First Smell of Spring in New York

Starting March 1st, you can experience a scent that’s inspired by “the first smell of spring in New York” as Andy Warhol once said. Bond No.9′s Andy Warhol Union Square is a floral scent with top notes of lily of the valley and green stems, middle notes of blue freesia and white birchwood then base notes of mellow amber and musk.

Individually the scent retails for $195 for 100ml and $135 for 50ml but Bond No.9 is introducing their limited edition portfolio of ten bottles featuring a different print of Andy Warhol’s famous Flowers piece. This is for the “serious collector”, the ones willing to part with $1500 for ten 100ml bottles.

After discovering my new love Chinatown, this scent seems to be right up my alley. On March 1st, you can find this scent online at www.bondno9.com. Aren’t the bottles gorgeous? I think I’d be alright with just one for now.

No Almond Kisses From Me

One of the things I have the most of is lip balms… I have way, way, way too many of those. This particular one I picked up last Sunday and it was love at first sniff, that is until I tried it.

on10 Hershey's Almond Lip Balm I was sucked in by the Dr. Pepper lip balms by the cash register but since I have a strong bond with my Lipsmacker, I decided to give another scent/flavor a try. I settled on on10′s Hershey’s Almond Lip Balm with SPF 15. It will suck you in with it’s rich almond scent, it’s like biting into marzipan it’s so rich. As I went to use this, I was really disappointed with it’s consistency though. I was hoping for something thick and emollient and instead I got something thin and hardly soothing. For the person who prefers their lip balms on the thinner side, this lip balm may be a great match for you but not so much for me. I like my mine to have some heft to it, something to remind my lips are being soothed and moisturized.

Sadly, I ended up returning this lip balm last night. It’s possible that the other lip balms may be more to my liking. The Dr. Pepper one comes in a tube so maybe it has a different consistency but I think I’ll be off this brand for awhile.

My New Crush

I know Valentine’s Day has come and gone, but I’ve got a new crush. One my significant other won’t mind; in fact, I think he might like my crush too. It’s Stila’s new lip and cheek stain Cherry Crush. I’ve never had much luck with lip and cheek stains – those I’ve tried have either been too difficult to apply (I’m looking at you, Benetint, with your too-stiff, too-thin brush) or the color has been too bright. I’ve just never thought the payoff was worth the effort. But I think Stila may be on to something with Cherry Crush.

Stila Cherry Crush Lip Stain The sheer stain is packaged in the same applicator as Stila’s Lip Glazes – in a slim tube with a brush at the top and a click-turn bottom. Turn the base of the tube to force the sheer cherry colored gel out through the brush bristles. The product seeps through the bristles, allowing you to apply the stain to your lips with precision. When applying the gel to my cheeks, the application was a little streaky when I used the brush but looked much better when I dabbed it on a fingertip and blended.

The color truly is a beautiful, natural flush that lasts and lasts. According to Stila, Cherry Crush reacts with the ph levels in your skin to create the perfect shade for you. It also contains Vitamins A, C and E which moisturize and provide anti-oxidant protection. Pretty and functional? Gotta love that.

Say Hello to Fafi

This past Sunday night I went to a Fafi event at my local MAC freestanding store in Seattle. There were Fafi dolls dancing around, drinks flowing freely and hor d’oeuvres floating around a store that was packed to capacity. It was insane, I have never seen that many people at MAC at once and I don’t know that I ever want to again. smiley I’m a little claustrophobic…

By now you’ve probably seen the product images all over the place. This collection isn’t as wearable as the N collection but there’s still some good wearable options in it and some really, really fun colors to play with. I have a thing for Paint Pots so naturally I want all of them. I want the Fafi Eyes 2 quad and the nail colors too. I did have to have the Fun ‘N’ Sexy lipstick though, that color is hot.

An Apple a Day…

I woke up this morning to 11 degree weather in NYC, a big change from our usual 40 degree lows. While my face battled with the blistering wind, my hands were happy because I have been pampering them with Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve. The combination of manual dishwashing and cold weather has ravaged my hands, leaving them dry and cracked. I visited a dermatologist who prescribed me a special cream which rid me of the cracks slowly but surely. Unfortunately, when I stopped the expensive prescription cream the same problem came back.

Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve On a whim, I decided to try Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve and was able to keep the doctor at bay! Normal hand creams caused further irritation from all the chemicals and fragrance. This thick, rich cream did not irritate me whatsoever. The scent is a little minty and medicinal but it is very mild. Key ingredients like glyrerin, shea butter, sesame and avocado oil really penetrate the skin to heal from within rather than having the appearance of soft skin. Compared to other heavy hand “salves” this formula is very lightweight and not at all greasy. It is definitely going to become a staple in my Winter Survival Kit.

Lips Like Velvet

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil Who knew matte would make a comeback and that I would embrace it so much? My new love is the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. I initially bought it for the great nude color that is Belle De Jour, but kept it for its ease of use. Not only does it look very sheik coming out of the purse, but it goes on very sheik as well. The combination of a pencil that glides on as easy as a lipstick in jumbo-sized crayon tube is great. It goes on extremely smooth and creamy and provides a great matte finish that does not dry out the lips. Its staying power is even better. It lasted a good 3-4 hrs before a re-application was necessary. The Belle de Jour color is a NARS classic light-beige color that was re-invented for this lip pencil and I think is even better than the Lipstick. It is also available in about 14 other colors that are equally as brilliant.

Naturally Finished

MAC’s N Collection/Colour is one of my faves of late. I am in love with the lipsticks the most. I am always looking for a great nude to wear with a smoky eye and N1 and N2 totally fit the bill. Another part of the fantastic N Collection/Face that came out was the Mineralize Skin Finish Natural powders.

MAC Cosmetics Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Not to be confused with the original Mineralize Skin Finishes which come in those wonderful swirly color combinations and provide a high-frost metallic finish. No these babies are meant to match the skin-tone and provide a “dimensional yet natural matte finish.” I went back and forth for a while trying to decide whether to buy this or not. I was not sure what its purpose was. I definitely didn’t need another step to my makeup routine in the morning. But I was sold when I found out it makes your skin glowy w/out being tacky and glittery. Not that MAC makes anything tacky, but you get my drift.

I start out with one of the mineral-based makeup’s (Bare Essentials/Youngblood) and apply this on top with a big, fat brush. It gives you a very pretty, glowy look to the skin that is perfect for daytime. The big dome-shaped container is perfect in size and comfort and makes using the product a breeze. Definitely a must-have addition for any makeup collection.

Tag! I'm It

Henna at Canadian Beauty tagged me so now it’s my turn to participate in this meme.

1.What is the story behind the name of your blog?
I wish I had some funny story to share about this but the name Product Girl just came out due to a lack of creativity! I’m still not crazy about the name and I’ve thought about changing it quite a bit. I once thought I’d hold a contest to help rename the site but I didn’t follow through with it. The name will definitely be changed but still unsure as to when. I’d love to hear what everyone thinks about this though!

2. Why did I start blogging?
I started blogging about 10 years ago and it wasn’t even beauty related. In 2005, I realized I would have more fun if I blogged about products I bought and liked using. I didn’t want to include them on my main blog so I created a separate blog just for this idea and that is how Product Girl was born. It has always been about sharing my finds with others and learning about new products. I also really liked the connection to others that blogging gave me and hoped the same would be true for the beauty blog. I had no idea so many beauty product addicts were out there when I started!

3. What is your best and worst blogging experience?
The best experience of my life so far has been turning my hobby of personal blogging into a full time job. In September 2005, I went to work for Six Apart (the company behind TypePad). Even though I left the company at the end of June last year, I had an amazing experience. It’s not very often that someone has a chance to turn a hobby into a paying job. Even writing this blog, there have been some great experiences. We’ve been in the NY Times and in Women’s Wear Daily but I’ll never forget listening to my podcast voicemail and hearing a message from Heather Park from MAC. It was like validation for all my work over the years. Fortunately, I don’t really have any negative experiences with regard to Product Girl and let’s hope it stays that way.

4. What do I think will happen to the blog in 2008?
I really hope that this is the year that this blog really grows and gets better than ever, I feel like it hasn’t really grown or gone anywhere lately so that needs to change. I have some great things planned like new features we’ll run on a regular basis, video podcasts, my friend Lea (who’s absolutely amazing) will be writing soon, a new look and I’ll finally give away some loot to our readers. I think this year will be a great year for Product Girl, things are already looking up since January.

Now it’s my turn to tag a few more bloggers… I’m tagging Shannon at A Girl’s Gotta Spa and Makeup Minute, Erika at Makeup Bag and Lianne The Makeup Girl. You’re it!
