aging + exfoliating properties into your skin.

Perhaps the most difficult category for us to choose the “best of” was nail polish. But, Chanel Black Pearl managed to take home the honors. This gunmetal green is like an edgy accessory that goes with everything. It looked good no matter the season, and on fingers or toes.

Benefit Cha Cha Tint was worth waiting until 2011 for. It is a delicious mango-colored stain that looks intimidating in the bottle but is like magic on the skin. If you think you can’t wear coral, Cha Cha Tint can prove you wrong. Plus, it’s a stain so it lasts forever.

Another cheek product that dominated our makeup bags the majority of 2011 was Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush. We can’t pick just one favorite, so consider ALL of them the best of 2011. (Although, we might be partial to Amused and Tipsy!) They are the longest wearing powder blush you’ll ever use and the color stays vibrant all day. And the colors are phenomenal and importantly, flattering on the skin.

2011 will go down as the year the U.S. got a taste of the BB Cream. And we couldn’t be more smitten with Boscia’s B.B. Cream SPF 27 PA++, a skin perfecting “blemish balm” that is like a super-powered tinted moisturizer. It manages to blur out imperfections and moisturize our skin. In the summer, we could get away with using this for coverage, moisture and SPF!

A serum that actually helps repair and heal damaged hair and split ends? Yes, it exists.  The exotic oils and silk peptides in Phyto Phytokératine Serum  helps strengthen strands and restore moisture to dry hair (and is silicone-free). I truly believe that by slathering the ends of my hair in this, I can go a lot longer without a trim.

The central weapon in our fight against aging is sunscreen. It may not be the most exciting part of our beauty routine, but it’s very necessary. Skinceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense is the best facial SPF we’ve ever used. We like that it contains only physical blockers and a special extract that increases skin defenses and resistance to UV and heat stress. But the best part? It feels weightless on the skin.

Each month, we looked forward to the arrival of the pink Birchbox! What a treat – which is why this beauty delivery service deserves a spot in our best of 2011 list. We’ve been introduced to some great brands, like Sunday Riley and Oribe, and fabulous products, like Orofluido Elixir and Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensee.

Beauty VIP of the Week: Boscia BB Cream with SPF 27 PA +

When it comes to BB creams, I can’t really say I am familiar with them. I defer to the lovely Muse on all matters BB cream. From what I understand, the product is your moisturizer, primer, concealer, treatment and foundation all in one. They are all the rage in Asian markets but relatively new to the US. Boscia’s BB Cream with SPF 27 PA + is one of those new BB creams to enter the market. After using one for just a short time, I have to wonder… what took so long? I can’t believe I didn’t try a BB cream sooner.

I have a thing for tinted moisturizers but they don’t give me enough coverage, especially with the hormonal thing I’ve told you about. With Boscia’s BB Cream, I have the tinted moisturizer texture and ease that I love and then some. It gives me medium coverage while remaining light as a feather… I forget I even have it on. It goes to work evening out my imperfections and does a good job of covering up the redness I seem to be experiencing more and more of lately. It doesn’t cover up my other issues completely but I can set those areas with a powder foundation and be good to go. I like to set the rest of my face with a little powder foundation as well but I do not concentrate it as I do with my jawline.

You can see what this looks like on my skin here. I took this picture Thursday night around 10pm… after 6 hours of wear. You can see there’s a bit of a shine developing but for the most part, my skin just looks like it is glowing. By this time with other products, I’d need to pull out the blotting papers.  This BB cream doesn’t call attention to my pores, which I am now so self-conscious about, seems to let what’s good about my skin shine through and I love that! I am a dewy glowing goddess with this on. Redness and pores minimized, lightweight feel with medium coverage and long wearing… I couldn’t ask for more this summer.

Best of 2010: Our Favorite Skincare Items

Skincare, above all things, is probably our number one beauty priority. Can’t build a house without a good foundation right? There were a few items that really stood out to us in 2010 — for their innovation, hydration, simplicity and ability to make our skin feel, and look, fabulous. Here’s what we loved this past year.

Josie Maran Argan Primer Mist – I cannot get enough of all things Argan, thanks to Josie Maran – her Argan Primer Mist included. This can be used as a primer, it’s so hydrating and really helps prepare the skin for layers of makeup, but I think it’s even better used as a refresher  mid-day or on clean skin. I’ve recommended this product to pretty much every woman I know.

Boscia Black Luminizing Mask – This mask by Boscia is the ultimate de-gunker. It sucks everything out of your pores and minimizes them in the process, and really does give a luminizing effect to the skin. Carla and I were both quite impressed. I used it twice weekly in the summer, but now that it’s winter I find I use it once every 7-10 days. I’m addicted!

Clarisonic Opal – Speaking of addiction…the Clarisonic Opal. This is a fantastic innovation, and it works. Admittedly, I don’t have serious undereye wrinkles but even I notice a perk in the skin around my eyes.

Kate Somerville CytoCell Dermal Energizing Treatment – Carla and her CytcoCell became best friends this year. It tamed the dry patches, helps control excess oil and helped reduce overall redness in a light weight and emollient formula… LOVE!! You can read more about Kate Somerville products at

Yes to Cucumbers Soothing Facial Wipes – These are a budget beauty steal! In terms of facial wipes, these may be the most soothing I’ve ever used. They are what they promise to be. I also really enjoy the cucumber scent. It’s like a spa at home.

What skincare items made your list of favorites for 2010?

Ten or Less Thursday: Boscia Peppermint Blotting Linens

I was sitting here at my desk thinking “come on 4 o’clock!” so I could get out of here and make my way to Sephora so I can use my VIB 20% off coupon and suddenly remember it is Thursday! And we didn’t have a Ten or Less item up. Well here it is… Boscia’s Peppermint Blotting Linens.

Normally these are $10 but right now Sephora has them on sale for only $5 this week, lower than some of its drugstore counterparts. I have a ton of Boscia’s blotting linens in different scents all over the place; work, car and home but I do not have peppermint, that is going in my cart for sure with the VIB sale going on.

How about you? Are you picking these up?

Beauty VIP of the Week: Boscia Luminizing Black Mask

I have a weird fascination with things that peel. I have been known to put glue on my hands and just enjoy peeling it off. I know it’s weird but I like it. When I read about the new Boscia Luminizing Black Mask, it was game on!

This mask is a mineral peeling mask. It goes on black and gooey then dries to a smooth finish pull out all gunk out of the surface of your skin. Pretty in Dayton summed it up really well, it’s like a huge Biore mask for your skin. The moment I peeled the mask off for the first time, that came to mind. I thought this too, she happened to say it first. 🙂 There is a little more to this mask though…

I hope I didn’t scare you away! Now this is me wearing the mask how I like to apply it, on the thick side. This makes the tube of product not last as long so I’ve been playing with my application a bit. Otherwise, the only downside is that it can be kind of messy. Be careful about how close you apply the product to the hair line, getting this stuff in your hair is not fun!

I have to say, I really enjoy removing this mask. It peels off all in one piece and on the inside of it, you can see some of the gunk you just removed from your pores… I almost took a picture to show you but thought that might be crossing the line. 😉 However, if that was not reward enough, it also gives my skin a nice, healthy glow. Everything is brighter and my redness in the cheeks is diminished. Not to mention the size of my pores is minimized, it just makes everything look better all around.

Preserve the Earth with Boscia

With Earth Day, Boscia wants you to “preserve the earth” and remember to make more natural choices. This company has developed a line of preservative and chemical free products that are worth a look.

Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel and Oil Free Hydration with SPF 15 We in the Product Girl household have been using some of Boscia’s products for a little while and so far, we like what we see. My favorites are the Purifying Cleansing Gel and Oil Free Daily Hydration with SPF 15. The cleanser feels soothing even though it deep cleans. It doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight all. All you need is a little bit to form a nice lather and off you go. As for the moisturizer, it’s not greasy or heavy which are things we look for in a moisturizer. It has a thinner consistency so it spreads easily and sinks in very quickly. This moisturizer also helped to control excess oil on our skin and has SPF 15, so we’re definitely happy about that. It would be nice to see a little more SPF but this is a good start. For oily skin gals, this is great stuff.

Boscia Blotting Linens While I just started using the skincare recently, like me, you may be more familiar with Boscia’s Blotting Linens. These little books of 100 linens helps absorb excess oil on your skin with 100% natural abaca leaf fibers. They comes in six different scents: Fresh, Green Tea, Lavender, Rose, California Orange and Peppermint. I’ve been bouncing back between Green Tea and Rose and I love how they leave a soft scent on your skin. I can still smell the rose scent on my skin after I’ve blotted.

A few interesting facts about Boscia on Earth Day…

  • Boscia features two unique ingredients in every product: organically-grown jojoba leaf and willowherb. The preservative-free products not only free your skin of chemical irritation, they also reverse the symptoms that preservatives have been known to trigger, like acne, redness, and inflammation.
  • Boscia uses “clean room” technology to insure the highest level of cleanliness and have designed a “green” facility that mandates energy-efficiency and environmentally-friendly practices throughout production. The facility is designed on a vertical structure and accordingly, the assembly line begins on the top floor of the building and moves down, using gravity to move products from one process to the next.

Next time you’re in Sephora, take a look at this line… Mother Earth will thank you for it.
