It’s the last Monday in August! Which means it’s practically fall. And that I’m going to the dark side (of nail colors) soon. So I chose the brightest, most fantastic pastel for this August send-off: Essie Mint Candy Apple. It had such a great summer, don’t you think? Everywhere I looked, be it in the office or on the train, this color graced the fingertips of many a women. And today, it’s practically a permanent accessory to my on-the-go coffee mug. Definitely one of those days that even loads of caffeine can’t save. Is it just me or is it already way too dark in the morning? Summer really is wrapping up!
What are you wearing on your nails on this last week of August?

I’m forever fixated on a luminous complexion. I look for products that enhance my natural glow, or just outright do all the work for me! Jouer Glisten Brightening Powder is a rock star in the luminosity department. I’ve reached for it every day this week and now I can’t imagine life without. It’s like peach fairy dust, and it works wonders on my complexion. I’m also obsessed with the square, weighty packaging. It’s elegant and looks so pretty on my bathroom counter!
As with other highlighters, I dust this along the high points of my face and watch my complexion go from dull to illuminated. It’s incredibly lightweight and becomes one with skin almost immediately. But there’s more to the Glisten Brightening Powder than meets the eye. The powder is enriched with vitamin E, chamomile, cucumber and pomegranate extracts. The added boost of these calming ingredients makes this the perfect powder, and sets it apart from many others that currently reside in my highlighter drawer (yes, an entire drawer).
Admittedly, I got quite distracted with Essie’s Braziliant Summer Collection. But for good reason – it was amazing. I’ve been obsessively wearing Too Too Hot on my toes and I’m still enchanted by the sparkly blue Smooth Sailing. Somewhere in that obsession, Essie Resort 2011 slipped right by me. But on the bright side, I’ve found a few new favorites that are carrying me right into fall. Take my word for it, do not let this collection pass you by.
When so many brands entered the mineral makeup arena, Bobbi Brown did not and I have to wonder if it was because she was perfecting her own formula for Skin Foundation Mineral Makeup until it performed exactly as she wanted it to. Now it is here and I for one, cannot wait to try it.
Skin Foundation Mineral Makeup SPF 15 is revolutionary, consisting of an exclusive vitamin and mineral blend that is triple coated with vitamins, moisturizers and conditioners, and film formers. It is then triple milled into fine particles that create a smooth, silky finish. This weightless mineral formula is particularly special because of three unique features:
Skin looks like skin…
A perfectly balanced blend of mineral powders provides a unique translucency that allows the skin’s natural luminosity to show through. Powders in different shapes and sizes were chosen to create a weightless, aerated sensation and natural look on the skin. This formula absorbs excess oil on the surface of the skin and delivers a natural, healthy finish.
It contains moisturizers and skin conditioners…
Sodium Hyaluronate, a powerful moisture magnet, keeps skin’s moisture balanced, preventing dryness and caking, which exaggerate the appearance of fine lines. Squalane, Soy Bean Extract and Ceramides help soften and smooth skin. Vitamin B and mineral powders provide skin conditioning benefits.
This mineral formula contains a unique complex that bonds Vitamins C and E together, providing prolonged activity and a slow release of broad spectrum antioxidant protection.
For light to medium coverage, apply with a Face Brush in a circular motion that allows the powder to be buffed and seamlessly blended into the skin. For medium to full coverage, use a powder puff as it picks up a greater amount of the product and allows it to be worked into the skin. Start by pressing the product into the skin with a powder puff and then blend it in by sweeping over it with a face brush.
I told you a few weeks about how I’m participating in Johnson’s Blog for Beauty Challenge. My first post was about Johnson’s Baby Powder (did you know there’s a Magnolia scented baby powder? love it) and this week I’m all about their Baby Shampoo.
There is a cleanser that I love dearly and every single time I use it, I’m reminded of Johnson’s Baby Shampoo because it smells just like it and is just as gentle so this week I actually used it instead of my beloved cleaner without any repercussions. It didn’t leave my skin feeling dry or tight and didn’t leave my eyes burning when I got some in them. It made for a great eye makeup remover too. At one point I even added some Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant into the mix for some exfoliating love, you could add in some sugar instead if you wanted a less expensive option. I don’t know that I would use this regularly instead of a cleanser but if I’m traveling or in a pinch, this will fit the bill.
As I did with the baby powder, I tried to find some alternate uses for the baby shampoo:
It makes a good laundry detergent for my delicates on a gentle cycle and they came out great.
It makes a good brush cleaner, whether it is a makeup brush or a hair brush.
It makes a good household cleaner, I used a a quarter size dollop on my wood surfaces and the mineral oil in it made it shine like new.
If I had sensitive skin, I’m sure this would be a staple in my life. For now, I’m saving it for my brush arsenal and delicates. I’m sure there are a lot more ways to use this product that I haven’t even thought of but how many products do you know of that can do so many things for around $3? Do you use this product in any unexpected ways? Let me know in the comments.
One of the most annoying things is getting an amazing pedicure and two days later having dry and callused heels. But sadly, this is life as I live it. It helps that I live in Chicago, where sandal season is a small sliver of the year. Nonetheless, I upkeep my beat feet obsessively. After years of scrubs, creams and the ped-egg (which my podiatrist scolded me for using), I’ve finally discovered the secret to smooth heels: Priori Advanced AHA Invigorating Face and Body Scrub and a pumice stone.
Priori’s scrub is an anti-aging powerhouse, with lactic acid as the leading ingredient. It actually makes perfect sense to use this on your feet, as it deeply exfoliates skin multiple layers deep. I use it a few times each week by rubbing it into each foot and letting it sit for a moment before I take the pumice stone to my heel. It takes care of all that skin build-up and gives me the feet I wish I had. At $64, this scrub is not cheap, but I find the expense to be worth it completely and it’s the equivalent of just two pedicures. It can be used everywhere, and trust me, if it does that for just my feet, think of what it does for the entire body! It gives me that brand new girl feeling.
This week we’re taking a look inside Ning Chao’s makeup bag. Ning is the beauty director for Beautylish, one of my favorite beauty websites. I rarely watch YouTube videos but I do, I start at Beautylish. Ning is a beauty addict just like us. Prior to her role at Beautylish, she was the senior beauty editor at Marie Claire and also spent some time at In Style, Elle, Vogue and Glamour. Ning knows beauty. Laurie and I both had the pleasure of meeting Ning at a dinner party in New York when we were there in May and Ning is a sweetheart. You know how some women are naturally radiant and gorgeous? I think Ning is one of them.
Let’s take a peek at what’s insider her bag with commentary from Ning herself:
I use to love this time of year. Call me a nerd but I LOVED shopping for school supplies, I would start bugging my mother to take me shopping the minute August 1st rolled around because I wanted everything in order well before the first day of school. When I was a teenager, I started adding makeup into the equation. Back then I was working part time in drugstore making $5 an hour. If eyes.lips.face. had been around then (maybe it was and I didn’t know?) I would have been in heaven with all the budget makeup products!
eyes.lips.face. has been a great source of “dupes” for many high end brands and now they are tackling mineral makeup with something I haven’t seen in other mineral makeup brands. They offer 3 shades – light, medium and dark – but each shade has 4 different variations in the jar that you can use to create your perfect match. The variations in each shade include:
Light: Porcelain, Fair, Light, Beige
Medium: Medium Beige, Golden Honey, Tan, Bronze
Dark: Almond, Toffee, Dark, Deep
I’ve always shied away from using mineral makeup on a regular basis because I couldn’t get a good match and didn’t want to invest in multiple jars to create that ideal shade. I love that e.l.f. has thought of this and am giving this a try.
This is a great time to stock up on everything before the first day of school comes around, it will be here before you know it! Right now you can get 50% off on orders over $25 by using coupon code STUDIO during check out, theoffer ends 8/29.
What is your favorite eyes.lips.face. product? Let me know in the comments.
