Back to Barely There: NARS Buenos Aires Velvet Gloss Pencil

If there’s one product to pull me out of the bright lip phase and back to barely there, you know it’s going to be the NARS Velvet Gloss Pencil. If you’re new here, we obsess over these pencils on the regular. It should come as no surprise that one of the must-have products from the NARS Summer 2012 collection is the Buenos Aires Velvet Gloss Pencil. A true nude, it’s the color I’ve been wanting in the Velvet Gloss line-up since its initial launch.

It’s got slightly peachy undertones, but it is a naked-y nude. I love it. The glossy texture gives it a fresh look on the lips. And while many nude lips give the corpse effect, Buenos Aires manages to bring a subtle vibrancy to my face. Don’t you think? I think it shows off my Luster blush perfectly (this blush obsession might last awhile). While I’m loving Buenos Aires in its pure state, it is also lovely layered over (or under!) other lip products. I especially like it mixed with NARS Bolero, last summer’s Velvet Matte beauty.

If you like your nudes a touch less naked, check out NARS Hopi. The Velvet Gloss Pencil is where it’s at, people!

Part Jewelry + Hair Accessory = Goody Double Wear

I’m a minimalist with accessories. Occasionally, I’ll wear a statement necklace or fun cocktail ring, but most days it’s a watch and hairtie around the wrist. Always a hairtie around the wrist. Which is why I’m absolutely loving the neck and wrist accessories from  Goody Double Wear that moonlight as jewelry. Part ponytail holder and/or headband depending on product and part accessory with a textured metal band. Did I fool you? They look like bracelets, right? I love piling them on, and of course, I still have my trusty Twistband on my wrist as well. You can never really have enough hair options on your wrist as a female. It’s like my security blanket!

What’s even more fun is the Goody Double Wear Headwrap Necklaces. They come as a duo, one silver and gold, and I wear these constantly. When my hair is tied back or when its down, too. And a lot of times, I have no intention of wearing them as anything but jewelry. In fact, I’m wearing them in this Revlon video that way.

These are a must on your next trip to Target!

P.S. The orange bracelet in the wrist shot is from Sasha Rhett. We are really excited about her line of bracelets and watches that come with interchangeable straps in varied textures and colors. Review to come soon!

GLOSSYBOX Launches in the U.S.

GLOSSYBOX,  available around the globe (19 countries to be precise), is now officially making its U.S. debut. We just got a glimpse of the inagural Americana box, and it is pretty darn cute. Glossybox had us with the cute pink box, global landmark tissue paper and that adorable Glossybox “hearts” USA ribbon. As for what’s inside, we were pretty pleased with the samples, too. The list of Glossybox global partners is impressive, ranging from Product Girl favorites like NARS and Laura Mercier to Dermalogica and Lancome.

Spotted in my Glossybox were six samples (you’ll always get at least five), including a polish from the OPI Holland collection, a deluxe C.O. Bigelow Lavender and Peppermint Shampoo, Cargo Eye Bronzer, Kryolan Lip Shine, Basq Cucumber Tea Eye Gel and samples of Erno Laszlo’s Hollywood-inspired creams. A really strong mix of deluxe and full-size.

But the but. There is a but. A monthly subscription to Glossybox carries a fee of $21. It’s a little on the high end as far as sampling goes, but from the looks of it, you get your dollars worth. Sign up at Glossybox.com.

The Must-Have Peter Thomas Roth Moisturizer + Giveaway

Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion AM Moisturizer SPF 30 keeps racking accolades, most recently from Dr. Oz who called it a “one-two punch” for looking young. What’s so special about PTR’s fusion? Well, typically, retinols are used in nighttime treatments as the powerful anti-aging ingredient makes your skin sensitive to sun.  PTR combats this by adding in SPF 30 to a special time release retinol solution to gradually deliver the ingredient over an eight-hour period. The result is improved skin renewal with less irritation.

What the man Oz loves, and so do we, is how this product is clinically proven to leave your complexion brighter. With regular use, up to a 48% improvement in skin smoothness, 35% improvement in skin tone and a reduction in pesky fine lines and wrinkles. It’s a no-fuss product that has a big payoff. It’s free of oil and fragrances, too.

And, bonus: we are giving away three bottles of PTR Retinol Fusion AM Moisturizer SPF 30. We’ll pick three winners at random at the end of day on Friday, May 11. To enter, leave a comment on this post. Extra chance to win if you tweet about it, too! Just let us know in the comments that you did so! Good luck!

Beauty Bites from a Vegas Vacation

After what may have been one of the craziest three month stretches I’ve ever had, a vacation was just what the doctor ordered. What better place to unwind and let loose at the same time than Vegas? We aren’t huge gamblers (though I proudly won $20 on the nickel slots!)  but give me a pool, desert heat, cold drinks and good food and I’m a happy camper. Here’s the Vegas rewind, from a beauty perspective!

Every vacation calls for a fresh mani. I opted for NARS Koliary, a stunning cyan blue from the brand’s Thakoon collab. Don’t you just want to go swimming in that nail polish?

I had every intention of reading Rob Lowe’s “Stories I Tell My Friends” poolside, but was so captivated by it I read it cover to cover on the plane! One of the best celeb memoirs (if not the best) I’ve ever read. His stories are amazing. Highly recommend.

Can you think of a better place to wear the top body bronzer used by celebs and makeup artists around the world than Vegas? Scott Barnes Body Bling was the perfect accessory at night, on my arms, décolleté and legs. While I was getting plenty of sun (and reapplying sunscreen every 45 minutes – those rays were intense!), Body Bling brought my tan to a whole new level.

I fell in love (again) with NARS Luster Blush. The perfect shimmery apricot that can almost double as a bronzer. In fact, it looks really good layered over a matte bronzer. I just cannot get enough of this, and wore it every single day in Vegas!

GoodeBox, Not Just Goode…but Great

Forget the goody bag, we’re all about the GoodeBox, a new sampling service with a sustainable focus. Each month, subscribers are treated to eco-friendly beauty and personal care products and the occasional natural and organic health product. Everything is good for you and the planet. The service launched in March, and judging by the box I received, it’s not just another box. The contents were curated by “green” celebrity makeup artist Kristen Arnett.

I was so thrilled to see Stark Skincare products in the GoodeBox. You may recall my obsession with this newly-launched line of skincare (here, here and here!) Other highlights include samples of Alima Pure Luminous Shimmer Blush and Powder, Clairvoyant Beauty skincare and a travel pack of Josie Maran Bear Naked Wipes.

Subscriptions are $16/month. We have a feeling there is a lot more GOODEness to come based on the amazing list of eco brands listed on their website. To name a few, Tata Harper, Revolution Organics and Weleda.

glassybaby Evelyn Candle Holder

On Monday night, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation held its annual Hot Pink Party. This event raises money for the charity but this year it also honored its founder Evelyn Lauder, who passed away last year. I thought it was only fitting to share this find with you, Nordstrom collaborated with local Seattle company glassybaby on this candle holder in honor of Evelyn Lauder and named it after her.

These glassybaby candle holders are a labor of love. It takes four artists, three layers of molten glass at 2,000 degrees to make just one candle holder. The result is a unique hand-made piece of art that gives off the most beautiful glow when lit. Here in Seattle, we go crazy for these babies. When glassybaby sells its “seconds”, people stand in line early in the morning just to be able to scoop some up on sale.

You can find these candle holders in stores now and online, each one retails for $44 with 10% from each Evelyn glassybaby being donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

What's in Her Makeup Bag with MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Jodi Risley

Meet Jodi, an Education and Artistry Executive for MAKE UP FOR EVER. She’s got more than   a decade in the makeup artist biz, and is pro at applying make up for on-air and for the every day woman. In fact, before she joined MUFE, she used to work for ABC News in Chicago as the show’s assistant makeup artist. Her philosophy is that make up is a necessary accessory that can help create a different mood or style. Amen, right?

I had a chance to sit down with Jodi last month and she worked her magic on me at a café! The most glamorous coffee date I’ve had in months. And informative, too. We had an extensive discussion on color matching and the brand’s HD foundation. Her advice come summer when your skin tone may darken? Add a drop of the HD Microperfecting Primer in Caramel to your HD Foundation to tint it a bit (and make it super smooth and long lasting!)

Jodi graciously let us peek into her makeup bag. Read on to find out her must have beauty essentials!

The Hip Hugger, saving you from the unfortunate "peek a booty"

Every lady has her secrets when it comes to beauty, but I feel it is our duty as women to help one another out. I practically hold weekly seminars at work shouting the best beauty products and secrets to getting a believable (faux) tan at a budget price (Jergen’s Natural Glow Express, always). But I’ve been keeping one secret to myself. It’s time to share.

Meet the Hip Hugger. Have you met this ingenious contraption before? It should come as no surprise that the brains behind the Hip Hugger are none other than Hollywood Fashion Secrets, makers of fashion tape and my personal favorite, the Velcro staps that make your pants look good in boots.

There is nothing worse than ill-fitting pants. I have a few pairs of jeans that infamously ride down or stretch and two clips of the Hip Hugger and BOOM! – fitting like a glove and not messing with the rest of my outfit situation. Flowy tops make this contraption that much more convenient, although, you can get away with wearing a more fitted top, too. The Hip Hugger at $8.99 sure beats an expensive tailoring bill.

And now you know my secret…. (so does TSA…I got wanded a few times because I forgot to take it off)
