Best of 2010: Favorite Eye Products

In 2010, we saw many beautiful eyeshadows and tons of color. We had a lot of fun with our eye makeup this year, but our picks for favorite products are what we see as staples day in and out. Eye makeup that we need to survive, ya know the feeling? Here’s what we deemed to be the best!

Urban Decay Naked Palette – What kind of 2010 wrap-up would this be without talking about the Naked Palette? This literally contains everything you need to create every type of eye imaginable, all within the beloved neutral range of course. Something tells me this will carry on as a favorite for many into next year, especially because it’s still one of the most sought after eyeshadow palettes! Worth every penny.

Bobbi Brown Long-Wearing Cream Shadow, Shore – Bobbi released some beautiful metallic cream shadows with her summer Beach Club collection, but it’s Shore, the barely there matte nude, that has stayed in the makeup bag since summer. It’s the perfect eye base — layered with shadow or just on its own.

NARS Smudgeproof Eye Base – NARS foray into eyeshadow primer was a successful one. We love this product, and it’s hard to put into words just how different it is than other primers. It’s got a great texture — almost a fluffy, tacky gel that seamlessly melts on the lids. Eyeshadows of the powder and cream varieties adhere to this very well. Definitely a staple eye product for us. And while I don’t think you get as much product as say UDPP, my tube is still going strong 6 months in.

MAC Greasepaint Stick, Dirty – MAC Greasepaint Sticks were a favorite for me in 2009 so I was giddy when the Art Supplies collection launched. Dirty is such a multi-dimensional shade — a blackened taupe — that creates the best smokey eye. I smudge this along the upper and lower lash line, throw on mascara and I am good to go. The staying power on these is really impressive too — they don’t budge.

MAC Superslick Liquid Liner – MAC did good in the eye department in 2010! The Superslick Liquid Liner that launched with Fabulous Felines was a game changer. The flocked tip makes it easy breezy to apply and the colors were so fun. We hope these come back next year.

Chanel Taupe Gris Eyeshadow – Of all the eyeshadow singles that I tried, this was the moneymaker. Taupe Gris is one of those “do everything” shades that gives me a very polished look no matter what I do. It’s also an interesting shade, as are most taupes. It pulls rather purple on me, but depending on what I pair it with, it can look more grey or brown. Truly worth the Chanel pricetag.

Trish McEvoy Beauty Emergency Card for Eyes – Trish always sneaks onto our best of lists, because she makes amazing makeup. Her recent Beauty Emergency Card for Eyes is a Carla staple. It contains really rich, shimmering neutrals and even has your brow filler covered. Plus, these are so tiny. I’m pretty sure the new TSA body scans wouldn’t even notice this tucked in your pocket:)

Your turn to share. Any fave eye products to add to the conversation?

Best of 2010: Our Favorite Hair Products

As a couple of ladies with super straight hair, and lots of it, what we really want is some lift. And of course, healthy locks. In 2010, it was all about the quest for big hair. And as the saying goes, it’s a journey, not a destination. The quest continues, but there were a few standouts in 2010 that I’m happy to welcome to my haircare arsenal. Here’s our picks for best of hair, 2010.

Living Proof  Full Root Lifting Spray – Ooh nelly. Promises, promises with this styling spray to bring your roots to new heights. This is an interesting product, and yes, it works very well. It’s a bit sticky when you spray and due to the blend of resins in the formula, you can feel the hair thickening immediately. But once you blow-dry or style, it smooths out and lifts your hair from the root. .

Hair Bungees – As I grow my hair out, I become more and more reliant on throwing it back in a ponytail of some sort throughout the day.  But with the wonderous Hair Bungees, I don’t get any creasing in my hair. These are really cool — you literally just bungee them in your hair and secure as tightly as you need depending on the thickness of your hair. I even did a tutorial to show you what I mean!

Garnier Triple Nutrition Nutrient Spray – This started as a summer must-have, but now it’s just a must-have. It contains olive, avocado and shea oils and infuses your hair with an insane amount of moisture…weightlessly. It’s a budget beauty steal at less than $5 too.

Living Proof Full Thickening Cream – This was the second stop in the quest for big hair, and like the Root Lifting Spray, this product works wonders also. A few dabs blended into your hair about mid-blow dry, and the end result is truly thicker hair. Both of us have a lot of hair, but the individual strands are fine, so this really pumps up the volume.

Let us know your hair faves of 2010!

Best of 2010: Our Favorite Lip Products

It was really hard to narrow down our favorite lip products of 2010, because we saw the arrival of so many amazing products. And for as much of a gloss fiend I consider myself to be, most of the lippies I tipped my hat to in 2010 are lipsticks! Here’s a closer look at what we deem to be the best of the best in lips for 2010.

Chanel Rouge Coco – It all began with those gorgeous ads of Vanessa Paradis wearing Rouge Coco in Mademoiselle. I saw these in nealry every bus station and train stop in Chicago for months. Great ads, yes. But, absolutely great lipstick to back it up! I love the color selection and the formula works great on my lips. It’s long-lasting and looks and feels luxurious. My favorite shade, and I now have many, is by far Chintz from the Chanel’s Fall Collection.

NARS Pure Matte – The return of the matte lip for fall was a trend that made me wary, but we both love NARS Pure Matte. These are a fresh and updated version to the matte lip and this formula does not give you “Sahara lips.” Carla got a lot of wear time with Volga, and I rotate often between Bangkok and Tashkent, the perfect rosy and nude, respectively, shades.

Tarte Natural Lip Stain – Tarte’s Natural Lipsurgence Lip Stain revolutionized stains for us by introducing a glossy, moisturizing one this spring. They’ve got jojoba seed oil, vitamins E and C and, like all Tarte products, none of the “bad” stuff. They have a refreshing minty effect as well due to the addition of peppermint oil. We always have one of these nearby — a must if you haven’t tried yet!

Chanel Extrait de Gloss – Before you wonder if I’ve lost that loving feeling for gloss, just know, it’s still there! Chanel’s Extrait de Gloss is easily my favorite gloss launch of the year. The colors are so pigmented, yet sheer and juicy (I’m FULL of contradictions in this one, I know!). I love the nude shades, but the bright pink Insolence has left a lasting impression on me.

YSL Rouge Pur Couture – Carla’s all about this lipstick in Rose Stiletto, a rich berry rose that livens up her lips. The formula is feather light and it glides on the lips ever so easily. This lipstick is packed with pigment for full coverage and doesn’t dry lips out while it gives long lasting wear. Even though it’s got staying power, she can’t help but constantly pull this out of her makeup bag to touch up… the tube is so chic!

Carmex Moisture Plus Tinted Lip Balm – I discovered these in the fall, but now that it’s winter, I’ve been putting these on full-time duty. They’re the Carmex we know and love, but updated and with a tint! A perfect tint of color — a neutral pink or peach option. The fact that these are only $3 blows my mind.

MUFE Rouge Artist Intense – What impressed us the most with Make Up For Ever’s Rouge Artist Intense is the pigmentation and the finishes. Not everyone likes a matte lip, or a satin, etc. — and these come in three different finishes across 50 shades. I really like the bright satin pink (#37) used just slightly on with a clear gloss over it. It’s very brightening to my face. Carla did an awesome ombre lip with some of the nude shades for the MUFE Lips to Love contest. While we didn’t win (tear!), it was fun to do!

Fresh Sugar Plum Tinted Lip Treatment – The original Fresh Lip Treatment is a legend in beauty circles, but with each new release, they keep upstaging themselves! Sugar Plum is my favorite yet because of its light berry color. It’s so flattering on my fair skin, not too dark or bright, and I love the scent and flavor. Can’t get enough of this product.

Best of 2010: Our Favorite Mascaras

We’re highlighting our top beauty picks of the year, and clearly, mascara is in a class of its own! We tried a ton, liked many but only fell madly for a small, select few. And the winners are…

Chanel Inimitable Intense – This mascara is amazing! We both have been incredibly impressed with this mascara’s abilities — lengthening, separating, volumizing…it really does it all. The brush just latches onto lashes and works its magic. Definitely one of the best mascaras to hit the beauty market in 2010.

Maybelline The Falsies – I knew this was a winner when I started getting comments on my lashes at work. This mascara has so much to offer — a great price point and an innovative brush. The formula really does pump up lashes and it gives amazing length to my fringe. And it goes without saying to make our Best of Mascara list, it must not clump, flake or give racoon eyes.

What made your best of list for mascara? Any faves to share?

Best of 2010: Lancome Teint Miracle Foundation

With a name like Teint Miracle, I was expecting big things from Lancome’s latest foundation. And I wasn’t let down. I’ve been using Lancome Teint Miracle for a few months now, and it’s easily one of my 2010 favorites. After a purported 10 years of research, Lancome claims that this foundation recreates the true natural light of perfect skin giving you that true lit-from-within flawless beauty.

There’s a definite pearl to this formula, which is visible in the bottle itself.

This truly does wonders for my complexion — and the tiniest bit goes a long way. It’s dewy but doesn’t make me appear oily and is very long-lasting. I think this foundation is best suited for non-summer months as the coverage is medium and moisturizing. It feels like nothing on the skin, but is doing great things for me in the winter months.

Teint Miracle is a 2010 winner!

New! Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm

Clinique launched a new lip product for spring, the Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm. While the name is a complicated mouthful, this product looks to be about as easy as it gets. One of our favorite 2010 launches was Tarte’s LipSurgence Natural Lip Stain, due to the moisturizing properties and ease of application. This packaging reminds us of Tarte’s, and the formula, while not technically a stain, also bears resemblence.

Clinique packed these Chubbies with mango and shea butters to ensure they’re ultra hydrating on dry winter lips. They’re available in eight colors that span the spectrum. Can’t wait to give these a try!

MAC Cosmetics Cham Pale Collection

MAC’s post-holiday collections have landed, and all we can say is: YES! We are definitely feeling Cham Pale, MAC’s “toast to the New Year!” This collection is full of shimmery, glowly neutrals that seriously speak to us. Cham Pale may channel a New Year’s Eve bash but I see these colors adding some sparkle to what I’m sure will be a very dreary January.

Here’s a look at a few of my favorite items from this collection:

Lip Gelee: Bubble Lounge; Paint Pots: Dangerous Cuvee, Chilled on Ice;  Eye Kohl: I Get No Kick

Just Another Mani Monday: China Glaze Party Hearty and Sugar Plums

Usually I’m not festive with my nails but in an attempt to get into the holiday spirit (I was having such a hard time with that this year!), I wanted to show you my nails for last and for this week, both shades from the China Glaze ‘Tis the Season To Be Naughty and Nice Holiday collection. I reached for China Glaze’s Party Hearty for my Christmas mani. I wanted my nails look like a Christmas tree and the presents underneath the tree all at the same time. With three coats of Party Hearty, that’s what I had. This glitter nail polish was quite a hit with friends and family as well as out in the stores during all my last minute shopping… and it did make me a little bit cheerier. 🙂

This week’s mani is China Glaze’s Sugar Plums. I was tempted to go with one of the reds from the collection like Phat Santa but I decided to try out Sugar Plums instead. I’m not a big metallic shade gal but this plum with micro-glitter shade won me over at first pass, I’m really loving the way it looks on my nails. The finish is a little bumpy, as glitters typically are but a top coat helps reduce that a bit. I liked the formula a lot, thin enough to not get all goopy on me when I apply additional coats and it is was well pigmented. This will be the nail color I ring in the new year with.

How about you? What has been on your nails this holiday season?

Last Minute Holiday Gifts: The Minis

I am always a last minute shopper when it comes to holiday gifts. I still have a few more gifts to buy tonight so if you’re like me, I thought I’d give you some last minute shopping ideas. I always love the mini sets we see around the holidays, they just call to me. Aren’t they cute? You can find all of these sets in stores now.

Sephora by OPI Eighteen Piece Mini Nail Colour Set – Sephora by OPI has been putting out some interesting colors each season this year and this set is just the icing on the cake of a great year of color. There are enough colors in this set to please just about anyone… you have basic shades and more daring shades all in one set. It’s my favorite mini set of the season.
