Product Girl Favorites of 2012

It’s time for a beauty year in review.  Trust us, picking just 10 favorites for an entire year was no easy feat. We discovered a plethora of new brands and fell in love with so much. These 10 favorites are the products we use constantly. The ones that really stand out and we would buy over and over again!

BECCA Bolero Mineral Blush is a flattering terracotta shade that doubles as a bronzer. It’s my perfect cheek.

This bright cobalt Essie Butler Please nail polish is stunning and a newer discovery!  I’m confident I will wear this constantly in 2013.

Every morning starts with a cup of coffee and One Love Organics Morning Glory serum. It contains a ton of antioxidant power and perk-up ingredients like peppermint oil.

Highlighters are a Product Girl’s best friend and we are partial to the pale bronzy gold Benefit Sun Beam.

Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pad for Body just make everything look and feel tighter and naturally tanned. Like an Rx for the Vitamin D deficient.

Hands down, my favorite shadow of 2012: NARS Vent Glace Duo Eyeshadow

Still mystified by the brightening powers of Bare Escentuals Well Rested Face & Eye Brightener.

Melvita Orange Blossom Extraordinary Water brings me to a happy place and is always step one in my skin care routine, day and night.

The perfect top knot achieved with Sarah Potempa The Wrap-Up. And low bun, messy undone bun, etc. It does it all and perfectly.

NARS Mexican Rose Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil is the longest wearing lip product I’ve ever worn (and it’s not technically a stain!) I always have a good day when wearing this gorgeous bright pink.

Any favorites you’d like to share? Let us know your thoughts on 2012 standout beauty!

Get the Gloss: Cassadee Pope on The Voice

While it took me well past the knockout rounds to truly appreciate The Voice’s Cassadee Pope, I’m a total fan girl now. She is everything I loved about 2002. Chunky highlights. Angsty girl music. At first I was all how much Avril do I want to hear, but now I’m all give me as much Kelly Clarkson, Michelle Branch and Natalie Imbruglia as you can possibly cram into a season.  Last night’s Faith Hill ‘Cry’ cover (watch and obsess) really just has me waiting for her album to come out.*  In true fan girl fashion, it also has me replicating Ms. Pope’s gorgeous, and not at all 2002, signature glossy nude lip. No official word on the actual color and brand, but my lips look exactly that shade with BECCA Ultimate Colour Gloss in Fallen Angel. It’s a perfectly balanced nude spice. Opt for the sparkly brown smokey eye ala Cassadee or pair it with a rosy cheek and swipe of liquid liner. It’s the nude gloss that looks good with any pairing and while belting out punk girl rock with a sometimes country twist.

Fan girl PSA: there are four songs on Spotify from Cassadee!

Brighter than Before, New BECCA Beach Tints

Lip and cheek stains tend to have a liquid consistency, which is exactly the opposite of why we we love BECCA Beach Tints.  Unlike its category counterparts, BECCA Beach Tints are creamy to touch and blend down dry on skin. They also smell subtly of the fruit they are named which is a nice bonus. These are somewhat of a cult favorite in our makeup bag. BECCA has the mystique of being a little difficult to find and it’s one of those brands worth tracking down. Trust. I live for the pinky nude Fig Beach Tint, but have to admit the three new shades: Lychee, Dragonfruit and Papaya, are all I want to wear lately. As you can see, this trio of Beach Tints are anything but nude. All three are vibrant and brightening, and their creamy consistency is what we’ve come to know and expect. Lychee is a wear your sunglasses bright hot pink whereas Dragronfruit is a medium bright poppy pink. And Papaya is a hot red orange that is brighter than it appears. Yes, that’s possible. Naturally, we love this shade.

And have you heard? BECCA is making its way to a Sephora near you. Already available on, BECCA will debut at a select few Sephora stores in 2012 (23 in total) with plans for more in 2013. Good news for those in smaller markets, as it appears it will also be in at least 50 Sephora in JCP locations in March with plans to expand into 150 locations by the end of next year.

Cheers to more BECCA and new Beach Tints!

Five Bronzers to Use All Summer

Happy Memorial Day! Hope you’ve all had a fabulous weekend. We’re taking a break from our holiday to report on one of the most important summer beauty topics, bronzer. We firmly believe that every woman needs a bronzer wardrobe for summer. No other beauty product gets as much mileage for me from now until Labor Day. Largely because the actual sun does not actually darken my skin — no, no, not going to let that happen. And I like options. Here are the five that are ruling my makeup bag this summer.

Beauty VIP of the Week: BECCA Dusty Rose Anniversary Palette

This week was cra-zay with a caps C. A trip to LA for work, late nights and lots of go-go-go. I needed something to be easy or I might completely have gone a little nuts. Really, I needed simplicity in my beauty routine. No brushes, no mess or fuss. Oh, and I needed it to make me look alive. The thing about travel and non-stop movement is that it strips the life out of my skin. Like, buh-bye well-rested and hydrated glow.

The product that did all of the above (and more)? BECCA Dusty Rose Anniversary Palette. A multi-tasking miracle that gives the covetable alive look that I so desperately needed. It’s one of two limited edition Anniversary Palettes released to commemorate 10 years of BECCA beauty (yay, congrats!) Dusty Rose has everything you need for cheeks, lips and eyes. Truly.

L-R: Cassini, Turkish Rose, Tuberose, Narcissus

Aren’t these colors just awesome?

  • Cassini, Lip Gloss, is a brightening peachy pink.
  • Turkish Rose, Crème Blush, a barely there rosy nude
  • Tuberose, Lip & Cheek Crème, coral pink
  • Crème Highlighter, Narcissus, a shimmery opal peach

Using this is easy as can be — like finger painting for adults. The highlighter is gorgeous on the brow bone, and even doubles as a great eyelid color. Oh and it’s super gorgeous on cheekbones. I even used it on my coworker who was traveling with me and I thought she looked like a supermodel. Turkish Rose looks deep and rosy in the pan but is super sheer. The dew it gives skin is unbeatable. That coupled with Narcissus is radiance at its best. The combinations are endless and effortless. It almost seems too easy, and that’s why this product is our Beauty VIP of the week.

Available where BECCA is sold and online for $36. Think of it as investment in your sanity.

BECCA Balearic Love Collection Makes the Grade

BECCA’s approach to spring/summer is sultry. When we first saw the Balearic Love Collection, we were intrigued by the color palette. Dark polish? Unexpected. Blush that doubles as bronzer? No-brainer. Pinky nude Lipstick? Gotta have it. New Eye Tint? Sign us up. Anytime there is a new tint from BECCA, be it Beach or Eye, we are excited. I have Carla to thank for my Becca tint obsession.

Sidebar. BECCA is now readily available in Chicago! Walgreens rolled out a new concept store with a Beauty Look Boutique (similar to the Duane Reades in New York) in the Loop and there’s an entire BECCA section.

L-R: Romanticism Eye Tint, Cabrera Line and Define, Bolero Mineral Blush, Valentina Lip Colour

A few weeks with the Balearic Love look, I’m ready to issue a report card.

Mineral Blush, Bolero ($32) BECCA’s blushes blow just about everyone away in the pigment department — seriously. Bolero is this awesome terracotta color that works as a blush or a contouring powder.  Love that it’s a nearly matte finish.

Grade: A

Eye Tint, Romanticism ($24) I’m not sure how BECCA does it, but these manage to be completely crease-proof. The mauve bronze color is beautiful. It takes a few layers to build it up to the intensity seen in the swatch, but wearing it as a base with the eye palette in the collection or a shade like NARS Lhasa brings out the color more.

Grade: A+

Line and Define Pencil, Cabrera ($25) Two liners are better than one, especially when it actually is one. Cabrera’s metallic bronze and deep violet go together like PB&J. I like to layer them together or wear the bronze on the lower lash line and the violet on the upper. I wish the texture were creamier, though.

Grade: B

Sheer Tint Lip Colour, Valentina ($24) These are some of the more moisturizing lipsticks I’ve used – with Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Honey and Vitamin E. Valentina is described as a nude pink, but it’s actually more of a sheer strawberry. I love the color, but it came as a surprise.

Grade: B

Nail Colour, Pasa Doble, Tempranillo, Cala Blanca ($15) It’s still a surprise to see BECCA doing polish, and I love it. These shades are an interesting take on spring/summer, but they are pretty. I might get more wear out of Pasa Doble and Tempranillo come fall, but Cala Blanca is a fab nude shade (featured here in a recent Mani Monday)

Grade: B

Just Another Mani Monday: BECCA Cala Blanca

Testing nude-toned nail polish is always so interesting. The thing with shades of skin polish is that you have to find one that is right for your skin tone or it can go all sorts of wrong. It’s a genuinely great feeling when you find one that is just right. For me, BECCA Cala Blanca, from the Balearic Love collection, is just right. Once I get my (faux) tan on, this will be my shade. It’s pretty close to perfection now, and I can’t wait to wear this on my toes, too! I like the monochromatic look on my toes because I think it makes my legs look longer. Short girls will take any edge we can get:)

Also, in addition to the lovely Cala Blanca, check out the greenery in the background. That’s the tree in my front yard, that normally blooms mid-April. Crazy, right? I love seeing all of the fresh growth, and will even suck up the early allergies I’m getting as a result. Hope everyone is having a good start to the week!

On Our Radar: BECCA Cosmetics Balearic Love Collection

Well, look what we have here. New BECCA! We think that BECCA collections are always so sultry, feminine and flattering. BECCA makes makeup for women. And we love that about the brand. With the new Balearic Love Collection, we’re invited to the islands. Let’s check it out.

Balearic Love Palette ($45; limited edition) Create rich, sensuous eyes in tones of bronzed plum and violet. Shades include: Atlas (demi-matt, mauve taupe); Romal (shimmer; bronze plum); Marcella (demi matt, deep bronze violet)

Eye Tint in Romanticism ($24) This delicate mauve-bronze, crème-to-powder tint can be worn alone or layered underneath the Balearic Love Palette for added depth and crease-proof colour.

Mineral Blush in Bolero ($32) This mineral complexion sculptor has pure mineral pigments and a natural demi-matte bronze tone, and can be used as a contouring powder and blush.

Nail Colour ($15) Three new shades join the line, in Pasa Doble (black plum); Tempranillo (wine red); and Cala Blanca (sandy nude, shown above)

Line and Define Pencil in Cabrera ($23) Metallic bronze on one end and deep violet on the other.

Sheer Tint Lip Colour in Valentina ($24) Sheer, hydrating creamy nude pink lipstick with subtle shine. Contains emollients such as shea butter, cocoa butter, honey and Vitamin E.

Just Another Mani Monday: Becca Dancing Barefoot

When we were at The Makeup Show in New York last week, we both zoned in on the Becca Halcyon Days display and did a double take. Becca and nail polish? To what do we owe this fabulous surprise?! We were beyond jazzed to connect with the ladies at Becca — and Carla especially was jonesing for the new Beach Tint in Gauva, also part of the Halcyon Days Collection for Summer — but add a twist of three perfect for summer nail colors and we were thrilled.

I was immediately drawn to Dancing Barefoot, shown above on my nails. It’s an apricot nude that indoors gives me neon vibes. I’m fairly (self) tan (for me) right now, and this color looks amazing on. I love that it embodies the summer season without being brash and bold. The other two shades, Tangerine Dream and Summerdayze are equally beautiful. They feel very Becca — alluring and soft.

I applied three coats of Dancing Barefoot to give more of an opaque finish. I was impressed with the dry time, usually if I go for three coats it’s a recipe for denting and smearing. Hopefully many more Becca polishes are in-store for the future, because these are top-notch!
