When I want something, I will go anywhere I need to go in order to get it. Patience is not one of my virtues. I wouldn’t admit this to just anyone but since we have bonded over beauty products, I’ll tell you. After going to two other stores, I once drove 49 miles each way for an Armani foundation. I hunted down Valentina’s Home Brewed Pure Body Care Perfume Oil in True Love in much the same way over the course of the last few months.
Every time I would try to buy this perfume, every other fragrance would be in stock but True Love. It eluded me for months, and apparently a lot of other gals. It wasn’t until a random stop at Whole Foods on Christmas Eve for a centerpiece that I finally found it. We’ve been inseparable ever since. Isn’t that how it always goes? You find what you want when you least expect it. What I didn’t expect was how much I’d love the whole Valentina’s Home Brewed Pure Body Care line.
Stop the presses! My mind was blown this weekend when I discovered that the fine folks at Clarisonic were releasing a new tool, the Clarisonic Pedi Sonic Foot Transformation. I’ve struggled with dry, cracked heels for years now and I have tried almost every single foot file out there, even splurging on the infamous Dimancel files, and countless cracked heel creams. It wasn’t until I tried a prescription foot cream that I was finally able to gain the upper hand in my pedi situation. This tool piques my interest and gives me hope that I can keep the upper hand in my pedi situation. Good thing sandal weather is coming to a close!
The set retails for $199 and includes:
White Pedi Device
Pedi Smoothing Disc
Pedi Wet/Dry Buffing Brush Head
Pedi-Buff Sonic Foot Smoothing Treatment (6 oz.)
Pedi-Balm Sonic Foot Softening Treatment (3.5 oz.)
Pedi-Boost Sonic Foot Renewal Treatment (1 oz.)
USB-Enabled Universal Voltage pLink® Charger
The device has 3 speeds, an adjustable time and is safe for use in the shower or the bathtub. The device itself is intriguing but what I am interested in is the treatments. The smoothing treatment features lactic acid, the same ingredient found in some of my favorite foot creams, as well alpha hydroxy acids to help slough away dead skin. The softening treatment is all about hydrating those poor tired feet with shea butter, apricot oil and honey. The renewing peel treatment goes a step further to get rid of dead skin cells with a lactic and glycolic acid combo. This is all music to my ears, I kid you not.
Lip balm is the ultimate beauty gateway drug. You start out with lip balm, picking up every flavor imaginable along the way. Banana lip balm? Check. Chocolate lip balm? Double check. Then you start picking up tinted lip balms here and there and before you know it, you have 25 tinted balms that all give you the perfect “YLBB” (your lips but better) look because you can’t help yourself. The last stop on this lip balm train is exfoliation. You can wear lip balm all damn day, it still doesn’t mean you’ll have smooth, baby soft lips. You need a little help to get you there and these exfoliators are just what you need. Honestly, I still get a little giddy when I see a new one come out. I have to have it! I’m so obsessed, I’ve started making my own for fun, I’m a nerd.
With all of that said, there’s a line that completely understands our obsession with lip balm and lips in general; For Goodness Grape. Lisa, aka the Lip Balm Queen and founder, created the line because she loves lip balm and is passionate about natural ingredients. She started out on Etsy and sold over 8,000 items there but wanted to reach more people so she started her own website. Her Lip Survival Collection for Healthy Lips is a great way to see what For Goodness Grape is all about.
Body Oils have become one of my many new obsessions during my hiatus from Product Girl. I was never a body oil kind of girl, the idea of slathering myself in any kind of oil was completely unappealing… which is odd when I consider how much I love perfume oils! One day I was in a pinch and wanted a big dose of moisture to pamper my skin with and reached for a gift with purchase from the Jo Malone counter, my beloved Nectarine Blossom & Honey in Bath Oil form. I was instantly hooked and wondered why I didn’t try this before. It was one of those “D’oh!” moments.
Besides leaving my skin super soft and glowing, I realized that the scent that lingers on my skin long after the oil has absorbed lasts practically all day. I do not need to layer on any additional scents to get all day wear. I’ve been a hardcore layering girl for some time now so using one product to scent my skin was a revelation. And a nice added bonus? Using a body oil right before bed also scents your linens. I can’t tell you how much I love getting into bed at night now, I lay my head on my pillow and I can smell Amazing Grace on my sheets. Even doctor’s such as Dr. Angelo Cuzalina recommend oils at night because your body has the most time to fully absorb the moisturizing benefits with no chance of having it be washed/wiped off.
I’ve been a loyal body wash user for so long. Since I was a teenager and made a hobby of visiting the Bath & Body Works practically weekly. Juniper Breeze and Pearberry, anyone? I’ve had a penchant for all wash in a bottle, be it a gel, foam, cream, oil or mouse. It’s accurate to say I all but abandoned perhaps the most classic form of cleanser: a bar of soap. I think I’m making up for lost time. Bar soaps are all the rage in my shower and I have to say getting back to the traditional with body cleansing is a refreshing change in routine. Plus, the bar soaps of today seem so advanced to the drying white bars of my youth.
For those mornings when I just need to be alert, I opt for Molton Brown Re-charge Black Pepper Bodyscrub Bar. Black peppercorns srub away dead cells and the spicy blend of pepper and bergamot is invirograting. I take the time to really enjoy the aroma when I use this. The scent is unisex but be warned: if you buy this for the man in your life, you will end up stealing it back for yourself.
Natural body washes can be light on the lather (due to no sulfates) and sometimes leave you wanting a more thorough cleanse. But that’s not the case for a natural bar of soap. The vegan Metropolis Soap. Co artisan soaps have just a handful of ingredients, including shea butter so you know it’s moisturizing, and essential oils and detoxifying French clay. What I really love is the unexpected combinations and spa-like aromas that result. Plus, they’re under $10 and handmade in Brooklyn!
While I admit that its tempting to leave Fresh Citron de Vigne Soap in its gorgeous outer packaging, it’s just too good of scent not to indulge with during a hot shower. It gives me such a feeling of luxury and I’m addicted to the scent. It literally has notes of every scent I love — rose, grapefruit, neroli, pinot noir and amber. I find it brings me comfort in this cold weather.
We think that bar soap is in the middle of a major comeback, as evidenced by my newfound obsession. What do you think?
It’s Election Day and team Product Girl is urging you to get out there and exercise your right to vote! Whether you’re team “O-Bama Orange” or “Mint Romney” (according to Bliss’ eau-lection body lotions!), it’s important to be involved. And on the bright side, all of the political ads will be over come Wednesday. As someone who conducted exit polls for fun in college, I can’t wait to see the democratic process in action. My only gripe? I early voted and I didn’t get my sticker this year!
After getting a little taste of DIRT earlier this summer (literally), I have a new fondness for the luxury body care brand that also calls Chicago its home. DIRT scrubs don’t just exfoliate, they seem to help aid in obtaining that inner peace I seek at the end of long stressful days. The formulas are rich in natural food-y ingredients and leave skin glowing and moisturized. DIRT is worth the splurge. Which is why I’m giddy with excitement over DIRT’s brand new offering, Relax + Reign Mandarin Red Tea Salt Scrub.
DIRT orchestrated Relax + Reign to inspire balance and encourage meditation. It’s like yoga in scrub form, basically. The texture is slightly creamy with fine salt, orange peel, shea butter, vitamin E and essential and botanical oils, and it smells of mandarin red tea and ginger.
If Relax + Reign is what you seek, you can snag it for 20% off through Friday, October 26 at midnight with code YR2online. That code goes for all scrubs!

While I was in SF this week, I stopped in the Fresh boutique near our hotel. We have nearly everything in Chicago, but we don’t have a free-standing Fresh store. The experience of shopping in store at Fresh is far more luxurious than snagging my goods at the crowded Sephora. I spent about as much time in Fresh as my husband could bear (about 30 min!) I tested the new Rose Cleansing Foam (so rosey – I love it) and googly-eyed all of the holiday gift sets. And then I locked eyes on this sleek yellow tube of Fresh Seaberry Restorative Body Cream. A fan of the Seaberry in the pump bottle, this was an exciting surprise. While I love the bottle, it’s hard to get every last drop out. And when I splurge on a body cream, I want to be able to get every last drop. The smell of this is lovely — neutral but distinct. But it’s what this does to my skin that makes it this week’s Beauty VIP. The formula is so soothing thanks to the powerful antioxidant seabuckthorn oil, omega-rich cranberry seed oil and moisturizing sal seed butter. It’s a powerhouse moisturizer. And the pampering experience of shopping in a Fresh boutique goes unmatched. And worth noting, Fresh harnessed the amazingness of sea buckthorn oil into a new facial oil. It’s curently exclusive to Sephora – check it here.

Happy birthday, Fresh! The brand responsible for our beloved Sugar Lip Treatment and all thinks luxury in skincare is turning 21. In honor of the big b-day, Fresh teamed with artist and illustrator R. Nichols to create a series of limited edition Fresh 21 Oval Soaps in three iconic scents: Sugar, Patchouli and Hesperides Grapefruit.
These oval soaps are a special part of Fresh history. In 1991, Fresh founders Lev Glazman and Alina Roytbery launched the brand with this product. The 2012 version feature jazzy packaging and custom illustrations. Look for these this month for $15 each. We think they’d make for a great gift! for ourselves
