Benefit Adds Three News Shades of Bo-ing Concealer

Benefit’s Boi-ng Concealer is one of the first items I tried from the product line. Ahh, memories. I’ve always found a good match with shade two, light-medium, and I’m kind of a pale chick. With only two shades available, so many of you have been shut out of the Boi-ng market before you could even get in it. But not anymore. Benefit has smartly added three new colors, ranging from 3 (medium), 4 (medium/deep) to 5 (deep).

This concealer is heavier (it’s not called industrial strength for nothing!) and works great to conceal blemishes, dark spots and other flaws. I like to apply directly with my fingers (clean hands when dabbing in the pot!) because the warmth of my fingertips helps blend and cover really naturally. To my not so fair ladies out there, congrats on the new concealer opportunity waiting for you with Boi-ing!

Products on a Pedestal, February 2012

Products on a Pedestal is our version of a monthly favorites recap. The products that especially rocked the makeup bag and caught our attention. Last month, Kayla shared her favs. This month, I’ll share mine.

Every brand that is not YSL wants to have a Touch Eclat. Some come close, others not so much. For the price, Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer is perhaps the best budget option I’ve encountered yet. The color ‘Radiant’ has just enough pink in it and does a good job concealing and diffusing.

What a nice surprise! Versace Yellow Diamond is so fresh and floral. I definitely enjoyed wearing this all month, and it is getting me in a spring state of mind. The base is amber and musk but it’s a very sheer scent with tons of floral and a touch of fruit (lemon and pear). Also, I LOVE the big yellow diamond cap.

A bright pink cheek feels so appropriate in the winter. And NARS Gaiety Blush is the perfect pink. The bright hue totally awakens the face. I love that it is matte, so I can wear it that way or layer with a highlighter for more glow.

My wear with everything gloss this month was Tarte’s Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Gloss in Glisten. It’s a peachy nude, so it goes with everything and I remain enchanted by the floral tube. Can you tell I’m excited for spring?!

Benefit Instant Brow Pencil in shade medium helps bring natural fullness to my brows. I love how I barely have to press the pencil to my brows to get the effect I’m after. The spoolie on the other end is so convenient, too, and helps pull my entire look together in 3 seconds.

What products were you all about this past month? Let’s chat about it in the comments!

Benefit Sun Beam: Spring Break (the sophisticated kind) in a Bottle

Normally during this point of the winter season, I’m desperately seeking sun and booking trips to Florida. This year, though, I don’t know. I’m sure winter will wear me down eventually, but for 8 days into February, I feel damn good.  You could say my barely there case of the winter blues is easily fixed by Benefit Sun Beam, a.k.a. liquid sunshine. They’ve billed it as that, and while it doesn’t warm me up like the sun, it gives my skin warmth that mimics the sun.

Consider Sun Beam your early Spring Break in a bottle, except not the young, messy, sloshy kind. Rather, the sophisticated version. The kind that involves poolside magazine reading, yoga at dusk, daily spa treatments and just the right amount of champagne.

L-R: Benefit Sun Beam, Girl Meets Pearl, Watt's Up

Sun Beam and its light bronzey hue reminded me a little bit of Girl Meets Pearl, so I decided to compare them and see how they fared. There’s no denying the similarities, which explains why I love it so much (GMP is a fave in our camp!), but Sun Beam is a slightly deeper bronze that leans a little more warm and brassy. The consistency is also slightly different, although both blend like dreams. As for Watt’s Up, I wanted you to see how Sun Beam looked next to that lovely rosy gold cream to powder highlighter.

On my fair-ish skin, Sun Beam is just the right amount of bronzy highlight. It’s one of those work for everyone shades, I think. If you’re seeking an early spring break, you know where to look.

Products on a Pedestal for January 2012

It’s a new year and us gals here at Product Girl decided to introduce a new monthly feature dishing on our favorite products from makeup, skin care, hair, and anything in between. We call it “Products on a Pedestal.”  If you’re like me and love hearing people’s favs, check in at the end of every month to get the scoop. I’m kicking off the first edition!

To start, my favorite blush.  Is it possible to talk too much about a single product?  Tarte Amazonian Clay blushes are just so good! We’ve yet really talk about the color Exposed, though. It’s such a unique tan, plum color. My everyday, perfect blush.

A new obsession for me is highlighters (following in the footsteps of my sister and Laurie!) Current favorite? TheBalm’s Mary-Lou Manizer, such a cute name! The champagne shimmer is suitable for cheeks and eyes.

Now, since it is winter, had to mention my moisturizer. I’ve been using Benefit Total Moisture Facial Cream and let me tell you, ahh-mazing!! It smells incredible, doesn’t feel greasy and makes my skin so soft. It also isn’t too much for my oilier skin.

Mascaras are an obsession of mine, so I had to include one. I’ve been head over heels for the Tarte Gifted Mascara. That’s exactly what it is, gifted. Does it all – lengthening, separation and volume in just one coat. Hardly any mascaras are up to my liking with one coat! Clump and flake free, this is something to talk about.

Undereye circles are something pretty much every woman faces at some point. As a teenager up late at night studying and chatting with friends, waking up in the morning is not my favorite thing. But when I need a pick me up, I reach for my Garnier Skin Renew Anti Dark Circle Roller. Roll on a bit, blend, and I’m instantly (looking) more awake with laser sight!

Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen WOW Foundation is Worthy of its Name

WOW. I uttered this simple, yet powerful, word on many occasions in the last day. Wow, is it really 60 degrees outside in JANUARY? Wow, is this Shrimp and Corn Chowder soup from Chicago Organics the best thing I’ve eaten all week?  Wow, is this Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen WOW Foundation all sorts of awesome? Yes, definitely and COMPLETELY.

Benefit needed a foundation in the line, and did they ever do it right. It lives somewhere between a foundation and a tinted moisturizer, and the texture is more liquid than cream. I love putting this on my face. Wow! It really feels great. But there’s more behind the “WOW” than just the expression. Benefit’s “Oxygen Wow Hydrating Complex” is what makes this brightening foundation uniquely theirs. It helps boost cellular respiration for a “plumping up” effect and contains vitamins C & E derivatives known to prevent signs of aging.

Also, the pump is genius. Never underestimate the power of a perfect pump. One single press down and out comes the perfect amount to cover your entire face. No more, no less.

Benefit’s Oxygen WOW launches in March, but Maggie and Annie of Benefit will be demoing Oxygen WOW on HSN February 2 at 3 a.m., 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. (all times EST). The foundation will run you $34, and if you purchase on HSN February 2, you’ll also get $5 off Benefit’s Hello Flawless powder, which is available in complementary shades of the same name.

Get in on the WOW early and often. Hint: it’s available for sale now here!

What's New in Beauty: Benefit Sun Beam, Leila Lou Eau de Parfum and The BEACHWAVER

Liquid sunshine? Sign me up for Benefit’s just-launched Sun Beam. They recommend pairing it with Hoola bronzer for a brilliant golden look.

It’s here….the Leila Lou Eau de Parfum. The fresh fragrance we all know and looove by Rosie Jane is now available in a lighter version of the Leila Lou scented oil. Look for familiar notes of pear, fresh cut grass and tangerine.

The BEACHWAVER by celebrity hair stylist Sarah Potempa is launching on QVC today in the 2pm est. and 9pm est. hours. We are very curious about this – the auto rotate feature and the ability to customize for the left and right sides of your hair. [QVC]

Kate Beckinsale stunned at the Underworld premiere earlier this week. Makeup artist Molly Stern created a radiant look for Kate using Laura Mercier. She used one of our new obsessions, the Laura Mercier Radiance Foundation Primer, to get the look.

Beauty VIP of the Week: Benefit Hervana

Bliss by blush? Totally possible, especially with Benefit Hervana. Benefit’s newest box ‘o powder is truly a heavenly blend of shell, peach, rose and berry. While I normally can’t get enough of rosy cheeks this time of year, the orchid hue of Hervana is so alluring. It’s more pink than not, but the purple tones make it stand out from traditional pink shades.

Wearing Hervana

I love the satin finish, and how I can build up the intensity on my cheeks. Whether Hervana is barely there or brazen, it is flattering and face-framing. Plus, it goes great with my dominantly grey and neutral wardrobe. It’s this week’s Beauty VIP, and a welcome addition to Benefit’s already amazing line of face powders. Now, the next step, to take Emily’s advice and inject some color into the wardrobe…

Product Girl's Top 11 of 2011

Narrowing down the best beauty releases of the year can be a daunting task. But when it comes down to choosing the best of the best, all we really had to do was look in our makeup bags and on our bathroom counters. From there, it was pretty clear what products we can’t live without and will happily  carry into the New Year. Without further ado, we present to you the Product Girl Top 11 of 2011.

While this list is officially in no particularly order, NARS Velvet Gloss Pencil is definitely our favorite lip product of the year. We can’t get enough of these. Frivolous and New Lover are my top two, but the deep raspberry of Baroque is a close third. We absolutely love how these look and feel on the lips – the subtle gloss, burst of color and moisturizing properties make them a major winner.

We purchased countless tubes of Burts’s Bees Tinted Lip Balms this year. For ourselves and for others. The Rose is the perfect tint of sheer red, and Honeysuckle is a lovely peachy nude. The formula is 100% natural and the price, at $7, is just right. These are a standout drugstore buy of 2011.

We continue to be mesmerized by this seafoam green tub of youth! Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica is such an  interesting moisturizier. It’s thick in texture, very balm-like, but doesn’t feel like it on the skin, and seems to instantly make our skin look brighter and healthier. Plus, we love the way Rosa Arctica looks on our bathroom counter!

Thank you, Dr. Dennis Gross, for reviving our pale skin and helping me fight my Vitamin D deficiency with the Alpha Beta Glow Pads. Since these launched in February, they’ve been a constant in my beauty routine. I don’t let actual sun rays get near my face, so these were a godsend. Unlike self-tanner, these are skin care. They give you a legit bronze and unleash anti-aging + exfoliating properties into your skin.

Perhaps the most difficult category for us to choose the “best of” was nail polish. But, Chanel Black Pearl managed to take home the honors. This gunmetal green is like an edgy accessory that goes with everything. It looked good no matter the season, and on fingers or toes.

Benefit Cha Cha Tint was worth waiting until 2011 for. It is a delicious mango-colored stain that looks intimidating in the bottle but is like magic on the skin. If you think you can’t wear coral, Cha Cha Tint can prove you wrong. Plus, it’s a stain so it lasts forever.

Another cheek product that dominated our makeup bags the majority of 2011 was Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush. We can’t pick just one favorite, so consider ALL of them the best of 2011. (Although, we might be partial to Amused and Tipsy!) They are the longest wearing powder blush you’ll ever use and the color stays vibrant all day. And the colors are phenomenal and importantly, flattering on the skin.

2011 will go down as the year the U.S. got a taste of the BB Cream. And we couldn’t be more smitten with Boscia’s B.B. Cream SPF 27 PA++, a skin perfecting “blemish balm” that is like a super-powered tinted moisturizer. It manages to blur out imperfections and moisturize our skin. In the summer, we could get away with using this for coverage, moisture and SPF!

A serum that actually helps repair and heal damaged hair and split ends? Yes, it exists.  The exotic oils and silk peptides in Phyto Phytokératine Serum  helps strengthen strands and restore moisture to dry hair (and is silicone-free). I truly believe that by slathering the ends of my hair in this, I can go a lot longer without a trim.

The central weapon in our fight against aging is sunscreen. It may not be the most exciting part of our beauty routine, but it’s very necessary. Skinceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense is the best facial SPF we’ve ever used. We like that it contains only physical blockers and a special extract that increases skin defenses and resistance to UV and heat stress. But the best part? It feels weightless on the skin.

Each month, we looked forward to the arrival of the pink Birchbox! What a treat – which is why this beauty delivery service deserves a spot in our best of 2011 list. We’ve been introduced to some great brands, like Sunday Riley and Oribe, and fabulous products, like Orofluido Elixir and Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensee.
