Sorry, ladies… this gal has been off her beauty blogging game for awhile but she’s making a comeback. It starts with a Mani Monday, on Tuesday! Better late than never, right?
This week’s mani was done with Cult Nails In a Trance. This is not a shade I would typically wear but after reading Michelle’s post on military greens, I realized I had this shade already and that I should give it a shot. I’m very glad I did because I am loving this color.
I got to meet the founder of Cult Nails, Maria, at Cosmoprof last month. She’s a great gal and what I love most is that she started as a blogger. Read her blog and you’ll be envious of her gorgeous nails as I am. It’s interesting to hear about creating a collection from her perspective, it is not something we often hear.
As for In a Trance, the shade’s golden tones sparkle in the sunlight but in indoor lighting, you really see how on trend this shade really is. When I look at it, I’m instantly reminded of MAC’s Sumptuous Olive eyeshadow, it is as if this is the shade’s nail polish counterpart. I love this against my skin tone, it is not too dark and the green glistens against the gold shimmer. I also really liked the formula, it was thin enough so that I could control the application easily and leveled out nicely. For a gal who often applies her polish way too thick, this is worked well for me. I have swatches of a few other shades to show you and I’ll be posting those soon.
So what’s on your nails this week? Ignore my cuticles, it’s a daily battle. Let me know in the comments!
Like a flip of a switch, the seasons have changed. The lows are getting lower and the forecasts are downright chilly. This means that every part of your body is going to soon demand more moisture. For me, I notice it right away in my lips. One of my favorite products, for day or night, is Jouer’s Lip Enhancer. It’s like a deep conditioner for the lips, with vitamin E, shea butter and jojoba oil. So luxe — it’s not your ordinary Chapstick. This treatment actually works to increase blood flow to your lips, and the formula is long lasting and truly hydrating. And, as an added bonus, it has a teeny tiny hint of pink color.
Imagine my delight when I saw a mini Jouer Lip Enhancer in my September Birchbox! It’s such a cute tiny thing. I love having the mini around now, so I can keep one on my nightstand. It’s a tried and true VIP, and my unofficial survey of coworkers who received this in their Birchbox have affirmed my stance. Let us know if you’ve tried this as well, and what you think, too!
Check it out on JouerCosmetics.com or Birchbox.
A few weeks ago I popped into the Kiehl’s boutique on Armitage in Chicago to pick up a tub of the Kiehl’s Ultra Oil Free Gel Cream. It was an ordinary day of errand running, but it became THAT much more exciting when the sales associate showed me a tube of the not-yet-available for purchase Midnight Recovery Eye cream. Such a tease, that was, because it was love at first application. The good news is that it’s available now on Kiehl’s.com.
Nothing chaps me more than a moisturizing eye cream that doesn’t do anything but moisturize. I need it to work, as in werk. Midnight Recovery Eye activated all of the right senses. The smell is phenomenal, thanks to the addition of lavender essential oils. The texture is creamy and delicious, and feels great to the touch—perfect for the delicate under-eye area. Plus, the ingredients mean this eye cream is going to werk when you are resting. Butcher’s Broom does the heavy lifting by improving circulation and reducing puffiness. It also contains the healing lipid Squalane which is very replenishing to the skin and Evening Primrose Oil which repairs skin and boosts radiance. In other words, even if you don’t get enough sleep, you’ll look like you did!
Midnight Recovery Eye is $36, and available on Kiehl’s.com. My gal in Chicago said mass distribution is October, so it may be a few weeks before you see it in stores.
I can’t recall the last time a simple matte brown eyeshadow grabbed my attention in a major way. But that’s exactly what has happened with MAC Moleskin Eye Shadow from the MAC Me Over collection. It’s a matte nude brown that is impossibly useful. The color pigment is stellar and it blends beautifully. Really, it’s the perfect multi-tasker. I like it in the crease, on the lid with a swipe of eyeliner and to blend out a smokey eye. It’s just.so.easy.
The PSA here is not to overlook the simple eyeshadows in life. They might just turn out to be the most used item in your makeup bag! MAC Moleskin is still on counters, for $15. It’s limited edition, so get on it while you still can.
This week’s mani was done with Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Poco a Poco, a shade I am so obsessed with lately that I’ve been wearing it for 2 weeks now despite the issues I have run into. I’m not the kind of gal that usually goes crazy for a pink nail polish, you may remember that I’m more of a red gal, but this shade speaks to me.
Poco a Poco means “little by little” in Spanish and little by little, this shade changes to reveal another facet of itself. In the sun, this shade is a soft, neutral pink with gold sparkling through. In the shade, it is a murky muted mauve that I find chic and elegant with my skin tone. This shade is my favorite from RBL’s newest Firebird collection.
Application wise, this was the first time I had a hard time with a RBL shade. When I try to do thin coats, it becomes thick and hard to work with. To get around that I pick up more polish and try to even it out but then it doesn’t seem to level out completely. I’ve found Poco a Poco works best for me when I apply thicker coats of it, it is also less streaky that way. While two thick coats works for me, a third is tempting to cancel out any streaking.
With that said, these are issues I will gladly put up with to wear this gorgeous shade. Perhaps it was just my bottle, at least I hope so. This is a shade I’m very tempted to order back ups of, I don’t recall seeing a shade like this in any other line. Do you?
What’s on your nails this week? Let me know in the comments.

It’s Fashion Week, which means we’ll see the fashions and beauty trends to come for Spring 2012. NARS created the look for the Joy Cioci runway show, which is all about a “free-spirited woman in pursuit of love.” The NARS look, shown in the face chart, is about Radiant Skin, created with the new Tinted Moisturizers coming out in the spring, as well as a precisely lined, neon-red lip.

While I love me a good book store (RIP Borders), I’m pretty ecstatic that today is the day Topshop opens its second U.S. location in Chicago, in the home of the former Borders store at 830 N. Michigan Ave. This was all the buzz around the office this morning! The location couldn’t be better, and the interior has been renovated to create major impact. The escalators have been moved to the back of the store, and a balcony will cover the second floor (Topman) and house a DJ booth. As someone who spent a lot of time in that Borders, it’s going to be crazy different.
In honor of the store’s launch, Topshop created an exclusive nail polish, called Windy City. This stormy blue couldn’t be more perfect for Chicago, right? It certainly reflects the mood around the city come January!
Happy Topshopping to all. Let us know if you’re in Chicago, and if you’re stopping by the store! Would love to hear what you think!
While I am wishing I was in New York to stop by all the fabulous events being held there tonight, I’ll be stepping out in Seattle tonight. My first stop is Nordstrom for a little tweet-up then afterwards I am heading to University Village for a little more shopping for their FNO event today from 3pm to 9pm.
As part of the event, the first 200 lucky shoppers who check in at the FNO station located between Ben Bridge and Sole Food will receive a free deluxe U Village swag bag with goodies from many of U Village merchants.
Some of the highlights include “Shopping, Sweets and Sweeps,” an event hosted by Cole Haan where shoppers can enter to win a new pair of Cole Haan shoes every month for a year. Anthropologie will be hosting a trunk show featuring their new fall fashions and H&M will offer a $10 off any purchase of $50 or more for this special night only. Swink Style Bar is offering discounts, raffles, hair and makeup consultations and champagne.
You can find more information on the event here, including how to win a $500 U Village shopping spree by donating new or gently-used coat to Wellspring Family Services. RSVP on Twitter and Facebook!
