A Perfect Pair: Bobbi Brown Skin Mineral Foundation and Face Brush

It’s been a very long time since I’ve used a mineral foundation. I’ve always found them to be a little cakey and not right for my skin. So no one was more surprised than me to come across a mineral foundation that made me neglect my tinted moisturizers and liquid foundations. But Bobbi Brown’s Skin Mineral Foundation is the real deal. A little touch of concealer (or a lot, depending on how much sleep I’m getting) and a blend of powder all over and I’m good. Actually, I’m better than good — my skin looks so natural. I have many a Kabuki brushes that I love, but I picked up Bobbi’s Face Brush and I think it makes application even better. It’s incredibly soft, making it an absolute treat to powder my face every morning. I’ve been using the Light shade, but I think it runs dark and can see myself converting to Extra Light for “pale season.”

I never thought I’d experience a hydrating and good-for-my skin mineral foundation, so kudos to Bobbi! We give this an A++.

Bobbi Brown 20th Anniversary Lip Palette

Doesn’t this palette just call out your name? That is what it is doing for me… just imagine the possibilities. To celebrate Bobbi Brown’s 20th anniversary, this 20th Anniversary Lip Palette was created. The palette features Bobbi’s original ten lipstick shades as well as ten new bright, modern wearable shades that show how Bobbi Brown has evolved over the years.

It all started back in 1991. Bobbi was discouraged but the lack of flattering lip colors that were available, so she created her own. Her initial ten shades had a brown base, which was in her opinion the most natural complement to a woman’s skin tone. After a small editorial mention in a magazine, Bobbi was soon taking countless phone orders from her home and it wasn’t long before she caught the attention of Bergdorf Goodman, which ultimately launched her collection. Bobbi hoped that she would sell 100 lipsticks in her first month at the store—and she ended up selling them in just one day.

Here are the shades in this collection:

1991 Colors

  • Salmon
  • Beige
  • Raisin
  • Brown
  • Rose
  • Pink
  • Orange
  • Blackberry
  • Burnt Red
  • Red

2011 Exclusive Colors

  • Lady Ruba
  • Berry Punch
  • Hot Berry
  • Watermelon
  • Atomic Pink
  • Party Pink
  • Cosmic Lily

This palette retails for $60. It is available now on Bobbi’s website and will be hitting Bobbi counters everywhere in October. Are you onboard the 20th Anniversary Lip Palette train?

In a Makeup Rut? Go Bold with Eyeliner

The other day I realized that I was in a serious makeup rut. My summer eye makeup routine is pretty no nonsense, and I think I’ve worn the same three eyeshadows all summer long. I just can’t be bothered with elaborate eye makeup when it’s hot. But, I hit my wall. I got bored, and maybe even a little whiny one morning. Then I picked up my Lancome Ink Artliner in Teal Delight from the Spring 2010 collection (a favorite still!) This lovely cream liner was my one-way ticket out of rutsville. It’s amazing what a simple swipe of color along your lashline can do for a mood.

Pop of teal

I believe this liner was limited edition, so if you don’t have it, here are a few recommendations for you to  get our of your summer eye makeup rut. My picks are all in the blue/green family, because I just can’t get enough.

  • Lancome Le Stylo Waterproof Long Lasting EyeLiner in Minuit ($25.50) – It’s a deep navy that I think has an interesting twinge of teal. This is way more interesting than basic black.
  • Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Ivy Shimmer Ink ($21) – The ultimate gel liner out there! These are so easy to use, and the colors are stunning. Especially this deep green.
  • Tarte SmolderEYES Amazonian Clay Waterproof Eyeliner in Navy ($25) – Love these for a one-minute smokey eye, or just a swipe along the lashline. They have fantastic staying power and powerful pigment.
  • NARS Larger than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Rue St. Honore ($23) – This navy eyeliner is possibly the most gorgeous navy blue eyeliner I’ve ever seen. It just lights up my eyes. I’m a blue-eyed child, and it’s awesome. BUT if you have blue eyes, you need this.

Any eyeliners you’d add to the list? Let us know!

New! Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Mineral Makeup with SPF 15

When so many brands entered the mineral makeup arena, Bobbi Brown did not and I have to wonder if it was because she was perfecting her own formula for Skin Foundation Mineral Makeup until it performed exactly as she wanted it to. Now it is here and I for one, cannot wait to try it.

Skin Foundation Mineral Makeup SPF 15 is revolutionary, consisting of an exclusive vitamin and mineral blend that is triple coated with vitamins, moisturizers and conditioners, and film formers. It is then triple milled into fine particles that create a smooth, silky finish. This weightless mineral formula is particularly special because of three unique features:

Skin looks like skin…
A perfectly balanced blend of mineral powders provides a unique translucency that allows the skin’s natural luminosity to show through. Powders in different shapes and sizes were chosen to create a weightless, aerated sensation and natural look on the skin. This formula absorbs excess oil on the surface of the skin and delivers a natural, healthy finish.

It contains moisturizers and skin conditioners…
Sodium Hyaluronate, a powerful moisture magnet, keeps skin’s moisture balanced, preventing dryness and caking, which exaggerate the appearance of fine lines. Squalane, Soy Bean Extract and Ceramides help soften and smooth skin. Vitamin B and mineral powders provide skin conditioning benefits.

Powerful protection…
This mineral formula contains a unique complex that bonds Vitamins C and E together, providing prolonged activity and a slow release of broad spectrum antioxidant protection.

For light to medium coverage, apply with a Face Brush in a circular motion that allows the powder to be buffed and seamlessly blended into the skin. For medium to full coverage, use a powder puff as it picks up a greater amount of the product and allows it to be worked into the skin. Start by pressing the product into the skin with a powder puff and then blend it in by sweeping over it with a face brush.

Skin Foundation Mineral Makeup comes in 9 shades:

  • Alabaster
  • Extra Light
  • Light
  • Light to Medium
  • Medium
  • Medium to Dark
  • Dark
  • Deep
  • Rich

Look for this online now and at a counter near you in September retailing for $38.00 a jar. What do you think? Are you trying this out? We’ll need to compare notes if you do. ;)

Fall Beauty Snapshots: Lancome, Estee Lauder, Bobbi Brown

Hands down, our favorite season is fall. What’s not to love? Cozy sweaters and boots, leaves changing color, pumpkin spice lattes and of course, fall makeup collections! While we are savoring summer (especially Carla, since Seattle totally spaced out on the heat wave the rest of America got!), we’re looking forward to incorporating the best of fall beauty into our makeup routine.

Lancome’s Fall 2011 Collection has us excited! Isn’t the campaign image chic? The collection is named after the original Lancome boutique in Paris, 29 St. Honore. Love the red lips and red nails, courtesy of Bang Bang Red Polish. Don’t you see it as a perfect holiday shade?  I’m going to Paris in October with my husband, so I’m feeling the need to snap up some of these items — especially the Eiffel Tower imprinted blush!

Estee Lauder’s Modern Mercury Pure Color collection created by Tom Pecheux has its fair share of chic going on as well. But it’s not the red lips and semi-smokey eyes that I’m drawn to; rather it’s the stunning Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelée. A must-have! Other highlights include a new Velvet Lipstick formula and that oh-so-complex green/gold Pure Color Nail Polish.

Bobbi Brown’s Fall 2011 Tortoise Shell collection is about standout eyes, just like a great pair of glasses. In fact, it’s inspired by her dark-rimmed glasses! Bobbi may forever have the market cornered on eye shadow palettes that you compulsively just need. Because, quite simply, I see a need for both the Bronze and Sand eye shadow palette. The shades are ideal for anytime of the year, and hey, I wear glasses, too!

Love the Sun, But Love SPF More

I can get pretty preachy when I’m passionate about something. Like how Boston Terriers are the cutest breed of dog and how The Bachelorette is quality television, for example. The importance of wearing SPF is also something I step on my proverbial pulpit for. It’s the single most important step in preventing skin cancer, and if that doesn’t quite resonate, hello, the anti-aging benefits should!

Here’s our picks for the best sunscreens of summer, and beyond.  Remember, SPF is a year-round necessity!

Best in Multitasking. Kate Somerville SPF 55 Serum Sunscreen. We trust our faces with Kate completely, and SPF is no exception. We especially love that this antioxidant-rich sunscreen doubles as a serum, eliminating an extra step in our morning routine. $45 for 2oz. KateSomerville.com

Best in Natural. Josie Maran Protect Daily Sun Protection Argan Oil Infused SPF 40+. Sometimes natural sunscreens can be tough to blend, but not this one. This is infused with Argan Oil, and works to repair skin and improve skin tone. I love the mild, lightweight formula. I find it’s a great base for makeup in the summer, too! $32 for 2 oz. Sephora.com

Best in Texture. SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50. Absolutely weightless, this is a powerhouse at fighting off the sun’s harmful rays. It contains only physical blockers, as well as a plankton extract (called artemia salina) to increase the skin’s ability to defend against UV and heat stress. As an added bonus, it comes in a universal tint that makes makeup-free days a reality. $30 for 1.7 oz. SkinCeuticals.com

Best in Powder. Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF™ Dry Sunscreen – SPF 30. Ancient clay rich in minerals is at play in this product, and this might be my favorite for the purse. It starts working upon application, and layers well over moisturizer and other products. The tanned version is great for giving arms and legs some sculpt, and the translucent seamlessly disappears while protecting. The only downside? It’s kinda pricey. $44, Jane Iredale

Best in Lips. Bobbi Brown Treatment Lip Shine SPF 15. This formula covers off on the SPF, and is the perfect summery lip. Bright colors in a sheer, juicy formula that’s packed with cocoa and shea butters and jojoba, apricot kernel and avocado oils. It really is a treatment for your lips! $23, BobbiBrownCosmetics.com

Best in Budget. Aveeno Smart Essentials Daily Nourishing Moisturizer SPF 30. Aveeno does sun protection very well, and I really appreciate how they included SPF 30 in the Smart Essentials day moisturizer. Another multitasker! The star ingredient is southernwood extract, an antioxidant that helps soothe stressed skin. $15 for 2.5 oz. Ulta

Best in Ingredients. PCA Skin Perfecting Protection SPF 30. There are so many rock star ingredients in here, it’s mind-blowing. Caffeine, Silybin (a.k.a. milk thistle), bearberry, licorice root extract, lactic acid, kojic acid, among others, work to reduce skin discoloration and prevent future hyperpigmentation. Sun spots, you’ve been warned. I use this mainly on my arms, chest and neck but it is also good for the face. $24 for 1.7 oz. Dermstore.com

Splurge vs. Save: Bobbi Brown Buffing Grains and Mark Berry Grand

Besides having a thing for lip stains and highlighters, I also love exfoliators. When Bobbi Brown Buffing Grains for the Face came out, I thought it was genius. What a unique concept to add exfoliation to a cleanser you already love, plus the ability to control how much or how little exfoliation you get from it. I was sold but I was not happy about the $40 price tag for what is really just grains. When I came across these Mark Berry Grand Super Exfoliating Beads on the Mark website, I thought I had just found a replacement at a fraction of the cost for roughly the same amount.

The main difference between these two products beside the price tag is the texture of the grain in each jar. Bobbi Brown’s is not quite as thick as Mark’s, it consists of Japanese adzuki bean powder to help get rid of dry patches while Mark’s has cranberry and pomegranate sees along with apricot seed and rice powder. Mark’s has some chunkier grains in it but it also has the fine powder that Bobbi Brown’s has as well. Perhaps it is a different caliber of ingredients in each product but both are effective at exfoliating skin without being harsh or abrasive, the grains are not thick or sharp enough to do that. In my testing, I didn’t see anything that made one product better than the other.

I’ve certainly caved on my share of more expensive products when a cheaper dupe was available, but sometimes it just comes down to which brand you prefer or trust more. I am a sucker for packaging though and have to admit that Bobbi’s jar looks rather sleek on my bathroom counter. Mark’s container has handy function though, like some of its makeup, it  “hooks up” to the tops of their cleansers. If you already use them, I admire your available bathroom counter space! :)

New! Bobbi Brown Peony & Python Palette

Bobbi Brown’s soon-to-be released Peony & Python collection is a bit punk rock meets princess.  The limited-edition Peony & Python Palette is inspired by the playful yet feminine chic of cult-label Tibi, and was used to create the looks at the Spring 2011 Tibi show.

When you unzip the palette, you’ll find six perfectly paired eyeshadows and two mini-brushes. I absolutely love these colors for spring, and was thrilled to see the lightest shade was not Navajo or Ivory! There is a good mix of metallic and matte, and the neutrals in this palette are so well-done.
