Beauty VIP of the Week: Weleda Gentle Cleansing Milk

I crave simplicity, yet, recognize that I’m way too OCD to actually achieve that on most days. For example, take my nightly cleansing routine. I absolutely MUST get every trace of makeup off. I use an eye makeup remover, a cleansing oil or lotion, followed by my Clarisonic + face wash and a post facial mist or hydrating water pre-serum/moisturizer/etc. It’s more time intensive than perhaps it needs to be, but I dig my rituals. Except when I want to be simple. Which is where Weleda’s Gentle Cleansing Milk enters the picture and gives me exactly what I need.

Cleansing Milks have always been one of those “good in theory” products for me, but always seemed to fall short in practice. But not the Weleda. Which is why it is this week’s Beauty VIP. Aside from eye makeup, which I insist on always being “step one,” this breaks down all of the makeup on my face AND doesn’t need a follow-up cleanse. Just a one-stop shop that happens to smell like a fancy spa and leave my skin soft and supple. I love that this is an effective natural option, with natural essential oils and organic jojoba seed oil to help break down the makeup and moisturize the skin.

I snagged this at Target (Target coupon code) last month during a clearance sale, but you can find it at Whole Foods and other e-tailers like for about $19. L-O-V-E this new bathroom counter staple!

Ten or Less: Aveeno Positively Nourishing Body Moisturizer

One of the most commonly asked questions I get from friends, family and coworkers is, “what’s a good body moisturizer?” Maybe it’s because winter is coming (or here…given it felt like it was in the TEENS when I woke up this a.m.), but lotion seems to be on everyone’s mind. Regardless, I have the answer: AVEENO Positively Nourishing Body Moisturizer.

I first tried this body lotion back in February when I was in Los Angeles for the Independent Spirit Awards with 25 other bloggers and the AVEENO team, during a moment that remains probably the most relaxing 30 minutes I’ve had in 2011. The team arranged for massages using the Positively Nourishing Body Moisturizer, and we had our choice of Aveeno Postively Nourishing in Refreshing, featuring blueberry and goji berry; Soothing, which has vanilla and chamomile; or Invigorating, with grapefruit and rosemary. I opted for the Invigorating, and I felt so refreshed afterwards. Ever since, I’ve really come to love these lotions. Good memory association, you know?

I like that they each have a subtle smell that doesn’t compete with the perfume I wear and the forumla does a good job locking in moisture, thanks to the addition of AVEENO’s signature nourishing oatmeal. Plus, at $8.49 a bottle, they are a steal! For how much lotion is needed to survive a winter, a good priced option is key.

MAC Viva Glam 2012 Campaign Image Revealed

This just in: MAC revealed the Viva Glam 2012 campaign image featuring Ricky Martin and Nicki Minaj on their Facebook page. What do you think? The scoop on the lipstick is still TBD…but we’re excited to find out. Is it just us, or does Ricky Martin not age? I’m totally envious. Men have it so good.

Ricky and Nicki’s Viva Glam products will be on MAC counters come February, and every cent will go towards the MAC Aids Fund.

Let's Do This: TRIA Laser Hair Removal System, Part One

I’m all about the DIY beauty and skincare treatments at home. I recreate a serene spa-like atmosphere in my bathtub almost every night, and religiously give myself manicures every Sunday. So naturally, I’m very excited to try laser hair removal at home as well. This “medi-spa” twist to my at-home beauty routine is courtesy of TRIA, the only FDA-cleared laser hair removal system that delivers permanent results at home.

The TRIA Hair Removal Laser is designed to work on medium to dark body hair and fair to medium skin tones. This describes me to a T, so I’m hoping for good results! I totally get a 5 o’clock shadow in my underarm area and it’s a serious annoyance, especially in the summer. So that is where I will be starting with the TRIA. I can’t even imagine a morning (and sometimes an evening) without shaving my underarms, so I am thrilled at the thought. Important to note, the TRIA is only intended for use below the neck — so absolutely no zapping away at any rogue facial hairs.

In order to see results, the TRIA must be used every other week for six months. I am going to be your guinea pig with this process, and chronicle my experience with the TRIA from now until next April. To keep myself on track with the bi-weekly treatments, I’ve already set up calendar reminders. Wish me luck…and stay tuned!

A Few of Our Favorite Things….Holiday Gift Guide

There are a few camps of people. For some, the holiday season begins after Thanksgiving. For another subset, it begins before….and that’s quite the subjective date. I’m in the latter camp, and am THISCLOSE to actually putting up my tree. But, I’ll wait until after Thanksgiving. (Maybe.)  I have, however, already picked up some Christmas gifts for family and friends. I love Christmas shopping, or shopping in general, so this time of year is just “want” overload. I try to channel that into good energy for others though. So in the spirit of the season, we are going to be sharing a few of our favorite things each week. May it serve as inspiration for your holiday shopping list or personal wish list!

This week’s focus is definitely a hodge podge or beauty goodies, home and personal accessories that make great gifts for yourself or others!

  • Slatkin and Co. Apple Crumble Candle – This is the best-smelling candle EVER. It smells true to form — baked granny smith and mcintosh apples topped with vanilla crumble, cinnamon and nutmeg. I burn this constantly, and it makes me feel more comfortable in my own home, like someone is baking goodies while I get to relax on the couch with a cozy blanket. Do yourself a favor and stock up on this for yourself and everyone you know. Available at Bath & Body Works, $19.50 (though ALWAYS on sale!).
  • AHAVA ‘Salt Celebration’ Mineral Bath Salt Wands – I am a bath ‘fene; there’s nothing more relaxing and indulgent on a chilly evening. And AHAVA Bath Salts are among my tub staples. These wands are just TOO adorable, and limited edition. They’d make for a perfect stocking stuffer. Available at Nordstrom for $10.00
  • Glitter iPhone Case I cannot resist the charm of this uber sparkly metallic iPhone case. I think it’s perfect. There’s a silver option, too. Hmm….I could justify both.  Available at J Crew for $25.
  • MAC Dazzlesphere Ornament Mini Nail Kit – It’s tradition in my family to get/give an ornament every year — my tree is literally filled with 29 years of memories. I love that this is not just five covetable polishes, but also an ornament. Check it out at Nordstrom for $25.50.
  • NARS ‘Mie Kabuki’ Mini Soft Touch Eyeshadow Pencil Coffret – Mini shadow pencils! I am really digging the variety of color. I will defnitely be checking this out on my next trip to the NARS counter. I think my niece would love this — she’s adventurous with color. A girl after my own heart! Available at Nordstrom for $55.

That wraps up our first edition! Let us know what you think. And, I’m also curious, which camp do you fall in? Please tell me SOME of you are already listening to holiday music, too. It really is the most wonderful time of the year, right?

Make Up For Ever Opens its First L.A. Boutique

LA-area ladies, did you know? Make Up For Ever opened its first boutique this past weekend! Judging by the photo, it looks pretty amazing. Huge too — at 1,300 square feet (bigger than my condo, in fact) the space is reminiscent of a backstage, industrial environment complete with make up stations and video projections on the walls.

And…perhaps the coolest element in this boutique is the Make Up Lession Recording Studio. Literally, a glass enclosed makeup station where you can have your own personalized makeup session with a pro artist recorded. That way, all of the step by steps and tips you learn can be saved for you to recreate on your own. But not on a boring DVD…rather a lipstick-shaped USB. Cool right?  So if you area in the area, you need to GO and tell us about it.  It’s located at 132 South Robertson Boulevard in LA. What are you waiting for?!

Featured Mani: Essie Bobbing for Baubles

Hey all, Happy Tuesday! Over the weekend, I  picked up new Essie winter colors from the Cocktail Bling Collection. Another Essie collection where I love every single shade. Amaze.  Today I’m wearing my top pick from the collection, Bobbing for Baubles. It’s a stormy sapphire blue that I just adore. Sometimes deeper shades tend to all look a similar shade of black when you build them up to two coats, but not this one. What you see in the bottle is exactly what you get!

Anyone else try this shade yet? I highly recommend!

A Perfect Pair: Bobbi Brown Skin Mineral Foundation and Face Brush

It’s been a very long time since I’ve used a mineral foundation. I’ve always found them to be a little cakey and not right for my skin. So no one was more surprised than me to come across a mineral foundation that made me neglect my tinted moisturizers and liquid foundations. But Bobbi Brown’s Skin Mineral Foundation is the real deal. A little touch of concealer (or a lot, depending on how much sleep I’m getting) and a blend of powder all over and I’m good. Actually, I’m better than good — my skin looks so natural. I have many a Kabuki brushes that I love, but I picked up Bobbi’s Face Brush and I think it makes application even better. It’s incredibly soft, making it an absolute treat to powder my face every morning. I’ve been using the Light shade, but I think it runs dark and can see myself converting to Extra Light for “pale season.”

I never thought I’d experience a hydrating and good-for-my skin mineral foundation, so kudos to Bobbi! We give this an A++.
