Preserve the Earth with Boscia

With Earth Day, Boscia wants you to “preserve the earth” and remember to make more natural choices. This company has developed a line of preservative and chemical free products that are worth a look.

Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel and Oil Free Hydration with SPF 15 We in the Product Girl household have been using some of Boscia’s products for a little while and so far, we like what we see. My favorites are the Purifying Cleansing Gel and Oil Free Daily Hydration with SPF 15. The cleanser feels soothing even though it deep cleans. It doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight all. All you need is a little bit to form a nice lather and off you go. As for the moisturizer, it’s not greasy or heavy which are things we look for in a moisturizer. It has a thinner consistency so it spreads easily and sinks in very quickly. This moisturizer also helped to control excess oil on our skin and has SPF 15, so we’re definitely happy about that. It would be nice to see a little more SPF but this is a good start. For oily skin gals, this is great stuff.

Boscia Blotting Linens While I just started using the skincare recently, like me, you may be more familiar with Boscia’s Blotting Linens. These little books of 100 linens helps absorb excess oil on your skin with 100% natural abaca leaf fibers. They comes in six different scents: Fresh, Green Tea, Lavender, Rose, California Orange and Peppermint. I’ve been bouncing back between Green Tea and Rose and I love how they leave a soft scent on your skin. I can still smell the rose scent on my skin after I’ve blotted.

A few interesting facts about Boscia on Earth Day…

  • Boscia features two unique ingredients in every product: organically-grown jojoba leaf and willowherb. The preservative-free products not only free your skin of chemical irritation, they also reverse the symptoms that preservatives have been known to trigger, like acne, redness, and inflammation.
  • Boscia uses “clean room” technology to insure the highest level of cleanliness and have designed a “green” facility that mandates energy-efficiency and environmentally-friendly practices throughout production. The facility is designed on a vertical structure and accordingly, the assembly line begins on the top floor of the building and moves down, using gravity to move products from one process to the next.

Next time you’re in Sephora, take a look at this line… Mother Earth will thank you for it.

Go Green with Tweezerman

Tweezerman Go Green Mini Slant Tweezers What gal doesn’t need a pair of tweezers? Tweezerman’s Go Green Mini Slant Tweezers are perfect for Earth Day. These tweezers are a smaller size to save on production, the packaging is 100% recyclable and uses soy ink for it’s printing. Also, $1.00 from every sale goes to the National Arbor Foundation. This means that with every “Go Green” tweezer purchased, a new tree is planted. That’s definitely a good reason to tweeze.

Another thing that’s good to know is that Tweezerman offers free sharpening as long as your tweezers are dull due to normal use. I have a few pairs I could send for sharpening myself. Check back with us on Monday, we’ll be giving away a few pairs of Tweezerman’s limited edition Animal Prints tweezers.

Celebrate Earth Day at Kiehl's

Kiehl's Earth Day Tote Tomorrow is Earth Day and what better way to celebrate it than by recycling? Kiehl’s will be giving away a reusable canvas tote bag to the first 50 patrons to return empty Kiehl’s bottles to one of their free-standing stores for recycling. Recycle and get rewarded for it. Not bad, right?

Looking for something to check out while you’re there? Kiehl’s introduced their new Superbly Restorative collection this month. It’s a collection of body products that help restore and maintain hydration, elasticity, and smoothness of skin and hair. It features 100% organic, fairly traded Argan Oil and recycled plastic bottles. Those are things that you can feel good about buying.

The Pink Quick Fix

I have a confession to make… I don’t always have time to wear a full face of makeup. I’m always running late so during the week so my weekday face consists of whatever I have time to put on, on my way to work at stop lights. Sometimes that means nothing at all. Luckily my co-workers don’t run and hide, we have a pretty low-key office. Today is one of those days where I’m dragging and my new “quick fix” product helps me look like I’m somewhat alert.

Benefit's Eye Bright Benefit’s Eye Bright is a great quick fix product for your eyes. It’s a big, chunky light pink pencil that you dot around your eyes to instantly perk them up. You can use it on your under eye area, inner corners or brow bone to give your eyes a more awake look. The product goes on easily without harshly tugging at the delicate skin around the eyes and it blends in nicely as well. At times, I can get away with just this on my eyes and be ready to face the day… it all depends on how much damage I’m really trying to cover up.

I’ve been using this mainly on my under eye area and inner corner of my eyes and I like how it perks me up but aside from those areas, I also really like how it looked on my brow bone. I was debating picking up Mr. Frosty as well but after I saw how this one did, I figured I could pass on it for now. This is one pink eye product that’s not a drag to use at all.

Chanel's Summer 2008 Collection

File this one under “better late than never”, I meant to talk about this collection a few weeks ago but with taxes and dilly dallying around, it got delayed. Every time Chanel comes out with a new color collection, it never fails to excite me and this one is no exception.

Chanel's Summer 2008 Collection

Chanel’s Summer 2008 collection takes you on an “elegant safari”, the colors are warm and shimmery just how summer should be. This collection features:

Glosses and lipstick are nice but since I find myself always going back to the same shades so I get all kinds of excited about eyeshadow and face products. The eyeshadow quad in this collection is just beautiful with shimmering shades of dark green, bronze, peach and pink. This quad has been on my wish list since I first saw it. The quads in Chanel’s collections have quickly become the thing I look forward to the most each season. The bronzers are nice too. As a fair gal with a small bronzing phobia, the Sable d’Or shade makes it a nice introductory bronzer for me but there are shades for those gals who are more confident with their bronze.

Get Instant Gratification

I understand that there’s a time and place for taking things slow- on a first date, cutting off 6 inches or more of hair, buying a house. But when it comes to perfect skin? I don’t wanna wait around for that. And Prescriptives gets that. In fact, they’ve named a product after me – Instant Gratification. This all-in-one micro dermabrasion-peel comes pretty freaking close (in my opinion) to replicating a professional treatment at home. Plus, it’s oil free and non-acnegenic – both good things.

Prescriptives Instant Gratification Skin Renewal Peel Slather a thick layer of the white scrub onto damp skin, rubbing it on with your finger tips. The product will warm up on your skin which feels incredibly luxurious. Relax with the mask on for about 5 minutes – your face will tingle and remain warm. Then re-wet your fingertips and massage for 30 seconds, focusing on any especially dry or uneven patches. You can use this mask once a week and follow it up with your usual skincare routine.

This skin renewal peel is ah-mazing. Seriously. I have sensitive skin, complete with a tendency toward mild rosacea flare ups whenever anything too abrasive comes near my face (or when I drink too much red wine). So I’m always on the look out for an exfoliant that won’t make my skin angry. Instant Gratification fits the bill – it’s an easy to use microdermabrasion scrub that whisks away tired skin cells, uncovering smooth, glowy skin underneath.

The only potential downside is the scent- while it is technically fragrance-free, there is still a somewhat evident medicinal smell. Doesn’t bother me, but if you’re sensitive to stuff like that, you might want to sniff at the counter before shelling out the $45.

New from NARS for Summer 2008

NARS Cosmetics has introduced their summer collection for 2008 called Exotica. It’s a palette of neutrals with a sensual edge to it. This collections includes 2 new eyeshadow duos, 1 single eyeshadow, 1 lipstick, 2 lip glosses and 2 of their matte lip pencils. I’m excited to see one of the Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, it’s Dolce Vita, the dusty rose shade that has been a best selling lipstick in the NARS line.

NARS Cosmetics Exotica Summer 2008 Collection

Here’s what in the collection as pictured:

  • Galapagos Single Eyeshadow: bitter chocolate infused with gold (top row).
  • Unconditional Love Duo Cream Eyeshadow: matte seafoam and soft shimmering copper (bottom row, left side).
  • Portobello Duo Eyeshadow: matte ecru and soft matte mushroom (bottom row, right side).
  • Mindgame Lipstick: sheer brandy.
  • Dolce Vita Velvet Matte Lip Pencil: dusty rose.
  • Roman Holiday Velvet Matte Lip Pencil: delicate pastel pink.
  • Misbehave Lip Gloss: sheer cherry red with gold shimmer (top row).
  • Supervixen Lip Gloss: sheer sparkling mauve (bottom row).

I’m sure the Dolce Vita Velvet Matte Lip Pencil will sell well, it’s already going on my list but I’m more intrigued by the Endless Love Duo Cream Eyeshadow. You can find the collection online now. What’s going on your wish list?

Refine Your Skin

Women do a lot of things in the name of beauty that might otherwise seem crazy: burning off the top layer of skin to reveal smoother, undamaged skin underneath; mixing up homemade remedies to lighten freckles, treat acne, or improve radiance; or slathering on any number of creams and lotions to moisturize. So it was with a sense of adventure and a dubious, “Well, I’ll give it a try,” attitude that I started using DHC Olive Virgin Oil on my face.

DHC is the Japanese equivalent of Avon- a line of products that are sold primarily online and from a catalog. The company’s product line is founded on the natural benefits of olive oil. According to DHC, those benefits include neutralizing free radicals, creating a moisture barrier against the elements without clogging pores, and helping your skin naturally regulate moisture levels.

DHC Olive Virgin Oil Olive Virgin Oil looks exactly like, well, olive oil. According to DHC, this formula is derived of 100% certified organic Flor de Aceite which is one of the purest forms of olive oil available. According to one of my favorite sources for the real low down on beauty products, Beautypedia, there’s no difference between what you’ll find in this bottle and what is probably in your kitchen. Using olive oil as a moisturizer is not a new concept and, while I would not turn to my bottle of Bertolli brand EVOO for anything other than sauteing garlic, I somehow feel fine about the DHC Olive Virgin Oil. Go figure.

Olive Virgin Oil is recommended for all skin types, but if you’re prone to oil skin I might think twice. After cleansing, toning and moisturizing, I pump one dollop of oil onto my finger tips and then press them over my face. My cheeks are typically the driest so I concentrate the oil there. But I also smooth a little of it over my t-zone. Since that area is frequently greasy, this seemed very counter-intuitive. But instead of zits or irritation, I’m left with soft smooth skin. It looks fresh and radiant. True, it takes a few minutes for the oil to sink into my skin but that doesn’t really bother me.

If you’re looking for something to refine your skin’s texture and infuse it with a dose of moisture that lasts all day, give - DHC’s Olive Virgin Oil a try. Or save yourself the $38 and hit up your kitchen cupboard.
