Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eye Pencil + A Pretty Powerful Friends & Family Sale

Remember when we lost our marbles over the news of Bobbi Brown’s Long Wear eyeliners in pencil form? The joy was justified. They really do look and feel like the Gel version on the eye and they do what they say they’re going to do: WEAR for a really LONG time. From coffee to cocktails, natch.

Top L-R: Black Navy, Hunter, Mahogany. Bottom L-R: Black Plum, Jet, Smoke

In the circle of eyeliner preferences, we’re in the pencil-loving phase. They offer a convenience we can’t ignore. Aside from sharpening them (which you have to do with these every 4-5 uses) they are efficient from a time, use and wear perspective. Also? The colors are, to invoke her phrase, pretty powerful. I tested Jet, which is the blackest of blacks, and Mahogany, which is a perfect mix of deep brown and grey. I’m eyeing up Black Plum and Smoke, though, I love the mysterious shades. Is it black? Brown? How about grey? No? Purple?

Good news! Starting Monday, April 16, – Wednesday, April 18, Bobbi Brown will offer a 20% Friends & Family discount on If you’ve got the Long-Wear Eye Pencil bug or just need to stock up on the essentials, seize the day.

Beauty VIP of the Week: Stark Skincare Grapefruit Cleanse + Hydrate Balm

This balm is Balmalicious. Bad puns aside, Stark Skincare Grapefruit Cleanse & Hydrate Balm, GF for short, is kinda the bomb. I’m officially inaugurating GF into Beauty VIP territory. It’s a water-less balm (not unlike other VIP One Love Organics Skin Savior Balm) that does it all and does it flawlessly. Cleansing and hydrating your face, and even offering its services to dry elbows, lips, flyaway hairs and even post-shave.

Stark GF ingredients:  Shea Fruit Butter, Virgin Coconut Oil, Cocoa Seed Butter, Soybean Butter, Candelilla Wax, Camellia Seed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Arrowroot Powder, Orange Peel Wax, Vitamin E, pure essential oils.

One thing you should know about Stark Skincare is its belief in simplicity. The ingredients are few and powerful, and products in the line serve many purposes. This balm is a perfect example. The smell is HEAVENLY. The grapefruit is prominent and it also slightly smells of vanilla, to my nose. It brings me to good places when I just SMELL the product. Which I’m doing right this second as I type this. Truthfully, I can’t decide if I want to eat this or put it on my face.

Grapefruit is having a serious moment right now. It’s the citrus “it girl” right now. And grapefruit extract is a natural astringent, making it good for problematic skin and gentle enough for the sensitive types. Did I mention the smell? I did? Well…again, it is like therapy in a tub. Mine above is a cute little sample size, but I will be upgrading to the full 2 oz. version that comes in a beautiful glass jar that I plan to use and reuse because it’s just that cute.

While the conversation naturally gravitates to the most popular “it girl,” let’s not forget about the addition of shea butter (unprocessed in its most perfect state) and raw organic cocoa butter that together get all superpower-like on your skin. In comes virgin organic coconut oil to reduce puffiness and help rid skin of bacteria. The list goes on to include soybean butter (non GMO) to stimulate collagen production and a series of oils, namely organic camellia and sweet almond, to heal and help halt that inevitable process called aging.

No water. No fake anything. All awesome and good for you. The price is right too at $40.

I love massaging this in to my face to remove makeup (remove with a microfiber cloth – I use my OLO Skin Shammy!) and find it gets rid of everything and makes my skin smooth. The fun part is then using it as a moisturizer. I love a good two-fer and you won’t find many products that you can use to CLEANSE and HYDRATE skin. All-around, VIP!

To Curl or Not To Bedhead Curlipops Curl?

Sometimes we want things that aren’t necessarily in our best interests. An extra glass of wine when we’ve had enough. An extra bite of dessert when we’re beyond full. Hitting the snooze button when we’re already running late. But we do it anyway, right? That’s sort of how I feel about the new Bed Head® Curlipops™ curling irons. They are so enticing, like candy (minus the calories, thankfully), and their unique barrel shapes help create fun texture, loose curls and waves.

First, the options.

1” Tourmaline Ceramic Reverse Conical Styling Iron (blue raspberry color) – Creates tight curls at the roots and looser curls towards the bottom.

1” Tourmaline Ceramic Hourglass Styling Iron (candy apple red color) With this you can have both with loose curls and the ends and tight curls in the middle. Lots of volume!

1” Tourmaline Ceramic Styling Iron ((tangerine color) This wand is a more “traditional” shape — loose or tight curls, your choice!

I like these. But here’s the thing. I’m scared of them. These are not what you would call for beginners with clipless irons. I’m actually questioning it as an “experienced” clipless curler. I know….because I’m currently sporting a perfect circular burn on my inner arm. There is no protective tip at the end — it’s HOT. There is a glove, yes. But my accident occurred because I bumped the iron with my hip while reaching for something and it pivoted left and hit the arm that was reaching. But, you guys. Imagine if I did that to my face or neck or hand?! Ahh!

For what it is worth, the Curlipops do create some amazing curls. I used the Hourglass wand and aside from this wicked burn, I really like the waves. Just know what you’re getting yourself into with these and BE careful.

Playtime! Stila Smudge Crayons

I am in my heart still that little girl that loved coloring with crayons and getting new notebooks and pens. Which is why Stila’s Smudge Crayons are the coolest thing on the makeup block right now. They bring out the tween in me (which was not even officially a term when I was one!)

Stila does eye makeup really well. They consistently release top notch products. Think about just the smudging alone: Smudge Pots, Smudge Sticks and now the Smudge Crayon. It’s everything in a pencil: gel-based primer, shadow and liner. Indulging the 11-year old in me is a bit of “playtime” with each use, as in about 45 seconds to smudge around the lid before it sets. And once it does, it’s waterproof and crease-resistant.

L-R: Rose, Pink Violet

The shades span the spectrum with a jet black and gorgeous navy blue, but I’m especially partial to the pink shades Pink Violet and Rose. Of course I’m going for the girliest shades in the Stila Smudge Crayon box! Both have a pretty pearly finish and I can’t resist smudging them all over the lid. The best part is they last for like 100 years on the lid (that might be an over-dramatization).

Beauty Radar: NARS Summer 2012

Hello friends! Have you heard? NARS Summer collection is coming soon. April 15 to be precise. Have you also heard? It’s really pretty. NARS always surprises us with the non-traditional. We heart the man and the upcoming summer collection. Let’s take a closer look.

Summer brings with it a cocktail of warm earth tones and brazen shimmers. Eyes glisten in icy peach and matte apricot, or shine in iridescent orchid and blue. Lips are subtle in a glossy nude beige pink, or bold in matte strawberry red. A delicate seashell pink lends nails a flattering hue for an overall look that’s sizzling, sophisticated and—like so many summery moments—simply unforgettable.

Ramatuelle Trio Eyeshadow ($45, limited edition) Named for a village in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of southeastern France, Ramatuelle combines two shimmers—silver and icy peach—with a matte apricot. All about this one. I love the mix of colors.

Marie-Galante Duo Eyeshadow ($34) Named for the Caribbean island in the Guadeloupean archipelago, this duo combines an iridescent orchid and regal blue. Interested to see how these colors translate on the lids. Could be really dynamic.

Calabria Soft Touch Shadow Pencil ($24) A pretty shimmering plum named for the region south of Naples at the “toe” of the Italian Peninsula. These pencils are hit or miss for us. Goddess is really the only one that we love.

Liberté Blush ($28) Order up! Liberté translates to “freedom” in French, and this blush is a stunning apricot.

Vendanges Lipstick ($24) The French word for “harvest” or “vintage” perfectly describes this sheer grape Lipstick.

Moscow Pure Matte Lipstick ($25) Lots of textures and finishes to choose from in this collection with the lips. Moscow is a striking strawberry red.

Buenos Aires Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil ($24) Another Velvet Gloss Pencil. To what do I owe the pleasure? This one is a nude beige pink named for the capital of Argentina.

Never Say Never Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($24) Pretty sure Francois was not channeling Justin Bieber with this, but it’s all I can think of! As my friend says, Never Say Never is one of the best workout songs. Try it. Back to the product. It’s a lilac rose. We like the NARS take on “Never Say Never” too!

Trouville Nail Polish ($18) Seashells, seashells by the sea shore. Trouville and its pinky seashell hue would look right at home on the beaches of the fishing village it’s named for: the Basse-Normandie region of northwestern France.

A Sticky Subject: Deodorant

Deodorant, while not the most talked about topic here on Product Girl, happens to be one that we take seriously. For me, I’m trying to go natural. There’s been a lot of trial and error on these (underarm) parts. The best I’ve found is Lavanilla’s Healthy Deodorant. But it doesn’t totally keep you dry…and I need to be dry. Or I need to get over the need. The perils of a natural-seeking girl.  For now, I’ve accepted the anti-perspirant. But I’m quite selective. One that is worth talking about is Dove Clear Tone Deodorant. It’s what you’d call an invisible solid, so not actually clear in that sense, but it is designed to reduce red and dark marks under the arm and even skin tone.

Warmer weather = more shaving (unless you’re TRIA-ing!) which can cause the delicate skin under there to lose 50 percent more moisture than it normally would. If you’re a woman, chances are you have (or at some time have) darker patches in the pits. Dove Clear Tone works to speed up the skin renewal process with the help of Calendula and Sunflower Seed Extracts.

Also, the obvious benefit is the perk of dryness. It also in a clinical protection for those that need a little extra protection (something I totally needed when I lived in Washington, DC!) Two Clear Tone scents available: Sheer Touch and Skin Renew. I’m partial to the former and its citrusy scent with touches of almond and coconut milk.

Win It: Tone Fruit Peel Body Wash

If you’re not exfoliating your body, you are missing an essential step in skin care. And I don’t mean using a grainy, physical exfoliator (though, those are good to have, too), but rather FRUIT. Fruit and its Alpha-Hydroxy Fruit Acids help slough off dead skin like a champ. The new Tone Fruit Peel Daily Exfoliating Body Wash with aforementioned AHAs has an amazing blend of apple, kiwi, citrus and Vitamin E to gently exfoliate your skin. It works incognito, since the body wash is a smooth formula, but trust, those fruit acids are working to shed your winter skin. Also, it feels refreshing and smells delicious. Almost good enough to add to a blender for a citrusy smoothie (but don’t…)

We’ve teamed with Tone to give away one (1) Tone Fruit Peel Package, including:

  • Tone Fruit Peel Daily Exfoliating Body Wash
  • Canvas Market Tote
  • Spa Accessories
  • $50 Visa Gift Card

To enter, leave a comment on this post! You can talk exfoliation, fruit, ANYTHING. Let us know your thoughts. We’ll pick one winner end of day Friday, April 13.

May the fruit be with you.

Is it a Balm or a Lipstick? Or Both? MAKE UP FOR EVER Rouge Artist Natural

I think the phrase “go big or go home” applies to Make Up For Ever. When they create something new, they really do it. The brand spanking new MUFE Rouge Artist Natural lipsticks, for example, in 50 shades. That’s right. FIFTY. Sephora currently carries 18 of them. You may recall the Rouge Artist Intense Lipsticks, full of intense color and pigment. Well, the Rouge Artist Natural is a more subdued version. Almost like a balm. The texture is lightweight and shiny. I usually think color intensity when I think Make Up For Ever, so this is a really nice surprise.

What else do these balmy lipsticks boast? Cuapacu Butter, which is rich in essential fatty acids, and Candelilla and Beeswax. Three finishes in total: satin, iridescent and diamond with colors ranging from the palest nude to the deepest berry. I tested the lightest and the darkest, plus a few in-between. And I’ve got to be real… I totally love them. They are the perfect marriage of balm and lipstick.

#50, #9, #1, #31, #34

#N50, Aubergine: The deepest shade in the line. In the tube it looks like a chocolate berry but it doesn’t translate that dark on the lips.

#N9, Copper Pink: Because of the brown hues, this one looks a tad 90s in the tube but reads current on the lips. It’s a total “my lips but better” shade.

#N1, Iridescent Nude: The lightest shade in the spectrum, this goes on very sheer. It’s got a healthy dose of shine, too!

#N31, Soft Fuchsia: Bright but not scary. If you want to wear the bright lips but fear them (it’s OK if you do!), this is what you should be trying.

#N34, Candy Pink: I think this is my favorite. It’s brightening but subtle. I can’t get enough of the texture.

Available now. $19 apiece.

MAC Reel Sexy: The Lipstick

MAC’s spring collections, three in total that launched April 5, are kind of awesome. Reel Sexy and its bright colors are speaking to us. Especially the namesake item of the collection, Reel Sexy Lipstick. It’s a light bright coral in an amplified finish. Light bright may seem like an oxymoron, but it’s right on. Reel Sexy is a subdued coral, almost peach that straddles the line between bright and light peferctly. Not one to shy away from bright during the daytime, no, but with this I feel like I’m getting the best of both worlds.

Reel Sexy is sold out online at MAC, so if this color strikes your fancy, run don’t walk to your nearest counter.

A One Day Without Shoes Mani Monday: TOMS + Essie Barefoot in Blue

TOMS teamed with Essie on this special polish, Barefoot in Blue, to raise awareness of One Day Without Shoes. That day is tomorrow, April 10, and its purpose is simple: show the impact a single pair of shoes can have on a child’s life by taking off our own. I follow TOMS on Facebook and signed up to receive Essie Barefoot in Blue and then it showed up about a month later in the mailbox.  At first, I thought it was similar to Essie Smooth Sailing, but it’s shimmer-free and a lighter periwinkle. I love this shade, and it’s hard not to support the cause.

I love TOMS, and I bought my fanciest pair yet this weekend! The Rowan Wedge is exclusive to Neiman’s. The material is sturdier than the regular canvas and has a little shine, too. I am so excited to wear them — with shorts, skirts, jeans, everything!

If you want to get involved with One Day Without Shoes, check here to see how.
