Beauty VIP of the Week: Dry Shampoo

The longer my hair gets, the less I want to wash it. Not only to protect the ends and keep it healthy, but goodness, to save time! It takes some serious work to get it cleansed, dried and styled. I wear it as a badge of honor how long I can go between washes. I’m currently at about 2-3, but hoping to get it to 3-4. I might actually be a little too excited about it, as my husband keeps telling to stop bragging about how “dirty” my hair is. Whatever, I think it’s awesome.

3 days (unwashed!) and going strong

All of this unwashed glory would not be possible without dry shampoo. I can’t be without it. I’ve been testing them religiously, and have become quite selective. I found some that only seem to reinforce the fact that my hair is unwashed and others that magically infuse new life into my strands for days. I wanted to share my VIP picks, in hopes you can start living the dirty hair life, too. It’s a life that involves cool shower caps and more sleep in the morning!

The scent of Lulu Organics Lavender + Clary Sage Hair Powder ($30) is unbeatable. Very herbal and soothing — I actually think in the process of absorbing excess scalp oil it also manages to relax me. It also gives my hair a nice texture. Rub a dab of this between your fingers and then massage into your scalp and brush hair. Easy and done!

This brand is new to my radar, but they seem to do it all, including hair. Acure Organics Argan Stem Cell + CoQ10 Dry Shampoo ($12.99) is another powder formula that, in addition to Argan and CoQ10, uses corn starch, white clay and essential oils of lavender and chamomile to cleanse hair. It has a very fine, almost silky, texture. I like this one on clean, “first day” hair sometimes as I think it seems to work invisibly. There is no trace of this in your hair, but it does a great job of absorbing oil.

I’ve reviewed Lush No Drought ($12.95) before, and it’s still a favorite. I have a thing for powder dry shampoos, obviously. I love how citrusy this one is, with lime and grapefruit.

If I’m going aerosol, it’s Batiste ($8.99) all the way. I really like the Blush version, but this Brit can is adorable, no? This gives me serious volume and is super convenient on the go. I stock up on this when it’s on sale at Ulta! It’s practically the only aerosol dry shampoo I will use. No weird texture issues to be had with this one, which makes it a standout.

New! Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eye Collection

Color us excited! Bobbi Brown is releasing GET THIS…pencil versions of her famously fabulous Long Wear Gel Eyeliner. RIGHT??? There was a time when those were the only eyeliners I wore. I must have burned through an entire pot of the Violet in less than 6 months. It was 2006 and I was going through a major purple phase.

Long-Wear Eye Pencil ($24) – Stays put for 12 hours! Now in Jet, Mahogany, Black Navy, Black Plum, Hunter and Smoke.

Long-Wear Cream Shadow ($24) – Four new shades available: Cool Lilac, Velvet Plum, Black Violet, Smoky Topaz and Berry Noir.

Intensifying Long-Wear Mascara ($24) – Bobbi’s longest-lasting mascara, delivering lush, thick lashes that can stand up to the elements for up to 16 hours.

After hearing about the new Long-Wear Cream Shadow shades, now seems as good as time as any to revive my purple obsession! What do you think?

Eucerin Professional Repair + Giveaway

The perfect time to test a new body lotion is most definitely when temperatures fluctuate in a matter of days by 40 degrees. Or the “pneumonia front” we experienced in Chicago a few weeks ago where the temp dropped by 25 degrees in just minutes. Definitely situations that have my skin begging for stability.

Enter Eucerin Professional Repair, a new innovation in lotion for extremely dry skin. Eucerin designed this to improve the condition of skin by combining your skin’s own natural moisturizers, Ceramide-3, and Gluco-Gylcerol, a  breakthrough ingredient which improves moisture reserves in the skin. Think of it as like your own personal watershed. I love it because while it intensely moisturizes it does so in the lightest way.

And, for the fun news, I have a Eucerin Professional Repair Tool Kit to give away! The tool kit has everything you need to get ready for spring.

  • Eucerin Professional Repair
  • Eucerin water bottle
  • $50 Sunglass Hut Gift Card

To enter, share a skin tip in the comments. How do you keep your skin healthy and hydrated? Feet, hands, etc? Let us know! And, if you’re up for it, share your tip on on Eucerin’s Facebook page. They may even  feature you in their “Tip Tuesday.”  We’ll pick a winner Monday, April 2.*

*Giveaway open to U.S. residents only.

Disclosure: We received a sample of Eucerin Professional Repair as well as the Professional Repair Tool Kit.

Just Another Mani Monday: BECCA Cala Blanca

Testing nude-toned nail polish is always so interesting. The thing with shades of skin polish is that you have to find one that is right for your skin tone or it can go all sorts of wrong. It’s a genuinely great feeling when you find one that is just right. For me, BECCA Cala Blanca, from the Balearic Love collection, is just right. Once I get my (faux) tan on, this will be my shade. It’s pretty close to perfection now, and I can’t wait to wear this on my toes, too! I like the monochromatic look on my toes because I think it makes my legs look longer. Short girls will take any edge we can get:)

Also, in addition to the lovely Cala Blanca, check out the greenery in the background. That’s the tree in my front yard, that normally blooms mid-April. Crazy, right? I love seeing all of the fresh growth, and will even suck up the early allergies I’m getting as a result. Hope everyone is having a good start to the week!

Bobbi Brown Brightening Finishing Powder Adds the Magic Touch

Let’s start this review out by saying I live for Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks. They are among my favorite beauty products, and I have such fond memories affixed to each one and the time in my life when I used each one. So I didn’t know what to anticipate when I first tried Bobbi’s Brightening Finishing Powder, from the Brightening Nudes collection. And after using it, it’s still hard to describe the effect on skin. And I think it stems from some pre-conceived Shimmer Brick notions. Well, I’m dropping them, so you should too.

This is an entirely different product. I wouldn’t call it a highlighter. Or a cheek product. It truly is a finishing powder (which, um…duh…is in the product name) in that you can use it to complete your look. Brush it all over, anywhere you want. It adds something, albeit very hard to describe. I see somewhat of an airbrush finish, a polish, a softening. I like to sweep it over my eyelids, and all over. There’s some glitter in there, but it’s near impossible to see it on the skin unless you get reallyREALLy close. And even then, it feels like its doing something right.

It’s hard to put into words that “magic touch.” But that’s what I feel like it does. And I like the fancy velvet pouch it comes in. Super chic, Bobbi!

Kiehl's + Earth Day AND Mark Ruffalo

What do Mark Ruffalo, deep pore cleansing and recycling have in common? Kiehl’s, of course. For their 2012 Earth Day campaign, Kiehl’s is teaming with Recycle Across America and releasing four totally awesome Limited Edition Rare Earth Cleansing Masques with label art inspired and created by four celebs. That’s where Mark Ruffalo comes in. He joins Spike Lee, Florence Welch and Rosario Dawson for the 2012 campaign, and 100% of net proceeds from these limited edition Rare Earth Cleansing Masques will benefit Recycle Across America.

This masque is one of our favs at Product Girl. In the warmer months, we use it a few times a week. It’s dude-friendly, too. One I can actually get the man in my house to use —-I care about his pores as well. The Amazonian White Clay helps to purify the skin and other ingredients, including oat kernel flour, help zap up all that surface oil on skin. I’m all for masque-ing for charity, ESPECIALLY when Mark Ruffalo is involved. I will promptly be taking myself to Kiehl’s in April to snag Mark Ruffalo’s design. I love them ALL. I’m tempted to get Florence’s as well. Don’t you love them?

And, a fun fact to leave you with:  Since 2009, Kiehl’s has collected more than 500,000 empty Kiehl’s bottles from shoppers through its “Recycle & Be Rewarded” program.  While I’m a regular recycler (especially because of the rewards), I may not be able to part with these. At least not Mark’s…

Available in April for $23.

March TRIA Laser Hair Removal Update

Last month, about four weeks to the date, I said spring felt closer than ever. I was so right! How exciting is this, guys? I’m concerned about what consistent 80-degree temps in Chicago in March mean for the planet, but I totally dig it. How can I not? Anyone else with me?  When I first started the TRIA process last November, spring was truly a pipe dream. I didn’t know what to expect but I was committed to giving it my best effort. Which is easy to do with the TRIA, thankfully.

March threw some challenges. I’ve been so rigid about every other Saturday, even setting up calendar reminders to keep me on track, but I had some travel that fell over the weekends. My solution? Pack up the TRIA and bring it with me! It’s very portable. I opted not to bring the charger (mainly because I forgot) and luckily the battery lasted. That is something I’ve had challenges with at home (because I often forget to juice up the device!), so I was happy that it didn’t quit on me mid-treatment.

The theme of March really is change. Not only did I travel with the TRIA but I also began using it weekly on the underarm. I decided to do that because I’m impatient. If I’m being honest!  It’s not that I’m not seeing results, it’s just not like the flip of a switch. I no longer have a need to shave every day under the arm – which is a change from the last 4-6 weeks – but my thinking is I can speed it up. I still see hair, but I notice it’s sparser. I think it’s because I’m so excited that I’m watching it more closely now. I see the finish line ahead, but know that I still have to get there.

Did anyone take advantage of the TRIA promotion we offered earlier this month? Would love to hear if any of you are using this or have any questions! Let us know. And, if you’re just joining us now, here’s a link to our previous TRIA updates.

"Bonne Mine" Glow for Spring with Laura Mercier Sheer Crème Colour

Bonne Mine, a.k.a. Healthy Glow. Remember when Laura Mercier released the Bonne Mine Palette filled with glow-inducing Sheer Crème Colours? That was a good one, and lucky for “bonne mine-seekers” like ourselves, it is still available as are three new shades. Part of the Portfolio Animation collection (the one with the makeup version of a trapper keeper!), three new, yet limited edition, Sheer Crème Colour compacts are available:

  • Pearl Glow Veil
  • Pink Cheek Veil
  • Bronze Veil

    L-R: Pearl, Pink, Bronze

All are delightfully sheer, with a smooth powder-like finish. And *bonus* — they are finger friendly. In fact, that’s my preferred method of application. I love the rosy gold Pearl Glow Veil. I actually use it as a blush. The swatches show it pretty heavy, but lightly blended onto the cheek gives a really pretty effect that is so subtle…so “bonne mine.”

These are available now at counters and Laura Mercier online!
