Holiday Gift Guide: The Eco Girl

Our holiday gift guides continue with green beauty goodies perfect for The Eco Girl. These natural and organic options are all pampering and earth-friendly. The Eco Girl gift guide is a really special one for us. This year, we discovered so many amazing brands and products that have totally changed our skincare and beauty routines around in the best possible way.  And all of The Eco Girl picks come from brands that are made by passionate women who are truly inspiring.

Talk about passion and heart. The ladies at La Bella Figura have traveled the world to discover exotic ingredients and use them to make the most eco-luxe skincare evah. The La Bella Figura Holiday Healing and Glow Kit is such an amazing gift. You get a little bit of everything with it — facial steam teas, the Bio Active Healing Mask, Barbary Fig Renewal Serum (thank you LBF for intro-ing this phenom ingredient!), a sample set of their fragrance oils and that chic chevron bag to tote it all in.

Team Product Girl had the delight of meeting Maureen Kelly in New York last year and it felt like we were reuniting with a gal pal we’d known forever. One with insane business savvy.  How is that everything Tarte puts out is a must-have?  Like this Tarte Lash Curler & Mascara set in that adorable ikat print. It’s more than cute — the curler is high quality (I prefer it to most others…even the Shu)

Next to sunscreen, RMS Beauty Living Luminizer is one of those products we’d take to a desert island. This is the highlighter that Victoria’s Secret models use! The gorgeous woman behind this brand, Rose-Marie Swift, uses this often on Gisele and Miranda. It puts most other highlighters to shame. Try this yourself, then pay it forward to The Eco Girl on your list.

We are obsessing over the One Love Organics Comfort and Joy set (exclusive to Birchbox). Does it get better than a duo of body serums made with organic plant oils in Lavender and Neroli scents? We first fell in love with One Love after President Suzanne LeRoux kindly introduced us to the line last year. The Skin Savior Balm had us hooked from day one and now we can’t get enough of the line. This set is the perfect way to share the (one) love.

Going sulfate free was a game changer for my hair and one of my favorite new discoveries is Acure Organics Morocccan Argan Oil + Argan Stem Cell Shampoo and Conditioner, made for gifting with this Acure Organics Healthy Hair Gift Set. It is one of the best smells I’ve ever encountered and it totally revitalizes hair. The Eco Girl will appreciate this duo and the fact that brand, founded by Kristy Guerra as a way to honor her grandmother who battled breast cancer, donates proceeds of each product sold to breast cancer research. This line is literally for a cure.

Ilia Beauty founder Sasha Plavsic is on a mission to change your mind about organic makeup. A designer by trade, she founded the line after evaluating her makeup bag one day and decided organic beauty could use a rebrand of its own — better packaging, performance and contemporary colors. We say success has been achieved because Ilia Beauty Lipstick is phenomenal. The colors are wearable and fresh, the formula good for you (and performs better than most non-natural offerings) and the packaging streamlined. Introduce The Eco Girl to a tube of Ilia and a happy holiday it will be.

Product Girl Green Guide: Eco-Friendly Skin Care

With Earth Day right around the corner, Sunday, April 22, now seems like the natural time to share our top picks in eco beauty. All week long, we’ll be sharing our green recommendations in makeup, shower staples, skin care and more. Today, we’re sharing the eco-friendly skin care products we can’t be without. Read on for lots of plant extracts, oils and the most brilliant multitasking balms and creams.

1. Acure Facial Cleansing Crème, Olive + Mint. This creamy cleanser helps encourage new cell growth and actually helps you look younger. Literally, with each use, you are washing away worry lines! Organic acai berry, fair trade organic olive oil and Organic Chorella Growth Factor (to boost collagen…a.k.a. younger-looking skin!) are the star players. The cleanser is a fresh minty green color, and the smell is naturally sweet. ($14.99, Acure Organics)

2. SIA Botanics Blueberry Oxygenating Exfoliator. This brand recently popped up on our radar. All of SIA’s products are grounded in botanical bases and do wonders for damaged skin, blemish-prone, dull, dry, YOU NAME IT! The oxygenating action comes from jojoba beads which exfoliate the skin so gently you hardly know it’s happening. Blueberries and cranberries offer a surge of antioxidant power and olive and hibiscus are on standby to decongest pores. ($20, SiaBotanics)

3. La Fresh Waterproof Makeup Remover Wipes. La Fresh has a wipe for everything (and everyone!) — nail polish remover, insect repellant, body refresher, deodorant, puppy dogs, etc. We love the Makeup Remover Wipes and how they easily break down stubborn eye and lip makeup. They contain zero alcohol and no artificial fragrance or parabens. Look for a six oil blend of olive, jojoba, sesame, grapeseed, vitamin E and lavender. The lavender scent is very soothing at the end of a long day. True story.  ($9.99 for 24, La Fresh)

4. Weleda Skin Food. One of the best skin care products, ever. It can be used on dry hands, elbows and even your face. I even use it as a highlighter on my face as it gives a believable, natural dewy look to the skin. Organic pansy extract, known to be a mild antiseptic, calms irritation and essential fatty acids, vitamin E and organic sunflower seed oil heal the skin as well. It’s like a garden. It’s also super affordable and lasts a very long time. ($11.50, Weleda)

5. TAY All-Purpose Shea Butter. We live for a good shea cream. And Tay’s is about as pure as it gets. Organically harvested shea butter, from the Women’s Coop in West Africa, is infused with USDA Organic rosemary essential oil to create a truly aromatherapeutic cream. The scent is earthy and the benefits plentiful: hydrates skin and scalp, doubles as a hair styling aid and works wonders on ragged cuticles. The engraved wood packaging is also so unique. We love this! ($28, TAY Everyday)

6. One Love Organics Skin Savior Balm. Balms are a gift to the skin, and to those who never have enough time in the day. Pure, cold-pressed plant oils do the job of cleansing your skin and moisturizing it. The old oil breaks down oil story – it’s legit and this stuff works! Skin Savior is a precious organic blend of coconut oil, sweet soy seed oil, beeswax, mango seed butter, chia seed extract and more. We love to use this on our face, but also massage this in to the skin – anywhere head-to-toe – for an extra dose of pampering. ($68, One Love Organics)

7. Stark Skincare Green Tea Detox Clay Mask. By now, we’re all familiar with the “just add water” exfoliator, right? A brilliant idea that Stark takes one step further with a “just add water” mask. It’s a gentle, but powerful, blend of clay, green tea and fruit extracts that leaves skin brighter and cleaner after just one use. Green tea helps repair damage done by the sun and pollution and the mineral-rich clays remove impurities from the pores and improve skin’s clarity. The apple extract contains alpha hydroxy acid to gently exfoliate and improve skin elasticity. All of this in a POWDER! ($30, Stark Skincare)

Product Girl Green Guide: Eco Bath & Body Picks

With Earth Day right around the corner, Sunday, April 22, now seems like the natural time to share our top picks in eco beauty. All week long, we’ll be sharing our green recommendations in makeup, shower staples, skin care and more. Today, we’re kicking off with eco-friendly options for bath and body. Read on to find out about “curoxidants,” the best body scrub I’ve ever used and a cleanser you need for your shower.

1. Acure Energizing Body Lotion in Mandarin Orange + Mango. This zesty vegan moisturizer uses Fair Trade Certified ingredients and for every bottle bought, one tree is planted. This good for you and the planet moisturizer includes Acure’s signature “Curoxidant Blend” of five certified organic superfruits and herbs: acai, pomegranate, blackberry, rosehips and rooibos. ($9.99, Acure Organics)

2. J.R. Watkins Naturals Grapefruit Sugar & Shea Scrub. In full disclosure, I am a proud member of the PR team for this brand. I am obsessed with every single Grapefruit product they sell (home + personal care!) but this scrub takes the cake. The sugar and shea oils are perfectly blended in the tube (no annoying separation like so many other sugar scrubs, wahoo!) and they melt into the skin both shedding dead skin and moisturizing at the same time. Also, it’s grapefruit. Need I say more?  ($13.99 J.R Watkins)

3. Suki Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser. This one is a shower staple. Sugars and lemongrass extract work to unclog pores, smooth and resurface skin. Rub a nickel size in your hands to break down the sugar a bit and you’ll see it start to foam. Then massage gently into your face and it does the work for you. I have to resist the urge to use this every day (as the last time I did I had to go on an esthetician-mandated exfoliation diet!) ($30, Birchbox)

4. JASON Pure Natural Shampoo and Conditioner. (Super Shine Apricot and Long & Strong Jojoba) You may know JASON for its practically life sized bottles of body wash, but did you know the brand just re-launched its line of Shampoo and Conditioners? The Super Shine Apricot is a mix of organic botanicals, vegetable proteins and vitamins. Hair feels super clean and healthy…and smells great, too! ($7, JASON)

Beauty VIP of the Week: Dry Shampoo

The longer my hair gets, the less I want to wash it. Not only to protect the ends and keep it healthy, but goodness, to save time! It takes some serious work to get it cleansed, dried and styled. I wear it as a badge of honor how long I can go between washes. I’m currently at about 2-3, but hoping to get it to 3-4. I might actually be a little too excited about it, as my husband keeps telling to stop bragging about how “dirty” my hair is. Whatever, I think it’s awesome.

3 days (unwashed!) and going strong

All of this unwashed glory would not be possible without dry shampoo. I can’t be without it. I’ve been testing them religiously, and have become quite selective. I found some that only seem to reinforce the fact that my hair is unwashed and others that magically infuse new life into my strands for days. I wanted to share my VIP picks, in hopes you can start living the dirty hair life, too. It’s a life that involves cool shower caps and more sleep in the morning!

The scent of Lulu Organics Lavender + Clary Sage Hair Powder ($30) is unbeatable. Very herbal and soothing — I actually think in the process of absorbing excess scalp oil it also manages to relax me. It also gives my hair a nice texture. Rub a dab of this between your fingers and then massage into your scalp and brush hair. Easy and done!

This brand is new to my radar, but they seem to do it all, including hair. Acure Organics Argan Stem Cell + CoQ10 Dry Shampoo ($12.99) is another powder formula that, in addition to Argan and CoQ10, uses corn starch, white clay and essential oils of lavender and chamomile to cleanse hair. It has a very fine, almost silky, texture. I like this one on clean, “first day” hair sometimes as I think it seems to work invisibly. There is no trace of this in your hair, but it does a great job of absorbing oil.

I’ve reviewed Lush No Drought ($12.95) before, and it’s still a favorite. I have a thing for powder dry shampoos, obviously. I love how citrusy this one is, with lime and grapefruit.

If I’m going aerosol, it’s Batiste ($8.99) all the way. I really like the Blush version, but this Brit can is adorable, no? This gives me serious volume and is super convenient on the go. I stock up on this when it’s on sale at Ulta! It’s practically the only aerosol dry shampoo I will use. No weird texture issues to be had with this one, which makes it a standout.

Ruby Room + Exclusive Deal for Chicago Readers

One of the first places I discovered when moving to Chicago three years ago was the Ruby Room. It was affirmation that I’d moved to the right area! In a city with all of the big shops and department stores, it is so nice to have a sanctuary with niche brands (beauty + accessories) and spa and healing services. Actually, Ruby Room opened in 2002 as a healing center — putting a modern twist on ancient healing rituals. From there, it’s grown to a salon, spa, beauty boutique, yoga lounge and more.

Last weekend, I had the most amazing Ruby Room experience. I had the Acure Facial, one of their newest services and one that they exclusively offer. Jenifer, the esthetician that I saw, actually wrote the spa protocols for Acure and Ruby Room is the first spa in the country to debut the service. They carry the Acure Organics line as well, which we are really excited about! Everything is truly natural —the creators of the line actually grow a lot of their own ingredients—and super affordable (nothing is more than $30)

All Ruby Room spa services begin like a yoga practice: by setting your intention. You’ll select a card and there’s an accompanying Ruby Room Aroma Flower and Gem Essence filled with essential oils that is used throughout the service to keep your energy positive and clear. I selected ‘b Open’ and the Flower and Gem Essence included pure rose oil, my favorite.

The facial from Jenifer was like none other – a total mental cleanse and detox for the skin. It began with Acure’s Olive + Mint Facial Cleansing Crème, which might just be the best combination of ingredients. The smell of mint is invigorating! From there, Jenifer used Acure’s Brightening Facial Scrub and a blast of steam which felt fantastic. She also did a few manual extractions (NEVER do this at home!) on the stubborn “plugs” of buildup in my pores around my nose and forehead. The rest of the facial was pure bliss, especially the Acure Argan Oil massage. I definitely left there with an energized chakra and brighter skin.

Chicago readers, pay close attention! Ruby Room is offering Product Girl readers a special promotion during the month of March!

  • Take $20 off any 60-minute service* and receive a complimentary makeup touch-up. Just mention Product-Girl.com when you book the service!  I hope that some of you will take advantage of this. I highly recommend the Acure Facial (so new it’s not on their website yet!)

Also, for those not in Chicago, Ruby Room does a “weekly win it” on their Facebook page and the first week of March they will be giving away an Acure product! Their Facebook is also a lovely addition to my news feed, with their daily readings and messages of encouragement!

 *excludes colon-hydrotherapy

**Ruby Room provided spa services free-of-charge to me for review purposes. Al opinions are my own.
